Now?? Houston was in the old Southwest Conference, played Texas, Arkansas, A&M and the like. The Irish played them in the Chicken Soup Bowl in 1979.

This is what the Cover 3 show was talking about yesterday. They are allowed to do it in baseball, but they don't think the NFL is going to allow this. There will probably be litigation, but they did not anticipate him actually being able to play for them this year. I guess we will see. It would be very player friendly for those players that did not end up getting drafted where they expected, but NFL tends to win more than the NCAA when it comes to these kinds of battles. At least for now.

I think the issue is more NCAA - once they hire an agent and declare for the draft they are no longer deemed "amateur athletes" and they are ineligible to compete in collegiate athletics.

And all of this because of wording in his rookie contract that if he gets into trouble off the field, his 4 year contract is no longer guaranteed. I get his point (if true) that if the other rookies don't have that stipulation in their contracts that it's not necessarily fair. But if the bengals are not sold on his character why even draft him? And is it that hard to stay out of trouble for some of these guys? This is just messy on both sides. And you can't just go back to college after you've declared and been drafted. If he somehow wins in court this will set a horrible precedent.

I remember with La'el Collins years back this was the case. He threatened to sit out a year if he wasn't drafted high enough and would go back to LSU. However since he was an UDFA, he wouldn't have been able to declare for the next year's draft. There's been a CBA agreement since then so I'm not sure if the distinction between drafted/undrafted has changed.
To refresh everyone's memory on Collins, an ex-gf of his had been murdered right before the NFL Draft and although he was declared not to be a suspect by the police, reports were that NFL teams weren't wanting to spend a 1st/2nd on him because they didn't have info on the situation.

Like someone else said, I'm betting that it doesn't work like that and Bengals will still retain rights to his contract. If I remember, that how it works for baseball players that get drafted to the NFL but don't immediately play there or they don't play at all. Pretty sure if a team drafts said player they retain the rights if the player does decide to join the NFL at a later date.
[EDIT] Never mind, I must be thinking of players in the past when guys like Rocket went to CFL and later rejoined NFL. I just found this on ESPN's website under NFL Draft rules:

Kumar Rocker was a baseball player drafted at 10 by the Mets and reentered the following year after not agreeing to contract terms. Different sport but similar circumstances. I believe the difference was he chose not to go back to Vandy though he could have.
