The epitome of BVG's scheme was Jaylon and Tranquill running across the set and into each other. Classic I have no fucking idea what I'm doing

...maybe not totally true...but funny as hell. That was a critical snap...and that image is indelible.

The Defensive front was generally good, the corners and safeties embarrassed themselves in coverage...hope they have a little come to Jesus this week. That quarterback was not good, his throws were generally something high school kids would pick off, and he looks like an AA today.

What is up with our corners? I was under the impression that they were possibly the best unit on the team. Really disappointed in what I've seen from Luke and KVR.

vs Texas
at Virginia

vs Georgia Tech
vs UMASS
at Clemson
vs Navy
vs Southern Cal
at Temple
at Pittsburgh
vs Wake Forest
vs Boston College
at Stanford

I don't think there is any reason to drop those games. So I see nine wins on that alone. If they can steal a victory from one of the three ranked teams in the next five games, I'll be content.

I generally agree...my one caveat...Temple does not appear to be the normal Temple this year. That run at Pitt then at Temple AFTER southern Cal. That is going to be telling.

Is BVG's defense too complicated for college ?

I don't think so. If is worked while he was at Georgia it should not be to complicated for ND. I would think that the ND players are significantly more intelligent the those who attend Georgia. More likely the players at ND are just not as talented as we are led to believe. Look not disrespect to Schmidt or Tranquil, but these two kids play significant minutes and they are not that talented; yet since we do not see what the coaches see during practice, both are obviously the best options at their position, which may be an indication that the talent level is just not there.

Also, as far as we know BVG does not coach the secondary. That is Todd Lyght's job. If they are not doing the job then Lyght either needs to teach then better or recommend making changes as to who plays.

On the other hand it was only the second game of the season. Let's see what happens this weekend. Hopefully we will be surprised and they will play well.

That's about the most significant point in the last few pages. Making decisions based two games (actually, only 1 game) is a rather small sample size.

1. I don't trust Yoon. Period. There's no doubt he has potential, but thank god he didn't have to attempt a game winning field goal.

2. Speaking of that, if the last play hadn't gone so well, everyone would be screaming about the second to last offensive play we ran yesterday. A bubble screen off a time-out that eats 20 seconds of clock for a 2 yard gain? Painful.

3. Finally, I'm surprised that nobody pointed out that Malik was walking away from BK all day and that Kizer ran down the field and celebrated after his game-winning TD pass. Based on about 10 seconds of TV, I thought most of you had the expertise to proclaim that Kizer has champion-caliber body language.

It only took 20 seconds off the clock because we had an injury and had to sub. Smythe hobbled off the field and then we had to run someone on. It wasn't a bad play call at all... very good chance of getting us into field goal range and/or being able to get out of bounds... just didn't work.

I have an unreasonable amount of trust in Yoon. I love that he's had some growing pains in games that we've won. Some serious green-tinted glasses for me with this kid.

Kids kicking right out of HS probably don't have that much experience kicking from that tight angle like the one he missed. I'm not ready to give up on him just yet.

Yep, Smythe (and anyone else) needs to learn to go down on the field next time.

I was at the game. The most disheartening thing for me was that their QB threw up a lot of ducks that took forever to get to the WR...and they still were easily completed! Thank goodness they had a Johns and not a Kessler at QB or it would have been a lot uglier.

That being said, I was generally pleased with the D's performance through the first 3 quarters. Their 2 2nd quarter TD's came on a busted coverage flea flicker and after a completion on Rochelle's batted pass that somehow made its way through 4 defenders. Sh*t happens. If that Rochelle swat drops to the ground (I believe it was 3rd & 6), we get the ball back up 12-0.

As far as the 4th quarter D, I can't tell you what went wrong. It was painful to watch.

Other observations:
- Too bad Sanders couldn't keep his feet...he was gonezo.
- Most under-rated play of the game: Newsome's monster punt that pinned UVA back and quelled their momentum.
- 3rd/4th & Short: Line up under center and pound it down their throats behind your NFL-caliber OL. Is it that hard?
- Other teams have prepped well for our screens. Time to pump and go a la Stovall/Weis vs. BYU (2006?).
- Watched replay of the game last night and my DVR (which I had extended 1/2 hour) cut off EXACTLY before Fuller's TD! Really?

