Soooooo, looks like he'd be best used along the DL....

This is actually a great hire.

But now I've got to figure out how to address this with my friends who have heard my ripping the dude as a head coach for the past several years, and also with my Ohio State friends, with whom I shared many laughs over our common enemy.

Lane Kiffin is literally the only coach I've ever ripped on harder than Brady Hoke. I hate Hoke, he's a terrible HC. And fat. And arrogant. And a "Michigan Man."

But... he's only a position coach. So in a way, Kelly being his boss is the ultimate win.

At one point he had Damien Harris and George Campbell going to UM. If he can do that at Michigan, he can do it at ND

Why wouldn't we switch Elliott to secondary, Elston to LB's and have Hoke coach the defensive line. You know... where the majority of his coordinator experience lies?

Makes sense, Hoke played LB and has coached LB too so you could potentially give him that job. Definitely move Elliot and/or Booker to the secondary though.

Could be a very effective negative recruiter for us in the midwest. I don't know how willing he would be to talk trash about Michigan, but Id imagine he'd know enough.

Not gonna lie, I'd totally take Brady Hoke on this staff as a position coach. High effort recruiter, just not great at evaluating talent.

This. Hoke may have flopped as a HC at Michigan, and he is very likely too high school head coach minded to be the HC of a big time D1 school, BUT kids love the guy and he is good at developing a sense of camaraderie and toughness in his players.

If true, I'm all for Hoke's hire as a position coach.

Take this from the guy who is from the place where Hoke spent about half of his coaching career (Yorktown High School and Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana).

I have never found him to be arrogant at all. He was nothing but humble and down to earth when I had dealings with him. Granted this was before he was HC at Michigan.

The real question: will jelly make him wear a headset?

Think about that one for a second.

My guess is he's lost a step over the years.

This. However, it's a huge difference when comparing him as Head Coach vs Position Coach/Recruiter. The latter is his wheel house.

No doubt. Limit his responsibility, allow him a coaching position that doesn't require a headset, let Kelly and co. do the film evaluations, then sick him on the Midwest recruits, with 4 years' worth of ammunition against scUM.

But... he's only a position coach. So in a way, Kelly being his boss is the ultimate win.

I seriously want to know if the "Chicken" thing was mentioned at all in the process of getting him on board.

Can't wait for one the ND beat guys to ask Hoke about it.

Yes, same feeling here. Hoke is a complete clown and Kiffin is the only coach I find more ridiculous. But I do love the idea of Hoke as a position coach. His rah-rah attitude and ability to connect with players/recruits are great assets.

Isn't he receiving buyout money from UM? So won't that amount decrease based on his pay at ND? Soooooo is Hoke working for free?

he was a very good positional coach at Michigan in the 90's. Hell of a recruiter as well.

I think he'll do good as a DL coach. Let's face it, that's all he probably should be. He was in way over his head as a head coach at a major program. Still shocked as hell that he took a demotion to coach DL. I thought for sure he'd take the year off, let Michigan pay him $3 million they owed him and then take a head coaching job at a MAC school.

I knew Hoke was never a true "Michigan man." I don't know how to feel about this besides he can hopefully help our recruiting efforts in the Midwest. I wonder why Notre Dame hasn't gone after Ed Orgeron from USC??

I'd like to see a F*CK MICHIGAN from him then he'll definitely be accepted!!

If it's a fully negotiated buyout then anything ND pays him increases his earnings. If UM is paying his salary per the contract then whatever ND pays him decreases UM's responsibility (and therefore doesn't enrich Hoke any further) BUT Hoke would then have a duty to mitigate his damages and couldn't accept some ridiculously low number.
