Anyone know what the target class size will be for 2019?

I forgot to answer this question but Notre Dame has 74 scholarship guys with eligibility in 2019 and 8 of those guys would be graduate seniors. The last two cycles ND has signed way way over the limit due to the expected attrition that comes every offseason at ND. This year ND had 102 guys signed for the 2018 season. They had 27 commits and then a whole lot of attrition...

Quenton Nelson - NFL Draft
Equanimeous St. Brown - NFL Draft
Josh Adams - NFL Draft
CJ Sanders - Transfer (SMU)
Jonathon MacCollister - Transfer (UCF)
Elijah Taylor - Transfer (EKU)
Jay Hayes - Transfer (UGA)
Nick Watkins - Transfer
Freddy Canteen - Transfer
Pete Mokwuah - Transfer
Deon McIntosh - Dismissed (E Miss CC)
CJ Holmes - Dismissed
Brandon Tiassum - Dismissed
Kevin Stepherson - Dismissed
Daniel Cage - Medical
Jimmy Byrne - Transfer/Retired?

The year before I don't have my numbers anymore but it was somewhere between 14-16 guys left ND with eligibility remaining. So, as per the last few years of Brian Kelly learning to over-sign and over-recruit positions at ND, I'd say ND will shoot for 100 guys signed between now and the 2019 season. So the idea of 18-22 commits or something small like that doesn't really seem plausible and I think it will be closer to the 25 man mark for ND. The last couple of years at ND has seen an average of around 15 guys leave ND before their eligibility was exhausted, so I think BK knows that and will plan to sign a lot accordingly.

I don't think it's that simple. I think they have a good idea on who will or won't be transfer candidates. They also know which 5th years are vital to the success of the program. As of now, I'd be shocked if they sign over 22 guys. The only disclaimer is that we may hit on some very big prospects on signing days, which the coaches would likely accept and make room for (but that'd be the exception, not the rule).

Tell me which of these players you push out for a highly rated prospect:

  • Dex
  • Bilal
  • Wimbush
  • Dew-Treadway
  • Crawford
  • Ruhland
  • Boykin
  • Finke
  • Coleman

I'd say, as of now, in order:

Dew-Treadway, Finke, Coleman, Ruhland, Bilal (if actually starter this year), Crawford, Boykin, Dex, Wimbush

But the ordering is very fluid, some of these players could rack up big minutes this year.

Now even with expected average attrition, there might be 5ish transfers and 3-5 5th years who are 'let go'. That still only puts you at 21.

Throw in a medical and you are at 22.

don't forget about 2 linebackers at ND that haven't seen the field and have been plagued w/ injuries

I could just be blanking on this, but who do you have at center next year if not Ruhland? That's why I expect him to stay the full length.

Right now you are absolutely right in the fact that ND doesn't have a lot of room, but the room always has a way of figuring itself out.

QB - one of the QB's will leave if Mertz come in. I'd guess they ask Avery Davis for permanent position change and maybe Book is tired or sitting or Wimbush does a 5th year somewhere else because he has a bad season. Some way some how, ND won't have 5 QB's on scholarship in 2019.

RB - someone will get in trouble, just playing the odds

TE - Alize Mack is either in the NFL (had a great season), gets in trouble (he has a record), or has a bad season in which maybe the staff wants to move Kmet ahead and he leaves. Also, maybe Brock Wright's transition from H-Back to TE full time doesn't go as planned. There are 6 TE's in the room this year and maybe that is too much for everyone to be happy

WR - probablty a make or break year for Javon McKinley, Chris Finke I think could get passed up by some freshman who the staff like more (I love Finke but his upside is limited).

OL - If Ruhland doesn't get his starting spot I think he can start for a bunch of FBS teams so he maybe takes a 5th somewhere else. Also, between Ruhland, Kraemer, Eichenberg, Hainsey, Banks, Gibbons, and Lugg, that's a lot of guys who've been in the program for 3 years or more and not all of them can play...

DL - If Dew-Treadway gets passed up he's out. Darnell Ewell will hopefully have made his move by 2019 but if not, he could look for greener pastures. Between Hayes, Okwara, Kareem, Jamir Jones, and Ogundeji that's a lot of 4th year dudes for two spots with a ton of talent coming in behind them. Somebody could get upset with playing time.

