Ok, as I said, without knowledge of medicals or transfers, if this is the list you are working with you are you not accepting 5th year applications from? Baratti isn't on the list as. Huermann isn't on the list. Grace absolutely would be a candidate. I agree Martin has a lot of value but the choices here aren't good if this is the list they have to choose from.

I love Amir Carlisle, but they'd let go of Amir before Martin. Same for Farley. Martin is pretty much untouchable at this point.

Having said that, I don't think anyone from that list will have to bounce, when it all shakes out...

I just think it is awesome we should finally have 85 scholarship players come opening game.

I think we said the same thing last year. It's never a guarantee.

Wait so Hounshell is already gone? Isn't he running as the third TE right now?

My auto correct is a bitch

Auto correct is a "bitch," and a "dumb blonde bitch" at that. Spell check is a good thing. Proof read. Revise words with little red dots under them if need be – programs can make mistakes, especially when a data base is not quite complete, accurate or correct

Carry on.

No, people just jumping to the conclusion that he will get cut (which he probably will if it comes to that)

In other news, I'm just now watching the presser and for a while I was super confused. I kept mishearing the clip where Kelly is confirming the 5th year applications (at the 15:00 mark for those interested). They ask about Carlisle, but someone says Grace at the same time and it sounds like they say "Calabrese?" Then Kelly answers "Carlisle, yes" but it sounds SO much like he says "Carlo, yes." That threw me for a loop. I was googling Carlo and looking at his UND.com bio thinking "he played four years.. the last one as a grad student... in 2013! Where does the eligibility come from?!"

Don't worry everyone, Carlo Calabrese isn't coming back to put an even tighter bind on the 85 scholly roster.

What about Deeb? He has to be a transfer possibility.

John Turner?
Maybe one of the second/third string OLs like Montelus or Bivin?
A tweener like Randolph?

I dunno. But I think between transfers, injuries and the inevitable flunkout/kickout you never see coming (I mean, Will Mahone?), we'll be just fine with 85 and sure as shit Nick Martin is suiting up against Texas.

His people will find another year of eligibility for him, they'll make the NCAA an offer they can't refuse.

I think that Kelly has shown a prejudice for all of his fifth years, this time around. Equally, I think there are some buried on the depth chart, or with recurring injuries that are more likely to provide room for this class of fifth years.

I don't think that there is any way with the spring all of the fifth years turned in, that any of them would be gone.

I think Kelly has a new level of respect for Chase, but he is the only fifth year with any chance of missing the cut. Remember, part of the equation is based on the academic side. What kind of Masters candidates are these players?

Would it be COMPLETELY out of line for the staff to ask Schmidt to pay his own way again to make room for an extra 5th year?

No way if he's a grad student, number 86, and not back at 100%. All walkons that get scholarships are supposed to be one year deals.

Watch out, Lax, they may burn you at the stake for this one

I made the same hypothetical statement a few months ago when we first realized after signing day that we may be over by a few scholarships. Kelly mentioned that Walk-On scholarships were on a one year basis and I pondered if Schmidt's might not be renewed if we were in such a situation. Those kinds words are treasonous around here apparently.

Idk what ya'll are debating about.

Even sitting at 88 right now and trying to figure out who goes... I bet we go into the Texas game with less than 85

yeah i'd wager the staff does not actually have to do any "cuts", they will be done for them by transfers and whatnot

I think a few people said Schmidt would be gone but I can't see him being removed from our roster without injury complications. Maybe I'm wrong but he was the lynchpin of defense last year (as evidenced by the stats).

I'll trust Kelly, I'm just happy that we have this "problem". We used to have low 80s, high 70s going into camp. This kind of depth is absolutely critical.

Now if we can just get our DEs and Safety depth in line with the other positions, then I'll be a very happy man. I honestly can't remember seeing our roster so balanced and loaded (Granted, I didn't really watch ND until Willingham/Davie/Weis era).

Brian Kelly on Irish’s QBs: ‘I’d take our two over Ohio State’s’ | CollegeFootballTalk

I don't know about you, but that comment section just shows how pretentious, insecure and just flat out idiotic a lot of O$U fans are. I mean, WOW. I know what Kelly said was outlandish from an ignorant perspective (not used as an insult, but from general lack of knowledge on the QB situation), but the petty hostility from these yahoos is just flat out ridiculous, it's actually borderline hilarious. I also like that practically every single well thought out opinion defending Kelly's remarks has about 100 thumbs down and like 10 thumbs up, while *Insert ND is irrelevant here* gets general praise. Makes me hate that school even more now. I can't believe this, but I may actually hate them MORE than scUM...ugh, I feel unclean.

