I agree. Whether it’s true or not. They’ll say Urban told Gene but since no charges were ever pressed, they didn’t do anything. Since that’s not acceptable now, Gene gets his walking papers. And, Urban is essentially absolved of all responsibility/blames. So, he gets a slap on the wrist.

Not to defend Urban, but would this be as big of a deal and his job in jeopardy pre-#Metoo? I'm absolutely not saying it shouldn't have been, but it seems more likely that before this was such a hot button issue, SOP would've been Smith fired, Urban given a slap on the wrist, and that would've been the end of it. With all this supposedly happening in '09 to '15, I think most programs during that time would've handled it internally or taken a "That's a personal matter between husband & wife" approach. I think Urb's a low-character guy, but to a great extent, he may have just handled this whole thing by the standard of that time.

I don't have the time to research it but how many coaches have been fired for domestic violence? The one I remember is Mike Haywood who accepted the HC job at Pitt and then was arrested 2 weeks later for domestic violence and fired within hours of his arrest (Pitt did not hold some "independent investigation" or wait to see the outcome - which had the charges decreased later). This was back in 2010 when DV was not as big of an issue in the media as it appears to be today. Zach Smith was kept after multiple issues and only fired now with UM lying about what he knew. There is no reason he should not be fired. Everyone knows he decides who is on his coaching staff. It was his choice to keep Zach and his alone and as a result he should have been fired within days of Zach being fired.

I think it is the #metoo movement and all of the media attention that comes with these reports that surface today. That's what has put OSU under a microscope. The NFL isn't putting any pressure on the NCAA or OSU to do something. The Ray Rice fiasco was as bad as it gets (short of murder). It may be used as an example, but I've not heard or read anything that correlates OSU's actions with the Rice incident.

Missing the point. Domestic violence in football became a much bigger deal after the Ray Rice incident and DV continues to be a focus point in the NFL (see: Zeke Elliot). As a result of the horrid RR video and the continued media scrutiny of DV in sports (especially football), no media relations individual, nor an athletic department, wants to be accused of looking past DV.

Maybe I am being dense, but the Metoo movement has nothing to do with DV. The only correlation that I can draw is the movement giving people courage to talk publicly about things they otherwise wouldn't. But for people (not saying you, but more in general) to say this is a result of the metoo movement is completely missing the point.

And in this case there’s someone between you and that project engineer on the org chart, someone who hired and directly supervised the engineer, who knows at least as much about the screw-up that you do and chose to keep him around anyway. (And who, not for nothing, gets paid way more than you do). It’ll be interesting to see how they spin how you’re the one who’s really at fault here.

If the allegations of domestic violence are true. Someone did not take action. And that is of the highest level of bad behavior you can perform. If someone comes to you, your wife, or the athletic director, and says they are being assaulted, and you don’t do anything about it, or even worse, actively try to conceal it, that makes you complicit to the crime being committed. Urban Meyer fired Zach Smith only after the media found out about the DV!!! Don’t let the media or the Ohio State lying factory cloud your judgement, if Urban Meyer knew and this stuff is true, he should be banned from coaching even Pee Wee football for life.

The duty is the point of contention here. It's rather gray and is open to how the BoT wants to interpret. It has been documented well that in Smith's contract, there is specific language that requires him to immediately report to the university and athletic department's compliance departments if he has reasonable cause to believe that a person has violated or is likely to violate or may potentially have violated laws or OSU policies, rules or regulations. If Smith failed to go up the chain of command, he probably would be in breach of his contract. If Smith did report it to the proper people and they left the decision to retain Zach Smith to Gene Smith, it could still be deemed a violation of that ethical and moral standards clause.

Simply put, I will be surprised if there isn't at least one "fall guy". Could be Urban. Could be Gene. Could be both. But my money is on Gene, specifically since his contract has about 16 months left on it. The tricky part will be if Smith doesn't play nice, is there enough granularity to support firing Gene but nor Urban.

I think we're splitting hairs and are essentially in agreement. To the bolded part, the #metoo movement does give people the courage to come forward, but most of what they are coming forward on are cases of domestic violence and sexual abuse. Think of it as a tool to bring awareness of these crimes and start the process, not necessarily the tool to remedy the problem. They go hand in hand IMO.

If true, I tend to agree. Since Meyer's apology and seeing the likely direction they were taking this, I haven't thought he was going to be fired. So not real surprised, but I do love the hypocrisy of it. Can't believe this dude can sleep at night.
