Just now looking at this thread...why are you all still talking about Jughed? Personally, despite him being perma-banned, I find little to no reason to talk about him in a bad light. And race of a poster most definitely does not matter.

Although I think discussing JJ's race/ethnicity is unnecessary and I have no info one way or the other, its hilarious to me that people think he is black when he is a die hard Phish Head, has a Deadhead for an avi and randomly posts 1970-1980s era punk band videos to augment his points in threads.

That screams under 40 suburban white male to me.

You've obviously never been to Portland, OR. There are a whole host of black hipster wannabes that have adopted the '60s hippie culture...

Can I ask a(n) honest straightforward question or three and get a like response for an answer?

What is with this necrotic demonization of JJ through throwing out random and unsubstantiated assumptions about him, and soliciting responses?

Second, what is the payoff in ganging together and putting down someone who can't even defend themselves?

I wonder, because I see some level of irony, in that it looks like the same sentiment was at the basis for the PC thread, in the first place!

Who is demonizing him?

Ha, sounds about right judging from my visits to Oregon, though I also heard them refer to California as "Oregon's Mexico" and I can't say that one is far off base either....

I have a goth niece who graduated from Purdue and moved out to Portland. She last less than two months out there. Too much for her.

So this discussion has come full circle for JJ being criticized for using drugs and alcohol to several of us saying we like Portland for the exact same reasons. Haha. And yes, donuts are more addictive than pain killers. Cheese is more addictive than crack. Ha..

I think there's something in the water in the Northwest, not just Oregon, but Washington (And notably Seattle) falls in the same boat. Lot of crazy happens up there, or it draws in crazy. I should know, I've got an ex-gf that moved out there. She wanted to "Help the Homos" as she put it by joining Equal Rights Washington after she got out of college. The incentive was they would pay off part of her school loans. She wanted me to follow her out there, despite the fact I had a decent paying job on the opposite end of the country, family and friends were here, I had a house, etc, not to mention things had gotten fairly rocky before she even suggested this move. She was the kind of batty left wing nut that would berate you for your beliefs if they didn't coincide with her own, despite the fact I really don't give two shits about politics.

Not just my ex, but my one of my brother's old flames moved out to Seattle too. She was in Law and pretty successful from what I'm told. Then one day she decided to get out of Law and into....Burlesque. I shit you not. I wouldn't say the girl is unattractive, but "pinup" certainly doesn't come to mind. She's brave, I'll say that much. She added me on Facebook a number of years back before the whole Burlesque thing took off...imagine my surprise when I start getting all these pictures from her performances in my Facebook feed  I haven't the heart to remove her yet...I'm having too much fun ribbing my brother when she posts an update.

Portland is an interesting city. There is a TON of good stuff: the donuts, McMenamins brewpubs, the strip clubs (more strip clubs per capita in PDX than any other city in the country), the proximity to Mt. Hood, the coast, the Columbia River Gorge, and a whole bunch of incredibly scenic spots. And there are some really interesting, fun characters there. But there is another side to Portland as well. The completely brain dead children of the hippies of the 60s who hate the government but don't know why. Oh, they're good at mouthing the same platitudes that their parents and grandparents taught them from the time that they were old enough to sit on their knees and listen, but they don't have any idea WHY they should distrust or fight against "the norm".

Two things that stuck out for me, when I lived there, that I think typify the "underbelly" of PDX:
During the Occupy Portland rally, the local news started doing a 5 minute segment each night during the 6 o'clock news, where they interviewed one of the Occupy protestors on TV, allowing them to basically give their verbal resume, in hopes that someone watching would see it and offer them employment. One woman railed on and on about how crushed she was by student loan debt, but still couldn't find a job that wasn't basically a waitress job. So they asked her about her degree.............. A Bachelor of Arts, from the University of California at Berkeley, in Lesbian Studies. Lesbian Studies!!! And it was Wall Street's fault that she couldn't find a job that allowed her to live like she wanted and pay back her student loans like she was obligated to. The second incident was during a live news broadcast from an anti-Iraqi Freedom demonstration in downtown Portland. One of the rocket scientists that they interviewed railed on about how they sent all of the poor kids over there to fight for rich white old guys, while none of the politicians' kids (he specifically mentioned Jenna and Barbara Bush) had to go over there. A nice slogan from the Vietnam Era, when there was a draft and many politicians' kids got special deferments. But hardly applicable to Iraqi Freedom, where we fielded an all-volunteer force.

