The backstory is that the Carr family got assurances that CJ COULD reclassify. They got this assurance so CJ could have ND any way he wants. Meaning, by giving an option to reclassify to the Carr family, it clears the decks for CJ of Dante and any other Top 100 QB.
No way that's accurate. I could buy that the staff told Carr he could pick either '23 or '24 after they had made the decision to move on from Moore, but not that they would lose Moore just to give Carr the option of reclassifying.

It is no coincidence that just before the announcement Dante stopped lining up his summer visit. There were also analysts who criticized Rees for taking the sure thing too soon in his recruiting. Dante isn't concerned with a 2024 QB except one that could reclassify to 2023 and was supposedly Rees's #1 QB on all Class Boards for Rees (total Bullshit and spin btw).

Nothing that has happened thus far invalidates this reality.

I don't mind and even like CJ Carr in ONE of the classes but not BOTH of the classes. ND should not sell its soul to get one 5 star at the expense of BOTH CLASSES. This is why Dante moved on. There was lots of assurances and prerogatives given to the Carr family. I would have done the same. Its less about NIL and more about being muscled out.
That's certainly one way to look at it.

Another is that Dante gave a silent to the staff back in early spring and the staff sat comfortably on their hands waiting for Dante and his family to go public. Only he kept kicking the can down the road while feeling out other schools and their NLI propositions. Eventually, the staff could see how this was likely to play out. They took the 2024 5 star QB, grandson of a Michigan legend, and told him he could reclassify if he wants. He has to make a decision relatively soon so the staff know if they are still recruiting 23 or now recruiting a new 24 QB.

Would you rather have no QBs right now or 1 QB right now? Because that's the only option. Dante is still uncommitted and the staff waited the better part of 2-3 months for him to make his "silent verbal" official and it never came. Meanwhile, CJ said he wanted to commit and did so nearly immediately.

The staff were put in a bad position by the Moore camp, IDGAF what anyone else says (unless they have evidence that Dante never silently committed to ND). The Moores gave their word, then once they had a spot locked up, they went shopping around to see what other deals were out there. The Moores didn't get burned by ND. ND got burned but didn't throw a fit or badmouth Dante, they left it open to Dante but accepted a different QB who was already sold on the program.

Don't do it often but thumbs down from me.

There is absolutely zero issues with telling Carr he could re-class if they think he's that good and he's able to do it. The first bolded puts a negative spin on a very positive situation. We were in a bad spot thanks to the dishonesty of the Moore camp and ND found their way out of it by telling a 5 star QB he can pick what class he's in. That's awesome. Absolutely awesome work that they were not only able to land the talent but the talent that has the ability to do it.

Also, let's be clear, CJ Carr is not taking up both classes. For this brief period of time they are using CJ to recruit both classes because he's a baller and willing do so, like Dante wasn't. But, they most definitely plan on taking a QB in which ever class he's not in. I too wish they'd be pressing harder on QB's in both classes so they are more prepared for when CJ does make his decision but this notion that he's the QB for 2 classes is patently wrong. He's an elite player that brought a lot of hype to the program. They'd be stupid not to use it while they figure everything else out.

ND wrongfully gave up all leverage to folks that abused said leverage. The problem with the Moore recruitment wasn't how the staff ended it. It was that they didn't end it sooner. With either a commitment or recruiting other QB's.

The fact is ND and Rees ARE NOT recruiting QBs right now. No new offers or developments. THEY ARE awaiting Carr’s reclassification determination. Therefore QB recruiting is waiting on “Carr’s Option.”

In granting the Carr Option instead of not agreeing to Carr’s Option - Moore is gone and QB recruiting is halted to a standstill.

Landing Carr is great. Granting them the Reclass Option with open ended time frame has the very clear result of pushing Moore away. Not good.

Many Rees fans don’t want to see this. Carr family are not babes in the woods about football and they dictated terms to Tommy and Tommy took them - thus ending Dante’s recruitment.

No reason why Rees couldn’t be recruiting QBs in either 2023 or 2024 based on Carr’s end class but that’s not happening. ND should land Moore in 2023 and Carr in 2024 but Tommy gave them the terms that have now quieted QB recruiting.

I think Mr. Drunk might be exaggerating how drastic in nature QB recruiting being at a “standstill” during a time literally called a dead period is. If they need a 2023 QB it’d think they have to flip someone probably closer to ESD. If they need a 2024 QB, they hadn’t even offered Arnold or Vizzina at this stage last year and they just hosted some campers that Rees likely is considering.