Moved to the off-topic thread for convenience sake.

I guess you gotta ask...what would you expect Brian Kelly to say about the two guys he has groomed? ND is stacked, and the one area that needs a vote of confidence from the coach is QB. Not exactly a Joe Namath "guarantee" but it is all at once an endorsement and a challenge...something Urban Meyer himself would smile and nod to...It is obvious tOSU's guys did enough to win, so whats to be defensive about? If you are classy tOSU, you say "hope to get the chance to prove ya wrong Brian Kelly", then you rub the smudge from your 2014 ring, and move on.

NBCSports' Keith Arnold just published an article titled "With roster still in flux, Kelly plans on being at 85 by Texas":

For the first time in over a decade, Notre Dame has a roster crunch.

As Notre Dame’s fifth-year candidates submit their applications to the university, Brian Kelly plans on moving forward and using every minute he has to figure out his roster.

“You have to be at 85 when you kick off,” Kelly said of his maximum-capacity roster. “We’ll be at 85 when we kick off.”

That’s a far cry from the team’s of recent memory, when coaching transitions, recruiting washouts and roster holes left many Notre Dame football teams involuntarily working with far less than a full allotment of 85 scholarship players. (By rough count, Notre Dame’s 2007 squad—where Tyrone Willingham’s recruiting woes had officially caught up to Charlie Weis—had just 74 scholarship players.)

But after seasons of coming close, it appears that the Irish will have a full 85-man roster come the Texas game. And how they get there remains to be seen.

Kelly confirmed that all seven fifth-year players—Nick Martin, Joe Schmidt, Amir Carlisle, Chase Hounshell, Jarrett Grace, Everett Golson and Matthias Farley—have submitted their paperwork to return. Who ends up back with the Irish in 2015? We’re not quite there yet.

“They’ve all turned them in. They were due last Friday and they were all turned in. We should have an answer on whether they’ve been granted a fifth year,” Kelly said.

There are givens: Martin, Schmidt, Farley and Carlisle all are in the staff’s plans for 2015. It appears that Grace is as well, a miraculous return from injury all but complete. Add to that graduate transfer Avery Sebastian, the Cal safety has signed a letter-of-intent and will play out his eligibility at Notre Dame.

Golson, the team’s most important fifth-year player, looks to be returning as well, though Kelly acknowledged that he isn’t 100 percent certain what the quarterback will be doing until he’s enrolled in summer school. Even Hounshell, working as a reserve tight end after spending four seasons as a defensive lineman, is doing his best to earn a spot as a blocker.

As Kelly discussed the situation, it didn’t sound like a man facing difficult decisions. And after poking around with some contacts in the program, it’s certainly on the radar, though hardly the concern that it is amongst the hard-core fanbase.

That’s because Notre Dame’s head coach is well in control of his roster. And he has been doing his job long enough to understand that every year, unplanned attrition hits.

Tim O’Malley of Irish Illustrated did the digging, but in every season since 1980, the Irish have had a football player transfer out of the program. (A media guide change made any additional searching too difficult to continue.) So while we’re not sure who it could be, 35-plus years of data points to Kelly and the Irish being just fine.

Speculating on transfers isn’t easy. Nor is it habit to put into print baseless speculation. But potential transfers could include younger players buried on the depth chart. Or veterans in a similar situation. It’s not hard to see who those players are, and it’s likely they’re the ones doing their due diligence this spring, ready to make a move when classes end.

We already know that KeiVarae Russell is set to return this June. Ishaq Williams‘ return isn’t as clear, though Kelly said he’ll have a conversation with Williams after spring practice ends as he looks for clarity inside the program and Williams needs to be readmitted to the university. In all likelihood, Williams is on the bubble.

One thing may be changing inside Notre Dame’s program. After keeping certain malcontents on the roster and allowing them to stay through graduation, there’s reason to suspect that the tightened numbers have Kelly and his staff reconsidering that policy.

While we’ve seen the ugly side of oversigning—just look at what’s going on at Ohio State as Urban Meyer tries to shed scholarships before next season and what’s gone on in the SEC the past decade. But as Kelly gets his roster capable of competing with the elite in college football, he takes an NFL approach to the process.

“It’s a salary cap. You’ve got to get to your salary cap,” Kelly said. “We’ll get to 85.”
