Episode 7 was subtitled Shadow of the Empire before ultimately being changed to The Force Awakens. Not sure which title I prefer. Force Awakens has some symbolic meaning in terms of the franchise as a whole, but shadow of the empire is pretty badass.

So I was watching the prequels again on YouTube. Some guy has created an "anti-cheese edit" for all three. It cuts out anything with Jar Jar, body function jokes, some of the scenes with Anakin and Padme, references to midichlorians, etc. It's actually pretty good.

While watching TPM, I noticed a statue in Anakin's room. It looks like Maz Kanata. I googled it and found a few other people talking about it as well. She's supposed to be hundreds of years old, so it wouldn't be out of the question that JJ took the statue as the model for the character...

We decided to do a family photo star wars themed with things we had laying around the house. I'll be honest, I think they turned out damn good.

That's already a book title that takes place between Empire and Jedi. Not sure if it is still considered canon or not.

It was also a comic series, video game, and had an entire score written and recorded for it to listen to while reading it.

The helmet that Rey outs on in the beginning of the movie belonged to Captain Dosmit Raeh of the Tierfon Yellow Aces according to the Visual Dictionary. Notice that last name?

Hmmm...

couple thoughts and questions:

Ren (solos son) died at the end--did he not? if not, exactly how did he get off the exploding planet?

do we know who Rey parents are? who do we think they might be?

carrie fisher (leia) is shot...all JJs horses and all JJs makeup men just cant put her back together again. hope whe doesn't last into the next ones.

Rey stole the picture...that kids gonna be a star. (is already?)

Snoke told Hux to get Ren and bring Ren to him, so that he could finish Ren's training. Ren is still alive.

I give the movie an 8/10.

I thought Disney had too much of an influence on it. Examples include the characters being young and acting like it. The random humor. I'm sure others have already mentioned some of the other minor parts.

However my biggest pet peeve is the villain. I think he is way too immature to be a villain. The way he slashes his lightsaber like his throwing a tantrum when things don't get his way. He is way too childish. Even Anakin whom everyone picks on for this doesn't act this way. I like my villains (and particularly my Star Wars villains) to be collected and calm, acting as if they are in control at all times. I feel like Disney wanted him to be that way so younger viewers could see that he was a "bad guy". But that just didn't tickle my fancy.

Anyways put me in a category that believes that Rey is actually a reincarnated Anakin back to restore balance to the force, rather than the offspring of Luck/Obi-Wan/Han Solo

Yeah, I think this movie, like ESB, was written as part of a trilogy and not a stand-alone movie on any level. Kylo Ren is NOT the main bad guy, and maybe not even number 2.

I disagree. I think Kylo Ren being the main bad guy is needed for continuity that the prequels didn't have. He was a baby because he's a petulant child. That's important to the character. I don't think it's a Disney pander.

Agreed. Kylo Ren is arguably the most interesting character of the movie for this reason IMO.

He's destroying the monitor and choking people because that's how he thinks Gramps would've handled it. I think that's a cool idea.

Agreed. The brilliance of the way Kylo Ren is written is precisely because he's not cool, calm, and collected. He wants so bad to be Vader and he's not, and that infuriates me. His flickering lightsaber is a symbol of his volatility. He's a loose cannon, not a precision machine.

LOLWUT

Aside from the fact that I don't believe there is any precedent for reincarnation in the Star Wars universe, and that reincarnation would be a terribly cheap, unnecessary and ridiculous crutch for the writers, Rey seems to have exactly zero in common with Anakin from a makeup/disposition standpoint. Rey being Luke's daughter would accomplish essentially the same narrative structure but without any of the issues mentioned above.

And he's conflicted as hell about it. That's why it was so painful for him to kill his father and that's why he keep breaking stuff. Only after killing Han does Snoke want him to complete his training.

We get to watch him develop as a character. It could be really cool.

It crossed my mind that Rey is actually the chosen one, not Anakin. Or wait...it's Harry, not Neville...crap...

Seriously though, maybe Rey is supposed to bring balance to the force. Or maybe they're dumping that story line. That'd probably be okay.

Plot twist.

Rey turns bad, Ren turns good and Luke kills his daughter and seconds later he dies.

Absolutely loved it but thought that Ren should've taken his helmet off only the 2nd time. The 1st time he did it it served no purpose, could've been more powerful the 2nd time.

Random question for hardcore SW geeks:

There is a scene where Finn fights a storm trooper that unleashes some sort of retractable weapon from his arm. As they are fighting, Finn's lightsaber makes contact with the weapon numerous times, doing no damage to it.

My question: I was under the impression a lightsaber can cut through absolutely anything in the universe, except another lightsaber blade. Is there some definitive call on this? (Looking at you, Wizards)

Saw it. It was fine. I think that what it does best is set up movie 2 very well. I loved Adam Driver as Ren.

Anything physical. This was obviously some sort of energy weapon. Those previously existed in the EU but this is the first time they've been seen in a movie.

Weapons that can withstand lightsabers have been around since the Old Republic (non-canon). Cortosis is an ore that shorts out a lightsaber beam, and it was woven into steel and other materials to prevent weapons and armor from being cleaved by lightsabers. This looked like some kind of energy weapon rather than a cortosis-weave.

Didn't Grievous' robot minions have similar weapons in Episode III?

Looked like metal staves with electricity at the ends.

Can I just say that I'm tired of hearing about the EU? Even before Disney (rightly) squashed all of that stuff, I always felt that if it wasn't in a movie then it was just nerds talking amongst themselves. I'm actually annoyed that there are comics and cartoons and video games that are officially canon. It is too much to follow. I'm never going to read a comic book or play a video game, and I'm probably not watching 30 episodes of a cartoon, either. I am excited about the upcoming expanded universe that will be the Anthology Series, though.
