I think Michigan wins. I don't think we'll get embarrassed, but I think they'll win comfortably. Probably by 10 points.

And this is the "most athletic", "deepest", "best defense" BK has ever had. And IMO we'll start out 0-1 against a team we joke about and laugh at their 8-5 record last year.

If we win I'll gladly be the board idiot, but I think joke's on us considering how many of members on here discount Michigan's talent and amplify ours.

B/C the offense clearly needed 300 passing yards that day.....good grief that is a lame point. If memory serves, he had something like 5 passes in the second half after ND was up by 3 TD's at half. He controlled the game, which is the point.

I agree with you, there are concerns with how he finished the year, injury or otherwise. But don't try and cherry pick (misleading) stats to try and window dress an argument

He's a great runner, no denying that.

But I think people remember the total package of the "big games" and think he actually showed up as a passer in them, too.

Even in the games people point to to show he played great, it was because of his legs. He hasn't had a "great passing game" against a "good team", ever.

MSU was good, but it was still only 176 yards passing.

But, again, that’s the point of why his rushing stats need to be included. Because of the impact his legs can have on a game, he doesn’t need to be Baker Mayfield throwing the ball. He has to be better no doubt about that, but his comp % (as an example) doesn’t need to be like Patterson’s, for him to a better option. And when you factor in his legs. Patterson hasnt led an offense to the type of numbers Wimbush did against comparable competition. Now maybe he will, but he doesn’t have the resume yet.

My original point is that he doesn’t NEED to have a great passing game to be a better option than Patterson, because he makes so many significant plays (and opens so many other things up) with his legs.

Patterson is clearly a better pure passer, but that’s qualified by the fact that he hasn’t done it against a good defense, with the possible exception of his game against Auburn, and even in that game he turned the ball over 4 time.

Wimbush is clearly a better runner, but it’s qualified by a low completion percentage.

It’s nearly a wash, but I give the edge to Brandon because he used his running ability to win big games. Patterson hasn’t done that, despite being a better passer.

His goal isn't to be a great passer. His goal is to be a great QB. If going 55% and throwing for 200 yards and running for 50 more keeps the D honest and allows for 4 YPC+ for the RB's, he did his job.

BTW, I think we all can agree that ND is most successful when the QB is not asked to shoulder the load. Expecting "great" passing stats while being both a DT and game manager is not fair.

I don't think any non-bias person would take Wimbush over Patterson. I'd take Patterson. Wimbush can run, and that has to be included, but so can Patterson. Not as well, but he can keep you honest at the very least. And he's a better runner than Wimbush is passer, if that makes any sense. Against good teams, Wimbush has been underwhelming as a passer.

Vs. MSU, Wimbush was 14/20 for 176 yards passing (90 QBR).

Vs. USC he was 9/19 for 120 yards passing (88 QBR).

Vs. NC State he was 10/19 for 104 yards passing (86 QBR).

Wait... You know that QBR is out of 100 right? So those three games, he was at least in the 86th percentile right?

Tommy, random question, how many guys on this Notre Dame team do you think would start for Bama? I'm having a hard time thinking of a single one... maybe TE? Maybe some of our OL?

Coney, Bars, and Love would be my picks. Mustipher could start as well IMO but maybe would need to slide down one on the line. Yoon wins the kicking duties. TE is a push... I like Alize as a blocking TE but would take our catching TE's. I think Tillery would see valuable time and could push for a starting spot. Past that, I think Bama's position groupings are a bit better.

Wait... You know that QBR is out of 100 right? So those three games, he was at least in the 86th percentile right?

Doesn't help given Patterson's best three QBR games were:

South Alabama (QBR 91.0) v. @ Michigan State (90.8)

Vanderbilt (QBR 87.1) v. USC (88.8)

UT Martin (QBR 86.2) v. NC State (86.2)

So, in total, Wimbush's three best games from a raw QBR perspective were better than Patterson, even when facing VASTLY better competition.

Also have to bear in mind that Patterson had better talent to throw to than Wimbush. Talent he doesn't have now.

You might very well be right in your prediction, but to over-generalize about the board’s thoughts on Michigan might be unwise.

I mean, for most who are experienced Notre Dame fans, anxiety based on a fear of team apathy and complacency has threatened to bury us all prematurely with heart disease. If you aren’t humbled by being a Notre Dame fan, you might be the type that likes to watch football for the colorful jerseys.

Michigan sucks for a myriad of reasons, but not because of an 8-5 record or their talent. It’s pretty clear to the majority that their squad is trending upward and should improve this season.

With that said, Notre Dame will win. That’s not arrogance. That’s just confidence and belief.

Soooo... the outsider's perspective here. Michigan's defense gets all the press but when you compare their defense against ND's defense against ranked opponents last year, the Irish fair very well. ND was much better against the run and a bit worse against the pass. ND on offense was better across most measureables. While I think Michigan has a good - not great - defense I think they made most of their living on lesser opponents. All things equal I think this year's Irish defense is just as good as Michigan and the Irish offense is better. Throw in Patterson being asked to play against his tendencies, being on the road, opening weekend, in what should be a hostile environment and I think Michigan struggles. The Irish win a close one at home.

It sounds sensible to me. That is how they should have played the QBs against Georgia last year (though I guess they had not realised BWs issues throwing by that stage).

Vegas has the game as basically a pick em. So any outcome can reasonably occur. It definitely isn’t clearly one team or the other.

In a game where the defenses will probably be better than the offenses. Yoon & Newsome are probably gonna be big factors in this game.

I don’t know Bama roster at all. But I would think Tillery, Kareem, Coney and Love would start. Same with Bars and Mustipher.

I love Kareem, but wasn’t he committed to Bama until they cooled on him? And I thought Coney, but Bama backers are just so good.

Thought that was the case with Kareem. My prediction is halfway through the season people will be saying Kareem would start at Bama.

Realistic choices, or are we talking pie in the sky? I'll be honest, I haven't paid much attention to football, this year. I'll give it a shot, though.

Top two:

1. John Harbaugh - I think he would bring the right amount of gravitas and maturity.

2. Dino Babers - I realize he hasn't been bang-up at Syracuse, but I like what his lower-tier teams have accomplished. I also have to cheer for a Hawaii guy.