No reason why Rees couldn’t be recruiting QBs in either 2023 or 2024 based on Carr’s end class but that’s not happening. ND should land Moore in 2023 and Carr in 2024 but Tommy gave them the terms that have now quieted QB recruiting.
Do you have any inside info to confirm this bat-shit insane interpretation of events? Or is this just based on assuming the worst about Rees (as it seems to be?)

Here's a more realistic order of events: (1) the Moores silently committed to ND with a mutually agreed upon deadline for public announcement; (2) ND shut down '23 QB recruiting; (3) the Moores moved the goal posts on their public announcement; (4) ND rightfully loses confidence that the Moores can be trusted; (5) 5-star Carr wants in for '24 and is willing to reclassify to '23; (6) ND is holding off on which class to take him in until Moore makes his decision.

Moore in '23 and Carr is '24 is amazing. Carr in '23 with a shot at Sayin or some other QB in '24 is still damned good. The only scenario that ND fans might be able to grumble about is no one in '23 and Carr in '24, but that seems very unlikely at this point.

The staff has months to go here. We will get a '23 QB. If it's not Carr, it'll be some late riser or flip we're not talking about yet. The alternative - not taking a '23 - is such a bad idea on its face that it's not going to happen, and some solid three-star will jump for the opportunity. At this point in his recruiting cycle Ian Book was committed to Washington State.

I hope we get a 3-4 star project. Big arm, big work ethic if that’s the route we go. Rees needs to develop someone with high upside, but raw. I’d prefer we look away from the Books and Brendan Clark’s. While they’re good solid kids, they don’t seem to have, besides GA in the last decade, to win NCs or gone in the first round. Try and develop a Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes. Tall Dual threat with a cannon.

So a Tommy Rees with a better arm...

Sure. That works. Or a tall dual that has a big arm. I was thinking tall, 6’3 to 6’6 type that can move. with a good head and work ethic. Athletic. Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes were rated low and fit that. At least there’s be a lot of potential NFL upside. But what do I know. Just a dummy on a message board. Of course I’d rather have Dante and CJ.

Edit, I thought you said Book. Not Rees. No, I don’t want Rees. TR was a bad athlete and not a good arm. Lol. Hell no.

Yes. Why do you think Sayin isn’t on ND’s radar? And why is Moore gone? Top targets in BOTH classes have moved on. ND’s future rests only with the Carr’s. Rees said Carr was the #1 recruit in his mind in both classes - which is crazy talk.

ND should not be okay w this but Rees is.

So what you're saying is that Tommy Rees personally rejected commitments from Jackson Arnold and Chris Vizzina? And let CJ text Dante that he wasn't wanted?

That's clearly the most reasonable set of inferences one can draw here. I mean... Irishdrunk can't be the only one here that remembers the Tulsa game, right?

Yep. Dante and family thought they had a great product. Took it to the Shark Tank and got a bite. Then kept putting off acceptance hoping another shark would bite. In the meantime shark #1 grew tired of staring at the shiny bait and got themselves a meal with CJ.

There's a lot of well-connected posters here, so unless you're privy to intel that literally no one else has, I'm not inclined to believe your version of events. There are several other scenarios still in play that would see Rees come out smelling like roses. Until they're foreclosed, it just looks like you've got an axe to grind against Tommy.

This is where I’m at too. I’m not sure the entire true story ever comes out, but this is the most plausible based on what actual real reporting has been all along. Im sure ND feels burned, but shouldn’t go public as it’s a bad look to drag a kid for “changing his mind”

As someone with no inside information, I agree — this seems like the most reasonable conclusion to draw. DM waited too long, so Tommy took the bird in hand. Simple.

Why is this "crazy talk"

By many accounts, CJ has outperformed a lot of the big named '23 kids at camp.

Right. Even if there's an unwritten rule now that 5-star QBs don't want to come in immediately before or after one another, so that Rees had to pick one among Moore, Carr and Sayin: (1) I've got no reason to prefer Sayin over Carr; and (2) Moore has given us plenty of reasons to prefer Carr over him.

I listened to Power Hour yesterday.

Mike Frank thinks that ND should keep pushing for Dante. He thinks they don't need to rush into a 2023 backup option. He said that he believes Dante always wanted ND and one day he will remember that ND is for him.

This comes off Power Hour about two weeks ago were he said Rees/Freeman were fools for chasing after an NIL hungry kid and that they've wasted time and need to rush into a decision.

It is odd that Dante has not committed to Oregon yet or even set a date. Something is keeping him from even setting a date. I wouldn’t call that an abundance of confidence in OR’s direction.