You told this story before, and it's still anecdotal.

Seattle is one of the fastest growing cities in the country. Just saw on the front page of the Seattle Times that the average home price has climbed from about $425,000 to $645,000... in just the past four years...

How is it the city has grown that fast? Must be a lot of your weird friends helping out my economy.

Oh, wait, this city has more college degrees per capita than any city in the nation (for its size) ? It has some of the most successful companies in the world based here (Microsoft, Amazon, Starbucks, Boeing, Nordstrom, Costco, etc)

Your lack of understanding of Seattle is pretty sad. You can take your anecdotal evidence, compare it to actual metrics, and then come back to me.

Your lack of knowledge is even more shocking. We took your Boeing and we'd take your coffee too if it wasn't for the fact that Double D's is twice as delicious.

I said "based" here. Was it not originally based here?

http://www.boeing.com/company/general-info/

Also, please take a look of the employee breakdown per state, and tell me that the workforce is not based in Washington as well.

Just because it's no longer "headquartered" here, doesn't mean it's not originally based here. And if you use employment count as a metric, it is in fact mostly based in Washington still.

The internet is a place where small men can feel bigger.

Kudos to the Koon and the Cack!

But less judgement is more!

JJ explicitly stated his penchant for illicit drug use. He specifically mentioned marijuana and prescription drugs on multiple occasions. I believe he also mentioned "harder" drugs. He's also posted while under the influence, including vulgar attacks on other posters.

I don't have answers to your other questions, but many of the negative things being said are confirmed by JJ himself, not "unsubstantiated assumptions."

Um, I really didn't need an answer to the question I posed. Instead, I was trying to illustrate a point that I felt needed making. Any time you judge, anytime you don't let an experience move past, and get hung up in it, you are sending an invitation offering some form of mental-ill health to step in.

I remember the comment JJ made. It wasn't an excuse for any behavior he exhibited, but an acknowledgement of his past experiences. Someone being a smart-ass said that it explained his current behavior. It was right around the time he had one of his little upsets. So there is that.

But I want to know from all the jackals, what kind of pleasure do you get even repeating these things? I assume you don't have the empathy or insight to realize how much pain people are in over these kinds of things, even if you did get it right!

Here is an alternative, just for kicks :

Mindfulness is a modern movement, appropriated from ancient Buddhist roots, and clinically innovated by Jon Kabat-Zinn. The practice of mindfulness involves being aware moment-to-moment, of one’s subjective conscious experience from a first-person perspective.[1] When practicing mindfulness, one becomes aware of one’s "stream of consciousness". The skill of mindfulness can be gradually developed using meditational practices that are described in detail in the Buddhist tradition. The Five-Aggregate Model, an ancient link between mind and body, is a helpful theoretical resource that could guide mindfulness interventions.[2] The term "mindfulness" is derived from the Pali-term sati [3] which is an essential element of Buddhist practice, including vipassana, satipaṭṭhāna and anapanasati. It has been popularized in the West by Jon Kabat-Zinn with his mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program.[4]

Mindfulness is also an attribute of consciousness long believed to promote well-being.[5] Large population-based research studies have indicated that the idea of mindfulness is strongly correlated with well-being and perceived health.[6][7] Studies have also shown that rumination and worry contribute to mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety,[8][9] and that mindfulness-based interventions are effective in the reduction of both rumination and worry.[8][10]

Clinical psychology and psychiatry since the 1970s have developed a number of therapeutic applications based on mindfulness for helping people who are experiencing a variety of psychological conditions.[11] Mindfulness practice is being employed in psychology to alleviate a variety of mental and physical conditions, such as bringing about reductions in depression symptoms,[12][13][14] reducing stress,[13][15][16] anxiety,[12][13][16] and in the treatment of drug addiction.[17][18][19] It has gained worldwide popularity as a distinctive method to handle emotions.

Clinical studies have documented the physical and mental health benefits of mindfulness in general, and MBSR in particular.[20][21][22] Programs based on MBSR and similar models have been widely adapted in schools, prisons, hospitals, veterans centers, and other environments.

He's black, or I got that impression, anyway............ so you know he's not allowed to own anything in America; underground or not.

Is it weird that I assumed he was black too? I wonder if it was his avatar? Subliminal messaging.

I'm fairly confident JJ was a chico.

I thought he was a white guy who had adopted a black boy. He seemed to respond to posts with "you guys don't know what's it like but I'm been experiencing it through raising my son".
