Most people think this ND team is more talented than the 2018 team & has better coordinators.
The 2018 ND team went in a ranked VT at night, national TV, raucous environment, & blew VT out 45-23.
You can control the environment with your play. A 95 yard ND TD run shut that crowd up for good.
That team VT ended the year 6-7 which included a loss to Old Dominion.

Point does stand on stadium environment though.

I don’t care about HS rankings once kids have played.
Bad coaching is one thing, but these kids just aren’t as good as their rankings.
And ND’s are better.
National Defensive player of the year was a 3 Star WR.
All American CB was an unranked low 4 Star.
All American DT was an unranked low 4 Star.
QB was a basketball recruit.

ND is deeper & better all over the field.
All over is a stretch.
QB - Wash. Maybe a slight edge to us
RB - ND
TE - ND slight edge
OL - A&M most likely
WR - ND slight edge
DE - A&M
DT - Wash hopefully
LB - Wash, hopefully we end up having an edge here but we'll see
CB - ND major advantage
Safety - ND but I don't know much about their safetied

Idk anything about A&M’s TEs, but I have a hard time believing many teams will be as deep as ND at that position. They have a legit 3 deep.

Why is no one mentioning specials teams!?!? In this kind of game a muffed punt due to the new Aussie punter kicking style, a KO return or punt return could be the difference maker here. I mean, didn't ND bring in an ALL-AMERICAN kickoff returner?

On the latest II podcast, they mentioned that the staff expects about 5 muffed punts this year because of the new Aussie punter

I know. We're always everyone's Super Bowl. Teams don't get up for Alabama nor Georgia--they never have to deal with hostile crowds.

Oh poor poor Marcus, it's not even his fault if we lose. It's those pesky crowds at road games--they like cheer against us and stuff and make loud noises when we're on offense.

I mean how's MFMF supposed to overcome that even with superior talent and coordinators?

Plus it's like only his third year. No ND coach has ever won or played for a national championship in their third year.

It's an insurmountable task to expect a coach to go on the road in the first game of his third year and win. People need to temper their expectations a bit.

It's not like we all used to sit around and harp on Kelly nonstop for losing these types of games.

It's just not fair!

So what college team do you root for? Its obviously you aren't a ND fan.

Did I not say that if they can weather the first 10 minutes they should win or did you gloss over that?

Given your response, I'm guessing Louisville, Duke, NC State, Ball State, Marshall, Miami didn't play above their level? They were just that good?

Looks like the weather forecast in SB next week will cooperate and help the team acclimate to Texas weather a bit. Supposed to be in the low 90s a few days.

Upper 90s and a slight chance of rain in the 10 Day forecast for next Saturday. We should be lucky that this was the week of extreme heat herein Central Texas. Multiple days of 103+, Heat Index over 100 too

They have a legitimate left tackle. 3 of the other 4 are question marks but they also have about 5x the experience of our starters. If our O line ends up being better I'll feel A LOT better about how we fare in this game.

You're only proving my point more. As though that doesn't apply to any other team playing on the road in a hostile environment? You're providing a built-in excuse/soothing mechanism.

If Freeman is the coach everyone hopes/thinks he is and this team is a legit deep run playoff team, then ND should be able to easily dispatch of A&M. And losing should certainly not be on the table.

Can't have it both ways. Freeman is great, coordinators are great, talent is great, blah, blah, blah but then excuse away a loss to an overly raucous crowd and still think all the rest apply as cold hard facts.

But can guarantee if ND does lose it'll be everyone and everything on the planets fault except Freeman.

That's what being a Stan is all about. At least own it I guess and admit your lack of objectivity on the matter is all I'm asking.

The better/deeper roster is debatable. They have been poorly coached but A&M is full of talent.
View attachment 3056240

We have the 5th highest average player rating in the country, its dumb how 247 gives additional value to 5 stars when the "average" already takes that into account, you're essentially double counting it.

In addition, giving additional weight to 5 stars is supposed to account for “elite upside”, and we have numerous elite players on the roster (Watts, BenMo, Cross, Evans), so it’s not like we’re lacking there.

this is a very very deep and talented roster, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

II podcast very down on Mitch Jeter in latest pod
Should clarify, I listened on my post-lunch walk: they asked what could be a concern other than OLine since they wanted to talk about anything else that could be a deficiency with this team. Said Jeter has missed a few and hasn't seemed automatic but then said people around him don't seem concerned.

You never know with kickers so 🤷

They then went on to say if Howard Cross was 100% and Rubio hadn't gotten injured, this would be nearly a perfect defense. Also, Pete said an anonymous coach who has faced Golden said, ~paraphrase ~ "he's incredibly difficult to gameplan against because you have to prepare for everything and he still finds a way to do something different. Then you're trying to adjust to that in-game while he's making adjustments."

Also, they think Golden will have his group dialed in and they think Leonard's mobility is important given the expectation of both Olines struggling.

I don’t expect 5 total punts this year.

Screw this doom posting nonsense from the staff.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I read that as five punts that the other team's returner fumbles because the ball's coming in at an unusual angle. A good thing for us. No?

I was just joking that we won’t have to punt at all.

You are correct. Sounds like the staff thinks his kicking style will cause some whoopsies.

Ha. Sorry, it's early, still on my first cup of coffee.
But yes I too expect few punts. I also expect we give up so few points it doesn't really matter who plays offensive tackle. Enjoying the most wonderful time of the year here.

The Steelers new punter is an Australian and has a huge leg. Hope the Irish benefit from something similar.

Did they clarify that it wasn’t our Aussie punter dropping the snap and muffing it? J/k

He’s probably going to have more shanks than we’re used to.