Check your parental controls. Probably cut out because that was dirty and not suitable for children.

Correct me if I'm wrong because this is more of a hunch than anything, but wouldn't that have forced us to burn our final timeout?

Even if things go really badly, they are still sitting at 2-0... you have to think 6 wins if the absolute floor... I'm still trying to wrap my head around some 'experts' now calling for ND to just make a bowl game... I was at about 8-9 wins to start the season... maybe I'm at 7-8 now, but I need to see Kizer over the next two weeks first, and they need to stay relatively healthy from here on out. If Kizer can do well enough and the D front can stay together, I think I'm still at 8-9 wins.

Solid play by play analysis by Bill Reagan on ISD. Really concerning how many bad comments were made about Schimdt and the fact that we have a triple option team coming in next week....
Virginia Play by Play Analysis - Irish Sports Daily

Shouldn't Schmidt be good for GT and Navy? Wouldn't he be most likely to be disciplined enough to stay where he needs to be? Isn't that usually the key against option?

Here are my post game observations:
1) Thoughts & prayers to Malik.
2) BVG can go, besides Jaylon Smith, our defense sucked.
3) 0-10 on 3rd down conversions is unacceptable.
4) TE U??
5) CJ Saunders is dangerous in the open field, why is he only doing punt returns?
6) Corey Robinson??
7) UVA played a heck of a game.
8) Fuller and Prosise played lights out.
9) I got the feeling that the team wasn't fully prepared for UVA or took this game for granted.
10) Get Wimbush ready and burn a red shirt if needed. I am not saying that I don't believe in Kizer, but Wimbush needs to be ready if called on.

Lastly this team is a close group of "brothers" as they say in articles. Did anyone see KeiVarae Russell pumping up Yoon on the sideline. Kizer was also pumping up his O-line before the last possession. Per SB Tribune Jaylon telling Kizer how he believes in him. This team is not only playing for the University or the fans, they are playing for each other. I like this team's attitude and while Malik going down hurts there is a lot of season left. If Ohio St. can do it last year why can't ND do it this year?

Because our players come to play school.

And also because a monkey could run Meyer's system. In the very recent past he has made Tebow look like a football god, made Braxton Miller look like a decent passer, made JT Barrett a serviceable option QB, and made Cardale Jones look like he wasn't a total moron. The guy can coach and knows how to win, but those QBs will be out of the NFL before their first season starts and won't have a good education to fall back on (aside from Tebow, that guy has a future in whatever he wants). If you think Cardale Jones could run Kelly's system you're fooling yourself. That's why I love ND.

Im just saying its concerning when I read he is getting blown off the ball, step too slow, missing tackles. Guess it can be said for anybody but it just stood out more because he was mentioned the most.

I do like the analysis on the two inside zone runs on third and short and fourth and short. Pretty much giving the defense what they want in that situation

You love ND because our coach is running overly complicated systems? If all it takes is a simple to learn system then give me Meyer all day.

All Kizer has to do is not lose games for us. ND has plenty of talent to run the table as long as we don't turn the ball over and let the playmakers like Fuller and Prosise make plays. Our offensive line will enable the running game to click and will open up play action passes for Kizer. We have not even seen guys like Alize or ESJ settle in and begin to make plays yet. I'm a little confused as to why guys like Hayes and Morgan have seen so little action so far, because I think they bring some upside to the defense that could pay off down the road. Depth, which has been a big problem since Lou left, are not as big a concern anymore. We have talent two or three deep at most positions that can play with anyone in the country. I will be disappointed if we do not win 10 to 12 games this year, and I remain optimistic about our chances of making the playoffs. Malik was a big loss not because he was going to put up 400 yeards passing a game, but because he gave us another credible threat running out of the backfield. Kizer will do just fine standing and delivering strikes to a deep receiving corps and handing the ball to CJ and the freshmen.

When i saw that i kept thinking kickers are head cases and him doing that is probably gonna screw him up. Glad we didn't have to find out.

+1

I know back when I tended goal the last thing I wanted was to get a pep talk from one of the forwards. Big job, got it, let me focus.
