I don't mind opinions in sports writing, even far out ones. That's the name of the game. I did mind the writing itself. It's rather amateur. It's the kind of quality you expect from Chat Sports or a Bleacher Report slideshow.

On top of that, if you want to have an opinion and say "I think Michigan wins because Hoke is fat and I always go with the more obese coach" or "Michigan always catches every break imaginable and they'll have Big Ten refs, so..." or even "I just have a hunch that Gardner has a big year" I'm fine with it.

But instead she pretends that she's using facts/stats/information/logic to come to her conclusion... and at the same time, many of the reasons she gives on the surface don't even make sense. Here's a blow-by-blow of where her "article" trips over itself:
-First she says that Michigan will win because they want to make a statement. She says the emotion will be "huge" for Michigan. Is the implication that Notre Dame WON'T want to make a statement? This doesn't make any sense.

-She says to expect Gardner to show up big because he does in all rivalry games. She says that with the exception of MSU in '13 he has exceeded expectations in all rivalry games... well, even with the clever phrasing, that's not true. He's quarterbacked 4 total rivalry games: OSU '12, ND '13, MSU '13, OSU '13. He had horrible games in two of them (OSU '12, MSU '13) where his average raw QBR was a 30.1 and a 8.5. In the other two, he put up QBRs of 87.9 and 85.7. So half the time he totally sucks, the other half the time he performs like a top QB. The epitome of inconsistency, but she implies the very opposite. 0 for 2 at this point in logic.

-She says that where ND is replacing players relative to where Michigan is replacing players, that it is good that offenses are further ahead than defenses early in the season. This, again, doesn't track. The premises in no way support this conclusion. 0 for 3.

-She then states that ND is thin at DL and LB. Thumbs up. She then touts two players who had a combined 387 yards on 3.5 YPC with only 2 TDs as strengths. Strike 1, for comparison Folston had 470 on 5.3 YPC and 3 TDs himself... and McDaniel had 705 on 4.6... Michigan's "strength" makes Cam McDaniel look like freaking Adrian Peterson. She also doesn't talk about Michigan's OL that is replacing Taylor Lewan at all, which is actually what matches up the front 7. Strike 2. For those keeping score at home she's now 1 for 6 on facts/logic passing even the most generous sniff test.

-She notes that ND allowed 168 on 4.2 last year... so then those unproven backs that averaged 3.5 + Gardner that will be running behind a bad OL should "easily" get 200+ at 4.5. There's a lot wrong here, but most of all she is not appreciating that ND was actually very solid against the run versus "normal" teams, and that those vanilla stats are GROSSLY skewed by Air Force (290) and Navy (331). Is Michigan going to run the option with Nuss? 1 for 7.

-She says ND has a "weakness in experience" at WR. DaVaris Daniels, if he returns, will be coming into his 3rd year as a starter. And there are a multitude of other guys who got limited successful reps last season while playing behind TJ Jones (a combined 1,647 yards and 13 TDs returns). Michigan, by contrast, returns only roughly 1200 yards receiving and 8 TDs. So that's 1 for 8.

-She then notes that ND has a good QB and RBs, but they will have to run against a much more stout front 7 led by Frank Clark on the DL backed by the one of the best LB corps in the conference. +1 for no logical contradictions, -1 for not appreciating that no one is scared of a player with 43 total tackles and 5 sacks and is projected as a late round pick. To mention him as a strength and include someone like Jaylon Smith in a "weakness" group is absurd. 2 for 10.

-She then talks about the yards allowed by Michigan but says don't worry there are lots of players returning and there's a shift in defensive philosophy that will lead to improvement. Yet she dedicated half her article to talking about how ND vanilla stats from last year are telltale without ever once mentioning a complete change in defensive philosophy with a new DC. 2 for 11.

-She talks about a "secondary advantage" for Notre Dame... and while Russel is quite good... most people regard CB/S some of the bigger question marks on the team. Then she talks about Funchess getting mismatches on LBs even though Smith might be one of the best cover LBs in the game this year. So she closes 2 for 13 by my scorecard.

Even for ESPN, a blog post that appears with the writing quality of a high school text message that is devoid of nuance or logical interpretation of information is pretty bad.

Reps, couldn't have said it better myself. Her utter lack of understanding or logic is remarkable. Let me just say, I hope that Hoke has a similar understanding of the ins and outs of next year's matchup.

