Ask Koon, he has to be close to figuring it out.

All in fun Koon!

Psh, I have an underground business set up to get former IE users back in here.

You guys really haven't figured out who Wizard really is yet?

There is no rule against that in your list, as far as I can tell.

Try it and find out.

Does every violation really need to be outlined? I feel like 'over the line' is pretty ambiguous, but still obvious. It's like the Govt's definition of pron. IDK what to call it, but I know it when I see it.

That said, all of my bannings have been wrongful, and hurtful, and done so in jest by actions unbecoming of a moderator, but I'm speaking to the general process.

It would be helpful if every violation were outlined. How can anyone know if he is breaking the rules when he doesn't know what the rules are? "No cursing at moderators" could be added.

In my earliest days I was sent to my room without Scooby Snacks.

I created a persona I called OldAndInTheWay.

He was well and warmly received until he "spoke" up in defense of temporarily banned me.

The cyber nerds/snoops that inhabit the innards of IE sussed me out and shut "his" ass down.

It's all in the ISP. You can run but you can't hide!

Koon has been banned multiple times???? lol

Once for stepping up and freeing Pat because all you other bitches were afraid to do so.

And once for making a stupid comment on my phone that I could not italicize regarding some DE in Texas. I said 'He's black and he's from Texas, sign him up', and was going to italicize once I got to my laptop in like 5 minutes, but I was banned before I had the chance.

Not saying what I did wasn't stupid, it was, but I wasn't finally showing some hidden form of racism I had been covering up. It was just a really dumb time/way/thing to say what was meant as a joke.

How about saying "shove off"? Or "I disagree with that"?

Both are fine, as they're far less disrespectful than "fuck you".

And it would be okay if I said it to another poster, who is not a moderator?

Not OK, but the penalty involved would certainly be less. Sometimes a heated conversation devolves into ad hominem; it happens. You'll likely get warnings the first few times it happens, with penalties eventually escalating to perma-ban if you're obviously incapable of avoiding personal attacks.

But when a mod reaches out to issue a warning, and you tell him to "fuck off", that's not simply losing your temper in a heated argument. That's showing contempt for the entire community and the norms that keep this place functioning. It has nothing to do with mods being a superior class of poster. Most of the time we engage in the board just like normal members. But when we have to intervene to maintain civility, things will end poorly if you lash out.

I don't know, because none of this is written down.

Have you frequented any other message boards with an extensive set of published norms and regulations? We're pretty open with how this board is moderated, and I'd put our due process up against most any other site.

It's not "what" he said or "who" he said it to... it's a combination of those things, while also taking into account past transgressions, and throwing it on top of a general disregard for maintaining civil discourse, instances of which were often outside of the public threads.

He could have said "I disagree with that," and perhaps the situation would be different... but he doubled down on his previous unacceptable conduct with further disregard.

Right. You're digging up a list that was laid as a ground rules list by a former moderator. What is deemed appropriate for this board is up to the interpretation of the moderators along with the subsequent punishment.

As my band director used to always say, "this isn't a democracy; it is a benevolent dictatorship."

As far as why telling me off is worthy of such a punishment is much like what pkt said. All of the mods here like to contribute as regular posters and prefer to do as little moderating as possible (not in a lazy sort of way, just in a "I'd prefer it if people didn't get into cussing matches and off-topic tangents" sort of way). So if I'm posting and someone wants to disagree with me, that's completely fine. If someone tells me I'm an idiot (or some worse concoction), they might get a warning for language but that's usually all. But if your response to being reprimanded (aka I've already had to put my mod pants on because of you) is "fuck you" and you already have a rap sheet in the moderator forum that is bigger than anyone else's, you're probably going to get the hammer.

Hear, hear.

There are times when I feel like mods should start charging vBucks for all of the vLawyering we do in vDisputes.

Kmoose was trolled hard by Wooly, and that got him riled up and he got very defensive because of the accusations being made about him. He crossed the line, but he was trolled and provoked.

I don't think Kmoose is some 'sick F' for what he posted, I think everyone thinks a little differently about these types of posts. Some say 'how could you', and others say 'well it's literally everywhere and I'm not posting it to encourage it so why are you bent out of shape?'

Wooly jumped down Kmoose's throat and publicly tried to paint him as some mentally sick person for posting what probably 20 others would have if Kmoose didn't post it first.

I'm not saying I would have embedded the video, but I also don't believe anyone who did, or would have if Kmoose didn't, is some sort of mental with no regard for human life.

It's not that we were afraid, it's just the fact that nobody outside of you and like...one other person miss Pat.

I want to make it clear that it is not posting the video that got Kmoose banned. I simply issued him an infraction telling him how we want to avoid that and I believed he had no ill intent. And then he went off on me.

Considering that I was one of the only moderators who at one point had not wanted him gone made the decision for his ban easy. He has quite the rap sheet in the mod lounge.

Even if it was possible to outline every violation, people would spend time creatively bending the rules by using slangs/subtleties where if you exchange the words, would be ban-nable by the outlined rules.

It'd be like the policy trying to keep up with technology. Just because you can out smart the rules, doesn't mean you should. It'd make the mods jobs a nightmare to enforce and constantly update. I feel like the common sense banning is the most pragmatic. Especially since these clowns don't even get paid to do this.

I know it wasn't the posting of the video, and it was a result of his heated exchange with wooly, and then how he reacted to you. I'm just saying that heated exchange with wooly, and the subsequent response from you, doesn't happen IMO if he wasn't provoked so hard by Wooly.

If someone on here took something you posted arbitrarily and with no ill will, and publicly made you sound like a psychopath for doing so, we'd all be defensive. I'm not defending his banning or anything like that, just laying out how it snowballed.

I want to point out that I mentioned certain posters having rap sheets in the mod lounge. That is very few and far between. Most posters, even if they have gotten infractions or warnings in the past, do not have a thread dedicated to them. Those types of threads don't usually get started unless mods are talking about how to handle a certain situation or looking for the OK to ban someone. (We typically like to clear any long term bans with the other mods to make sure we aren't being biased. I think you all would be surprised at how much thought is put into serious punishments between the mods.)