LB - David Adams & Drew White hopefully will develop and figure out their injuries to become players. I'd put them as transfer candidates if the vaunted freshman class overtakes them. If Bilal is good then he'll stay, if he loses his spot then he could do a 5th year somewhere else.

DB - Donte Vaughn, Devin Studstill, Jalen Elliott (if he gets passed up), and Nick Coleman (if he gets passed up) could all be departures with how their positions are shaping up. ND will probably follow up a 7 man DB class with a 4 man DB class and that's going to inevitably lead to some attrition.

Obviously, this is not a projection of what I want to happen. I hope a guy like David Adams recovers and becomes the 4 star LBer that we'd love to see at ND, but I'm also pointing out with these position groups that ND has put a lot of pressure on these kids to perform and if they don't then they'll be looking for a new school.

If you're referring to Dexter Williams, he's out of eligibility after the 2018 season anyway so he shouldn't be counted towards 2019.

Nonsense, he'll have a 5th year available after he's suspended for the entire 2018 season.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm accounting for 5 transfers already and 5 - 5th years going elsewhere. Certainly, we could lose 8+ if we expect to lose 1-3 secondary 1-2 LBs, 1-2 DL, 1 QB and potentially 1-2 WR but that's pure hyperbole and teh only rumblings I've heard is regarding teh two LBs with injury history.

I hope for all of our players to break thru, contribute, lead us to championships and I also hope we don't carry dead weight on our roster and hope that players who want to play college ball get an opportunity to do it even if it's not at ND.

I find it's best to not worry about these things right now. We'll likely have 1-2+ more transfers before fall camp starts and the rest will work itself out in the intervening 15 months before we need to be at 85 next fall. :)

https://www.rockytopinsider.com/2018/06/08/tennessee-offer-took-me-by-surprise-for-four-star-athlete/

I’ve gone to three camps so far, and every camp I’ve been to I’ve run a 4.38 (40-yard dash time) or lower,” Payoute told me over the phone. “Every coach at the camps have just been mind blown at that and my broad jump. They were just surprised at that with my size and my ability.”

Does Austin Jones not have his own page? I couldn't find anything to put this top ten into, but glad that ND made it

Maybe I am asleep at the wheel here, but a 2019 RB Derrian Brown just put ND in his Top 10 on the twitter.

I didn't know we had offered him. I looked for a profile and didn't see one, but I looked quickly. Anyone?

Brown was offered last year. Never been much action so he didn't get one.

Austin Jones never got either. I would have done one but i don't believe in his recruitment.

How so? I don't think anyone had any confidence he would visit anyway. This was expected.

Well considering how highly he had spoken about ND, how the entire staff followed him on twitter lol, how hard the staff was apparently recruiting him, and how he mentioned ND in most interviews when mentioning his suitors, and how ND has been recruiting him for over a year, I’d say I held out a little hope that they could get this kid on campus for a fall OV. But sometimes the best or second best education in power 5 football, a borderline heisman candidate at RB now on the Eagles, and an offensive line with as much or more talent than any team in the country is not enough to beat out Cal or Utah for a kid’s top 5. All’s well that ends well.

Updated Rivals250 rankings: https://n.rivals.com/prospect_rankings/rivals250/2019

Of interest to us:
Quinn Carroll: down five spots
John Olmstead: down three spots
Litchfield Ajavon: down six spots
Nana: down 12 spots

Graham Mertz: up 162 spots
Jowon Briggs: up 50 spots
Osita Ekwonu: down 33 spots

This one is the most surprising to me. All he's done in between rankings is win the DL MVP at a regional opening. How are you going to drop a kid who has yet to be beat?

Same shit different year.

I'm not so sure. Kids tend to fall in the rankings, all else equal. Say, for example, recruits 1-50 all stay static, but the kid at 51 jumps in the ratings to the top. You now have 50 "fallers" to one riser.

Nana is the only one the surprises me, along with Zeke remaining sub-250.

Tommy Eichenberg made the top 250, slightly behind Nana.

Must admit, I am losing all sorts of faith in these rankings.
