Unless they do something with the 85 man limit, this is going to drastically alter the landscape of college football for the next 5 seasons. You will most likely see increased parity, and certain schools (Stanford, Northwestern, etc.) benefit in particular.

The NCAA will 100% back off the limit because the last thing they want is the football factories to get pushed around.

Huge ramifications on how to juggle an 85 man roster for the next 4 years if everyone is granted an extra year of eligibility.

I figure they give a one year exemption to the cap for those. Regardless, I think most that can go pro, will, and the transfer portal will get a lot of usage as well. The lower P5s and mid majors will be loving the influx though.

Yes, that’s what they did with the spring sports. However, the effect on a baseball roster is far less since almost every baseball player is on a partial scholarship. Far less likely for baseball players take advantage of that extra year. The effect on football will be far greater since they are full scholarships.

Yes, football teams will likely be exempt from roster limitations for one year, but years 2-5 will be chaotic. There may be a lot more kids who thought they had a spot who get kicked to the curb shortly before signing day.

I'm guessing IF schools play this fall, or spring, they won't get the extra year (unless the athlete opts out). If they don't play (talking about FB), then this year's incoming class and next year's incoming class ideally become one big class of 40ish. IMO, they could set some basic rules to help get that pig through the snake. There will still only be 24ish starting jobs, and many non-starting kids that want to play will seek out other schools. IMO, they should allow a one time transfer after soph year without sitting out a year.

IMO, one of the problems we're going to see is kids coming in next year that are less-ready than normal due to HS game disruption.

I would think they would grant extra eligibility as the high school/AAU pipeline will be disrupted. It will be difficult to evaluate incoming classes because of this. Kind of a bird in the hand philosophy

One thing I haven't seen (might have missed it) is what the NCAA will do about the scholarship limits next year. Will those that opt for an extra year count against the 85? Seems they have to allow the extra numbers otherwise some tough decisions to be made by coaches.

For spring sports, I don't believe they raised scholarship caps. Which is causing master roster crunches at many school, especially those that are being told to make cuts because of COVID's financial impact in addition to a quarter of their roster having an extra year of eligibility.

Nationwide, new cases of COVID continues to trend in the correct direction. At ND, new cases also continues to trend in the correct direction and I heard that they did not yet hit the "critical mass" of infected students that would make them cancel everything.

Cross your fingers and pray to your respective deities.

THE NCAA (for one year) did allow the roster size to go over the max limit for the upcoming season. They also increased the number of scholarship counters. So I would expect them to do something similar with football

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/2020/06/10/ncaa-division-i-baseball-roster-limits-relief/5335956002/

For the upcoming 2021 season, the 35-man roster limit has been lifted, the annual scholarship counter was raised from 27 to 32 and the 25 percent scholarship minimum was temporarily lifted.

The problem though is not a one year problem. Every player Freshman through Senior was granted an extra year of eligibility. That means roster problems for the next 4 years. Far less of a problem in baseball since many guys will choose not to come back for a 5th year because many are getting a 25% scholarship (11.7 Scholarships for 27 guys) and don't want to rack up anymore student loan debt to play ball.

The fallout for football has the potential to be far greater since these are full scholarships and almost every player would elect to come back.

Thanks for posting this. So that's specific to baseball and for one season because of the MLB draft being drastically altered, any idea for the other spring sports?

Baseball was the only spring sport that has a roster limit. All other spring sports can have as many people on the roster as they want.

All other spring sports are allowed to grant the athletes who would've been in their 4th year of eligibility the ability to return and not count against the scholarship limits. Again, that's just a 1 year kick the can down the road.

Good info. Thanks

I think some of this will take care of itself with kids leaving the team for one reason or another. I can also see the NCAA making changes down the road as things shake out. The biggest key for FB will be those kids that want the extra year to better prepare in hopes of making the NFL.

17 days away from first game and no further communication from ND ticket office. As of right now the state of indiana is still in phase 4.5 which limits large event gatherings such as sporting events and concerts.

I wonder when the admin will waive the white flag on fans in stands?

https://godeacs.com/news/2020/8/26/football-wake-forest-adds-campbell-to-2020-schedule.aspx

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest announced the addition of Big South conference member Campbell University as the Demon Deacons 2020 non-conference opponent.

The Deacs are set to host the Camels on Friday, Oct. 9 at Truist Field. This will be the first ever matchup between the two programs.

"We look forward to welcoming Coach Mike Minter and the Fighting Camels to Truist Field," Director of Athletics John Currie said. "I appreciate Campbell AD Omar Banks and our Deputy AD Lindsey Babcock for their partnership and coordination in working through this process."

The game is set to come after the first of the Demon Deacons' two bye weeks and is the only Friday game on the schedule. Campbell will also have a bye before their trip to Winston-Salem and is committed to following the ACC's COVID-19 pre-game testing and screening protocols.

Wake Forest will spend the first seven weeks of the season in the state of North Carolina, including four games at Truist Field.

Lol only two games outside of NC, that's wild

man this is crazy scheduling a new opponent just three weeks out, at least ND doesn't have to travel for this game.

the teams that are scheduling service academies at short notice are in for a world of pain. Cincy versus Army looks like an upset special from a mile away

Clemson’s seating plan for home games was approved by the state. 25% capacity. Must sit in pods of two or four. Masks. 6’spacing. They open with Citadel.

No doubt. A few years ago IU was playing Navy at home. First time eve. Local sports talk radio was talking about how it will be an easy win. IIRC IU won, but had to pull a rabbit out of their hat to get the W.

Doesn't really say how they determined who gets to go. Students and donors is all I'm seeing. Does that mean regular season ticket holders are a no go?