I assure you he does. Hoke hasn't been responsible for a single UM win over us.

Quite the suspension

Suspended Michigan o-lineman back at practice | CollegeFootballTalk

Michigan suspended offensive lineman Graham Glasgow for a violation of team expectations last week. Apparently, he has served his time. Glasgow has returned to spring practices and workouts earlier this week, but his suspension for Michigan’s season opener against Appalachian State is still to be enforced.

“He’s back, there’s internal discipline that he’s going through, life lessons that he’s learned,” Michigan head coach Brady Hoke said, per MLive.com.

Glasgow was reportedly arrested for a driving-related offense, which is believed to have been the reason for the suspension by the Wolverines. Keeping him out for one game seems like a good enough punishment based on what we know at this point, and the fact he is back and practicing with the team now in spring practices is not a real problem. He will still be punished for whatever offense by missing playing time.

Glasgow is one of Michigan’s most experienced lineman returning in 2014, and Hoke went on record suggesting he is one of their best at the position earlier this spring.

And right now...at the top of my browser page theres an advertisement for the Michigan Roth School of Business. Seriously, fuck Michigan.

Oddly enough, after I refreshed the page I started getting an advertisement for some Japanese website with scantily clad women. I blame ACamp for that one.

Let's put in perspective that he was not charged with an NCAA violation nor a team rule, he was guilty of the dreaded "violation of team expectations"

On that basis Jason Forcier was lucky he escaped with his life.

True, but since he actually got arrested and Hoke had already said he'd be out against App State, I thought he'd be out all spring as well. Not calling for his head, but I was surprised to see he was back at practice.

Michigan student government releases its investigation report on sexual misconduct policy following Brendan Gibbons expulsion | MLive.com

"The university was regularly missing its 60-day deadline to investigate sexual misconduct," Proppe said Sunday night. "The main reason, at least initially when the moved to the new policy, was that the university didn't have the bandwidth to handle all these investigations. They took about a year to hire a second investigator to look into this.

"So that was probably the most surprising and most concerning finding, that the delay in the Gibbons case was really not an exception but kind of the norm with these investigations."

. . .

The Michigan Daily reported this winter that Gibbons was notified of his expulsion on Dec. 19, and the expulsion became official on Dec. 20.

Per the CSG's report, the task force claimed that athletic department officials did not believe the OIE or OSCR failed to notify the department "when a student athlete was accused of sexual misconduct." As a result of that finding, the task force concluded that "Brady Hoke knowingly issued false statements in December 2013 concerning the status of Gibbons."

Proppe said the task force's report has strong evidence to suggest that communication between the athletic department -- which includes head coaches -- and both the OIE and the OSCR has been strong.

He said that the report's findings suggest Hoke was aware of the Gibbons investigation when it began in August, he was aware when the OSCR found Gibbons to be in violation of this policy in November and he was aware that Gibbons had been expelled, officially, on Dec. 20.

Link to the findings https://csg.umich.edu/executive-branch/executive-committee/presidents-posts/task-force-report-august-2013-sexual#overlay-context=

They have to deal with a DOE investigation this week, too.

The craziest thing is that Michigan was missing a SIXTY DAY deadline to investigate. Two months!!!! That was their TARGET and they couldn't hit it.

Can't help but contrast this to ND. Consider the main gripe with NDSP was that they took "too long" to get in touch with Shembo when they finally reached him ~2 weeks after the incident was reported, and first attempted to contact him only a few days after she gave her final statement.

If NDSP was slow in investigating a lowest level sexual battery case, then Michigan is freaking glacial in investigating a forcible rape claim. AND they had their coach lie about it/tried to cover up the dismissal.

Unbelievable.

Monday Michigan Football Recruiting Roundup Has Visit Reactions - Maize n Brew

Michigan Offers Two '16 WRs

Late Friday afternoon the Michigan coaching staff sent out some feelers on two 2016 receivers. Cameron Chambers and Nate Craig have both reported offers from Michigan.

These offers don't exactly move the needle for me, so to speak. Especially for Craig, who recently told 247's Keith Niebuhr that Auburn is his current leader ($).

Craig also released a top-five as well. Which include:

Auburn (obviously)
Ohio State
Clemson
Tennessee
Florida State
At this point, it's fair to say that Michigan would be a long shot for Craig's signature.

