Kumar Rocker was a baseball player drafted at 10 by the Mets and reentered the following year after not agreeing to contract terms. Different sport but similar circumstances. I believe the difference was he chose not to go back to Vandy though he could have.
Wasn’t his due to health reasons/passing physical?

Like someone else said, I'm betting that it doesn't work like that and Bengals will still retain rights to his contract. If I remember, that how it works for baseball players that get drafted to the NFL but don't immediately play there or they don't play at all. Pretty sure if a team drafts said player they retain the rights if the player does decide to join the NFL at a later date.

[EDIT] Never mind, I must be thinking of players in the past when guys like Rocket went to CFL and later rejoined NFL. I just found this on ESPN's website under NFL Draft rules:

I guess the question is if he's truly out of his contract or not because of off the field issues?
That's what happened with Bo Jackson. He was drafted #1 overall in 1986 by the Buccaneers, and refused to sign with them. He ended up back in the draft again in 1987 (after he had already started playing baseball), and was taken in the seventh round by the Raiders.

Dang, can you imagine getting a steal like Bo in the 7th round!

I don’t think the Bengals actually have concerns, they’re just the test subjects on more restrictive contract language to offset other “fully guaranteed” money they’ve spent on Burrow, Chase, etc.

They’re trying to set a precedent where the league/teams can mitigate certain risk related to fully guaranteed money on rookie contracts, making negotiations down the road “easier” for the guys that turn into real superstars.

You might have a guy get in trouble, fail drug tests, wash out, etc. Instead of paying your superstar quarterback AND that third-year bust their money, you have extra outs on the dude you don’t want anymore if shit goes off the rails.

Other teams will adopt it, if the Bengals find a way to make it work and still get a signature.

Bengals GM needs fired.

He managed to screw up the draft and piss off their best defensive player in a matter of months.

Big year for him and the head coach. They gotta 4-5 year window where they can be really good if Burrow and his WRs stay on the field
