Many past teams would have folded in a physical game like this. When you are playing larger more athletic kids and allowed to play that physical for the entire length of the court you are in for a long night. We fought through it and stayed in the game, still pushing into the paint instead of chucking up threes all over the place. Actually thought we should have pushed for more open jump shots/threes since we weren't getting any calls in the paint.

And as mentioned above, the goaltending no-call was almost as embarrassing as the announcers gushing over the "block" - wtf.

The bolded is a great point that I kept thinking last night. If we were going to win that game, it was going to be by consistently driving the lane and drawing fouls/getting the kick out shot when the D collapsed. We needed more free throws and the guards did what they were supposed to do. A few calls go their way and this is a different game.

Also, VJ had the quietest 14 points I've ever seen. He needs to be more of a playmaker to take some heat off Matty F. Time to take the Huggies off son.

Depending on our first round draw in the Tourney, this team could repeat to the Elite 8 or get bounced in the first round by an athletic team like Florida State.

Honestly, there is no reason this team should be playing at this level.

I'll say it again: Just for Men, Touch of BREY!

Sure there is. Maybe they are just better than what everyone's preseason expectations? They have beaten a handful of tournament caliber teams and they are a few missed free throws away from being 6-0 in the ACC.

Its time to just realize that Brey is incredible and developing and coaching his players. Matt Farrell is probably the most improved player in the country and, besides Colson, has been our most consistent player. That doesn't just happen on accident.

I know I rag on this team quite a bit (usually just for not being able to rebound in crucial situations), but I can't complain too much because they are just as good as any other team in the ACC right now.

If they can beat Syracuse on Saturday, I think they will stay around #15.

That was about as impressive as you can be in a loss, when you factor in the recent schedule and the situation... three straight road games against solid opponents that are great at home, and you come away 2-1 in those games, the loss being to a team that somehow shot the ball better than you did, eve when you made 15 from beyond the arc?

That's a pretty impressive for 3 away games in 7 days, two of those in tough gyms against tough teams.

I just don't think he has that in him. I just do not see him being the aggressor like a Grant or DJax. Just his demeanor. Remember the comments during the Lville game by Brey that he doesn't need VJ scoring 18 a night, just 10-15 games of it.

The loss should not impact us considering we kept it close against a top 10 team on the road. We really need to beat Syracuse though.

There is no team I hate more in college basketball than Syracuse. They have caused problems for both ND and Cincy on many occasions, often times through pure luck and the power of douchebagness.

Him and Devendouche I mean Devendorf.

When that douchebag jumped up onto the table and started pounding his chest after he *thought* he hit a game-winner in the 6 OT game against UConn, rather than celebrating with his teammates, I realized just how douchey Syracuse was as an institution.

Devendorf always reminded me of guy who bought a lot of Pall Mall cigarettes and scratch offs at the gas station.

I was there. I've got some very (special to me) crappy 110 photos of my pre-Larry Bird hero, Pete Trgovich and some other guys that played there that day. lol

That place was NUTS. It was just 3 weeks after ND beat Bama for the '73 title too. Can you imagine being a student then???

* I think Irish#1 was or he graduated in '73 maybe.

I was there too. 5 years old, I remember being miserable, it was the loudest I have ever heard it in any arena. Did not understand the moment. Sad.

Pete was on those stud East Chicago Washington teams IIRC.

Not a grad. I always played too much in HS. When it was time to look at college, ND wouldn't give me a sniff. lol

I remember that football and basketball season very well. I cleaned up on the bets. By the time the basketball season ended, I couldn't get anyone to bet with me again. lol

Of course the rematch at Pauley wasn't very pretty.

I was looking at the box score of the FSU game and they played 13 different players. That's nuts. That's another reason they are such a horrible matchup for anyone. They remain fresh all game.

Yep. Trgovich Jurnior Bridgeman and longtime MLB pitcher, Tim Stoddard. Denny Crum recruited all of them to UCLA but he got the Louisville job when they graduated. Coach Wooden got Trgovich and Coach Crum got Bridgeman. Stoddard chose to go play for Anderson's very own Norm Sloan at NC State with a guy from your era, Monte Towe of Converse, IN (Who could forget a basketball player from Converse?). They both started with Burrelson and Thompson on the National Championship team in '74.

'73-'74 was the start of my basketball career. Remember it like it was yesterday.

Listened to the NBCsports podcast today. Jeff Goodman of ESPN has us as the 4th ranked point guard situation in the country.

I wonder what odds you would have gotten on that to start the season.

He's not very good but I am happy about this. We need big man depth and he is a serviceable defender.

Have to disagree with the "not very good" part. He makes the whole team better, infusing toughness and not afraid to use his five fouls as quickly as possible. A physically mature 22 year old banging in the post for 10-15 minutes who has been through two elite eights plus whatever we do this year is an absolute asset. No future pro but a solid college player who makes those around him better day in and day out classifies as "good" in my book. Then again, I remember Marcus Young shooting underhand free throws and Matt Gotsch trying to break 160 pounds for four years so maybe my standards are a bit less than your elite or sucks evaluation metrics.

Most of us would assume Gibbs took over point for that to happen. Farrell is such a pleasant surprise - and glad Gibbs isn't getting pinched out as a result.

VJ looks a lot more energized on both ends so far. Back to back powerful dunks, the second off a nifty behind the back pass from Farrell. Irish up 20-14.

Agree with this. Sucks we let them score the last 5 points of the half in less than a minute.

He hasn't really been given a chance to get in any kind of a rhythm. Tough to do when you are only playing 1 minute segments at a time. I think he's got to improve quite a bit defensively before he'll see extended time against ACC teams.

Austin Torres has been really good lately in his role. Love that end to end hustle there to break up the oop attempt in transition.

Beachem up to 22 now, which matches his career high, with a little under 15 minutes left.