As for Chambers, he is very early in his recruiting stage but also has earned double-digit offers already in this cycle. However, I believe it will be difficult for Michigan to land Chambers. There's not much information about Chambers currently, so this process will evolve over the coming weeks and days and things will start to become more clear soon.

Below is a highlight tape from Chambers.

Rivals' Tim Sullivan breaks down Michigan's recent offers ($) that include Chambers and Craig.

Visitor Notes

As I touched on Friday, Michigan was expecting a busy visitor weekend. Although the group was relatively small, it's all about quality not quantity. The talent that was featured on campus was impressive and it is fair to say that Michigan has a legitimate shot with every one they had on campus.

First, let's start with 2015 4-star TE Chris Clark. Remember when I said this recruitment is going to be a little weird? Yeah, it's fair to say it's getting a bit weird (FREE).

Bill Kurelic of Bucknuts reports that the battle for four-star tight end Chris Clark (Avondale, Conn./Avondale Old Farms) looks to be down to two schools. "It's looking like Michigan and Ohio State," Clark told Kurelic earlier today, adding he may not take a planned visit to Auburn now.
Well then, that's a bit of a swing. From going to being committed to a school in earlier in the week, to narrowing things down radically after one weekend visit? It's getting weird.

You can't discredit Clark's interest in Michigan though, he's been high on the Wolverines since they've offered. It's just going to be a bit of a strange recruitment here on out. Whether Michigan will get his signature when all is said and done remains to be seen.

It appears that Clark also received the royal treatment ($) from the current players, especially from Jake Butt.

Clark especially spent a lot of time with Jake Butt, who talked a little with him about why he chose Michigan and what he likes about the program.

"Michigan is a pretty young team, but they're going to play the guys they think will produce, and that's something I noticed with Jake," he said. "Even being an Ohio guy, Jake said there's something great about Michigan and it's something he realized when he was visiting there as a recruit that it was a special place. That's something that stood out to me."

It also appears that Michigan made some positive progress on 2015 4-star defensive end Clelin Ferrell this weekend as well. It appears that Ferrell would like to come back to Michigan ($) to visit again in the near future.

"I want to come back (to Michigan)," he said. "It will either be sometime this summer or for an official visit. I haven't fully decided where I want to take my official visits yet, but there's a good chance that Michigan will be one of them. I just want to take some more unofficial visits to get a better idea of the types of schools I want to consider and will go from there."
Michigan might not land Ferrell, but with the way Michigan has recruited the private school territory of Virginia as of late, anything is possible.

After his recent offer, Bredeson was back on campus to see more of what Michigan has to offer. According to Bredeson, this visit was focused on more of the academic side of things ($). Michigan offers a program to former athletes called the M-PACT program. It has always been something visitors has talked about and it did not disappoint for Bredeson.

"My mom loved the M-PACT portion of the presentation," he said. "It really impressed her how Michigan has an excellent system set up to help their athletes during and after their time at the school. The fact that they can give you a ton of concrete examples of where former players are and what they're doing just makes it that much better."

The players also seemed to impress Bredeson by acknowledging Mattison in public.

"I was walking with Coach Mattison down the street, and a bunch of the players must have a house nearby because they all started screaming and yelling "Hi!" to Coach," he said. "That's something I thought was pretty cool because on both my visits, I've been able to see that the players and coaches really gel well and that the players feel comfortable being themselves around everyone on the coaching staff. It's definitely something about Michigan that stands out."
General Aside

Many (including myself) expected 2016 OL Thiyo Lukusa to be Michigan's second offensive lineman commitment in the 2016 class back in February. As we all know, that didn't happen. Rivals' Branden Hunter spoke with Lukusa and it appears that he is slowing down his recruitment ($).

Lukusa does mention other schools like Michigan State and Alabama, but I do expect Michigan to land the lineman eventually. He has plenty of time to make a decision.

Report: Visits to Sooners, Louisville next up for ex-Tide lineman | CollegeFootballTalk

Looks like Lindsay to UM isn't a done deal yet. I hope he goes to Louisville.

This would be huge, IMO. His transition to UM is seemless, considering he'd be with his former OC. Please dear God, let that OL suck.

Rumor swirling around:

Mitch McGary to announce he will go pro Thursday.

Skipped all of his final exams so it seems very likely he will not be returning.
