I'm not so sure. Kids tend to fall in the rankings, all else equal. Say, for example, recruits 1-50 all stay static, but the kid at 51 jumps in the ratings to the top. You now have 50 "fallers" to one riser.

Nana is the only one the surprises me, along with Zeke remaining sub-250.
This logic works both ways.

Kenan Christon, Tristan Sinclair, and David Ojabo all on that list. Would be awesome if ND could even land one of those 3. I’m particularly excited about Ojabo because he’d be a great finishing touch on the DL class.

I am really surprised that we aren't in for any other prospect that is higher then Quinn Carroll.

Unless we pull some crazy flips late, it seems very unlikely we finish with a top 10 class. There are not a lot of high star guys that we are in on to close things out... not even a lot of guys even on the radar to be honest.

Yeah.

I think after this wave of Asa Turner, DJ Turner, Wormley, and the 2 DEs we like, we need to cool it. We're going to have a good season, and some teams are going to fall apart.

I'm comfortable waiting for the season and OVs to take a shot at better prospects.

I'm also 100% fine passing on Kyren Williams (although I know that won't happen).

tbh this is how recruiting is going with the new rules, Fall 2018 is really about working on the 2020 class

Also rankings could change. Malik Langham form Alabama was so far in rankings nobody heard of him. A bunch of teams offer and he picks up steam he is a top 250 guy on 247 when all is said and done. Although nothing like that happens for ND so maybe I am dreaming. Ojabo, Hamilton and Kristofic seems like they could be those guys this year.

We have no running backs or WRs committed.

We only need 1-2 of each. I'm OK going into the season that way.

Agree we’re safe to take our chances at WR, but we really need some quality bodies at RB. Our 2019 depth chart is Tony Jones and who? Sure one of the freshmen or position-switchers could be great, but no guarantees there. (This is why losing CJ Holmes really sucks.)

While I do think we slide from this 4 spot, I'm not sure we slide all the way out of the top 10. Not guaranteed but certainly possible that Kristofic, Hamilton, Wallace, Spears, and Kiser to see ratings bumps. Some maybe quite a bit. Plus, we are in on guys like Donavon Greene, Woodi Washington, Rutherford, Sheffield, Henrich, Wormley, Cornelius Johnson, and Asa Turner. Those are all composite 90's or better. Theoretically that'd keep our avg. rating above 90 and with 23 that'd put us right at the 8-12 range. For example, Miami was 8 last year with 23 players and an avg. rating of 90.99.

With all that said, I don't care if we are 8 or 11, this class is going to be pretty darn good.

Tony Jones, Jahmir Smith, C'bo Flemister, Jafar Armstrong.

And then we'll sign 1-2 this year. So could be 6, for sure 5.

I'm just really low on Kyren Williams, and don't think we should reach for him. I'd rather go into season with 0 RBs to be honest.

So I ran a class calculator and added:

1 OL - Saleem Wormley
1 LB - Asa Turner
2 WR's - TJ Sheffield and Donavon Greene
1 RB - Kyren Williams
1 DE - David Ojabo
1 CB - Woodi Washington
1 QB - Brendon Clark

That puts us at 22 commits with the potential to add 1-2 more, ISD's number was 23 recently. And our total at 22 was 256.36 with current rankings. That would've put us 15th last year. So, well outside the top 10. But I assume we see some pretty big ratings bumps for a couple of those guys mentioned and close strong. Will be interesting to follow, that's for sure.

So, one guy who has taken a single college snap to date at RB (and who, IMO, is not RB1-on-a-playoff-contender material), a couple of mid-three-stars who’ll be sophomores in 2019, and a converted WR. Maybe Bracy or Avery Davis. But even then, with the inevitable injuries/attrition/etc and it doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence. I’d take Williams and then go after all top RBs we can for the second spot. We kind of whiffed on RB last year, then (apparently) lost the guys who were supposed to be our rising starters. Can’t afford to whiff again.

I'm apparently off of my rocker because I do not think Williams' film is P5 level film, and a lot of people seem high on him. I think taking him long term will not matter because he won't be a factor at this level IMO.

So I'd rather just go into the season with 0 than add him, simply because I think we have a better chance attracting another 2019 RB with 0 RBs committed than 1.

What we don't know is how the final rankings are going to look.

Will Nana, Hamilton, Kristo finish higher than they are currently ranked, after killer senior seasons. So far the guys we have are great pick ups. really zero reaches (kiser aside to some).

I could see this group being top 5 when all is said and done

In other words, a pretty typical BK class at ND w/r/t rankings. I don't mean that in a bad way either. There are/were some clear needs for the class and so far they have nailed them other than RB. I personally like doing a rolling 2 class view and I think this class and the last offers some of the best balance we have seen from Kelly (assuming RB is addressed).

Looking over 247 rankings:

2019 - no top 50 - Carroll #92
2018 - no top 50 - 5 Top 100s, Griffith #70, Austin #82, Jurkovec #83, Simon #90, Lamb #99
2017 - no top 50, Wright #71, Kmet #82, Hainsey #84
2016 - Kraemer #26, Eichenberg #80
2015 - Wimbush #46, Mack #63, Hoge #89, Dex #94

Georgia - 2019 with 3 Top 25 and 1 more in 100
2018 with 7 Top 25 plus 5 more in 100
2017 with 2 Top 25 plus 5 more in 100
2016 with 3 Top 25 plus 2 more in 100
2015 with 1 Top 25 plus 4 more in 100

Skunkbears - 2019 - #22, #87
2018 - nada
2017 - #12, #23, #47, #57, #79, #90
2016 - #1, #39, #61, #65, #77, #87
2015 - #72

Seems like the lack of top line talent is what hamstrings our rankings as much as anything.

Michigan has a dozen Soph/Junior Top 100 that will be in their prime for our 2019/2020 series. Thankfully we get them at home first and early in the season. But they are loaded with talent from 16/17 recruiting classes ranked #8 and #5 those years - well ahead of us. Their 2015 class was pitiful so they have to play through that and their youth movement likely needs another year to fully bear fruit.

You know it's never good when Illinois has 3 players committed right no that are higher rated then our best play. Yes i know that it doesn't mean they will finish there but that's sad.

It took me 30 years to get that album out of my brain after my college roommate played it 24/7 for my sophomore year in college.

One post and now I will wake up to nightmares of that album being played in my head.

Thanks.

That's fine.

But for people not opening the link, there is also 779 ranking spots between their 2nd and 3rd best player in the class.

I would rather have a team full of players ranked 75-250 than a team stocked with 3 or 4 superstars and not much thereafter.

Exactly. To get a top ranking, you need some top 50 guys. We aren't getting those guys right now... there aren't even many plausible targets among top 50 guys at this juncture. The way the formula is set up... and I think it's set up pretty well... you absolutely have to have some headliners to finish inside the top 10.

Even if you have a 20 person class of nothing but 90-93 rating 4:s: players that's not a top 10 class... it'd be somewhere between a 250 and a 260. You need about a 270 to be inside the top 10.

There is just effectively zero traction with any top rated guys... seriously it's like Brandon Smith (PSU)? And Hudson Henry (where we didn't make top 5)? The top 50 guys that we are "in" on is basically zero... not even any pipe dreams.

Right now, best case scenario for this class is around ~15 and that will only change if a bunch of people completely off the radar change their minds in the middle of the fall.
