In other news IU basketball just hired Archie Miller from Dayton. I personally like the hire and preferred him over Alford.

I saw it, didn't like the idea of joining the BIG in anything but I'm not schooled enough on college hockey (I really only watch ND) to know the ins and outs on this move...

Big Ten has several programs with great histories. From a geography standpoint, certainly makes sense as well. Looking forward to it.

I definitely do not know enough about hockey, but growing up in B1G country, I love it. Get to play Michigan, Penn State, and tOSU every year. Those are the matchups I look forward to the most in any sport. Just means more to me is all.

ND hockey was in a league with Minnesota, Michigan, MSU, and Wisconsin in the 1970s (the WCHA) and then in a league with Michigan, MSU, OSU, etc., from the 1980s until 2013 (the CCHA). That league then fell apart when Penn State went to D1 hockey and the Big 10 therefore sponsored hockey (meaning that six Big 10 schools had hockey, which is enough for the conference champion to get an auto-bid to the NCAA tournament). So the Big 10 teams in ND's league left, the league fell apart, and ND was left to find a new conference.

Hockey East is a great conference -I would rather stay, personally- but the geographic problem is too great, even in the new world of big conferences. All of the schools save ND are in New England. It doesn't really make a ton of sense, it means you either play a team at home or on the road, while other teams play home-and-homes, etc.

Hockey is unique because (1) only 60 schools have D1 hockey; (2) only 15 of those have D1 FBS football, and only 9 of those are in P5 conferences or are ND; and (3) all but 5 D1 hockey schools are limited to the Northeast and the upper Midwest. So the conference situation has always been different and probably always will be. The Big 10 is as of yet the only P5 conference sponsoring hockey and I doubt that will change anytime soon. Obviously, any association with the Big 10 is to be avoided, but this is increasingly looking like the best option, given what happened after the CCHA fell apart.

One other thing I learned just this year, even though ND has been competitive in Hockey East, they will probably be more so in the Big Ten. One of the main reasons for this is that apparently Hockey East has a number of older freshmen on their teams. They play in various leagues for a couple of years and then they are freshmen at 20 and 21 years old (not all but a significant number). ND doesn't have that and there aren't many (if any) in the Big Ten. At least this is what I am told and heard similar from Darin Pritchard on WSBT SportsBeat radio show (who is also the voice of Irish hockey on the radio). So maybe more trips to the tourney in the future with less drag due to travel.

It's true that Big 10 schools will have younger players, but you're probably going to have to play older teams in the NCAA tournament, so it might help to have games vs. those teams. One nice thing about Hockey East is that it has a mix of younger teams such as BC and BU and older teams such as UML. I assume we will still play OOC games vs. some older teams.

take an Uber!!

A yet unnamed Nike employee has been connected in a pay to ride scandal where shoe money was diverted to fund MSU players' Uber accounts. LJ Scott ran up $12,500 in rides during the last semester but the most shocking is QB Brian Lewerke who used the illegal benefit to pay for a ride back to his home in Phoenix, AZ... a $7500 fare. We reached out to HC Mark Dantonio but he has seemingly disappeared.

50 years since ND played the Illini. That's hard to believe. I think UofI and IU should be on some sort of semi-annual, permanent rotation w/ other B1G locals. They're all border schools which you should win and still get credit for beating a B1G team instead of Temple or New Mexico. Over 10 years play Purdue 4x and NW, IU, UofI twice each.

Might be worthy of its own thread... really gets into the issue that many schools have where the players get NOTHING out of the school:
When I was 10 years old, I wrote an article for the local newspaper that asked me what school I wanted to go to and what I wanted to study. I said Purdue University in their school of Engineering. I didn’t know that one day I would actually be able to attend Purdue on an athletic scholarship. But I wouldn’t be able to go for Engineering. Neither would I be able to go for Athletic Training, my second choice, which I wanted to use to create a path into Physical Therapy School. I was told that the Engineering caseload and class schedule would not work, especially if I had dreams of playing. I was told I would not be able to receive my hours for Athletic Training because they were mostly during football season and spring practice. At that point, I was on my third choice which wasn’t even a choice.

I was literally just there to play football. Having two choices of my own was more than a lot of my teammates and friends at other schools could say as they were left undecided and thrown into General Studies, Communications or Organizational Leadership and Supervision. So while those on the outside are complaining of paying for school because that’s something they value, imagine getting something for free that you aren’t just not interested in, but also something you don’t really know what to do with it.

Shame on Purdue.

Fast forward to post-playing careers (you usually give it one to two years to chase your dream) and now you’re 25 and back in your home towns that you thought you’d never see again. At your parents’ house trying to figure out what’s next. Time to turn to that degree and get to work. That degree that you didn’t want or choose in the first place.

We turn to our coaches and connections from college but they are onto the next set of athletes and could care less about you. There are some exceptions who reached out to help but most of them are looking for their next opportunity, so you’re an afterthought. Off to go into the world and see what this degree can do for me but you come to learn a million years of experience is needed. You come to find out that while you were playing sports that others with the same degree were interning, networking, and gaining valuable experience. So you’re behind the 8 ball.

Many of college students may say we have similar struggles and I’ll say to you, at least you received the degrees you desired. Or, did the university or any other organizations benefit from your abilities? While athletes are grateful (I think), at least in the same manual labor job they’re working, they would have made supervisor by now if not for taking a four-year break to help make others money off of them just to have the same opportunities afforded to them when they graduated.
