Scheduled South Florida to replace Western Michigan.

USF was quite bad last year, especially late in the season. Fired Charley Strong. Had some high profile transfers from Michigan, Devin Gil and Eddie McDoom, who have both opted out for 2020 already.

Devin Studstill transferred there from ND and was one of their best players last year, which shows how thin their talent is. (Studstill is out of eligibility)

USF REALLY needs the $. They have been trying for years to get the funding for a new stadium without getting enough to do it. Overpaying Strong, and then buying him out, hasn't helped.

Charley Jr is their new Offensive Co-odinator.

Definitely a schematic advantage for USF!

The routine weekly Prister column from II. He states within that Irish Illustrated is hearing from ND sources that the season will not go on if the general student body is sent home to conduct on-line classes through the fall semester. This lines up with what we heard earlier, but I think there was some optimism that the administration had backed off that stance.

Why does the admin care?

Guess they just hate money and fun.

they don't want student-athletes getting power/demanding compensation down the line

What he/she said. You're going to see a lot of schools give up short-term money to guard the long-term money they get by not paying their labor. I promise you bubbles would be set up by now if players were already getting paid.

In July Jack said we wouldn't play if there were no students on campus but since then we've "joined" the ACC for this season. If North Carolina's response is any indicator the conference is OK with football continuing while the students are sent home.

Could be a difficult decision if we pull out after the conference took us in so willingly. Then again, if teams keep testing positive they'll only be enough teams left to form two leagues.

BTW we had 5 positives today (Wednesday tests) with 6 more in contact. Will test again Fri.

Didn’t Jack make that statement way back in April? Would have been way before they were even considering joining the ACC

The difference is that ND views itself as an academic institution first. I don't think UNC, Clemson, FSU or the like are of the same mindset. This isn't about Jack, it's about the BOT and Jenkins. I have a real hard time believing they would allow football to continue if students are sent home. It would be a 180 for them in terms of how the run the university.

EDIT: And for the record, if ND would allow football to continue with the students sent home, I see no way that Jack, Jenkins, or the BOT could ever argue against paying them. While I know they will say the players "deserve" a season based on how they have handled protocol, but I guarantee you that ND wouldn't do that if not for the $$ football brings in. If it were spring sports, I think they would be sent home without a second thought.

yes, well before July. My point doesn't change tho, will joining the ACC change our stance?I can see both sides especially with the crap the Big 10 has been taking from all directions for their decision to defer.

I agree with you 100% Nda , in my humble experience.

What is really interesting is Jenkins position with the BOT. Jenkins put himself in a difficult spot when early on (May) he went nationwide in the NY Times with a heroic stance about why Notre Dame was re-opening.

See https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/26/opinion/notre-dame-university-coronavirus.html

He obviously had to run that position through the BOT and take personal responsibility for it, so he has some face and leadership cred in the mix.

I think he will stick with that as long as possible, or get creative before going back to the BOT.
Maybe Juniors/Seniors only until spring - who knows?

Hopefully, it does not get to that.

So we live in the south bend area. My wife was next door to off campus apartments last night at an event. She said there was definitely a party going on. Police were there as well. Soooooo the students don’t care. Seasons about to go in the toilet. Sorry for my pessimism, but that just pissed off my evening when she told me.

Not surprised. When it comes down to the basics, students at ND are no different than students at any other university.

If I were 19 and unleashed back to college life after 5 months at my parents house, I probably wouldn't have been mature enough to follow those protocols (as a non athlete) either.

I'd be in prime shape for slamming Natty Lights and women with loose morals.

All good points. I would expect -- if they get closer and closer to sending students home, which I think they are trending at the moment -- that you might see players put out something saying they want to play regardless. Or maybe not. The fact that it no affects ~10% of the team is not boding well.

My daughter seems to think the consensus is that kids believe it's not if, but when they get sent home.

Given that a significant amount of kids that it's a given they will be sent home, they think we might as well party it up while we can.

Fewer cases at ND today:

If they can continue bending the curve over the next few days, things will start looking up.

And surveillance testing is beginning today as well, so we should have a broader sense of how much community spread we have and whether it’s still relatively contained within the “seniors living off-campus” bubble.

You left out Bama in your list. Word is leaking out that they are about to go virtual but it won't affect football. I don't see how anyone could think that there wouldn't be outbreaks once students came back. I was in T Town two weeks ago during the first move in weekend visiting friends and the Strip was pretty packed and many students - and parents - not seeming too concerned with wearing masks, social distancing, etc. Throw in the fact that high school football kicks off tonight as well.

The definition of student athlete was changing drastically pre-Covid. The virus is only speeding up that change. CFB as we have known for decades will be tremendously different moving forward. And schools such as Notre Dame will probably be forced to make the decision to go along with the ride or risk losing their place in the landscape of CFB. And that, to me, is the current sad state of where we are at.

Bryant-Denny could fall into a sinkhole and it wouldn't affect football.
