I would play with no restrictions (except for the guys that are medically limited).

The best way to simulate game situations is to play the game.

How can you improve on aspects of the game (such as option play) if the QB doesn't have to worry about getting laid out if holds on the ball to long?

Over-precaution can lead to underproduction.

I guess I live by an old school mentality, but I for ONE practice, would let me guys play all out.
Easily the best way to get the best feedback for QBs when they have to worry about sacks.

im not putting much stock in who is where on the depth chart in April. we always put seniors or those who understood at front in spring. if larkin is more cerebral it will lead to less wasted reps, which is really important with new defensive scheme getting installed.

and it can only be a positive for the program if walk ons are developing well enough to be trusted on Saturdays.

There is no way BK is going to let Golson and Zaire be live targets. I would think that the 3rd string quarterback will be a live target and Kizer would be too if he was an EE. BK would look real stupid if Golson or Zaire got hurt during the spring game because the defense was allowed to tackle them.

Why the hell do we need to simulate a game in the spring?

I would suggest that the BG game isn't meant to simulate gameday. I think it's meant to be a chance for kids to separate themselves from their depth chart competition, show the coaches what it looks like for certain groups to be on the field, and give kids a small taste of what playing in the stadium feels like.

Can you imagine the shit that BK would get if he unleashed everyone 100% and got Golson hurt? His house would have to be placed under guard.

I didn't realize Joe Schmidt was the MVP of his Mater Dei high school, and his teammates were Max Wittek and Victor Blackwell. That's impressive. They went to 3 straight playoffs. He was a captain too. The kid is definitely a leader and earned his spot in the middle of the defense. The test will be if he can hold onto the spot.

I know I'm a homer, and drink way too much....I was talking about the kool aid, but I'm kinda excited about BVG and the new defense. I think we have the personnel to field it very well, and will surprise some people.

I'm a little skeptical that we'll be able to bring pressure consistently. We haven't been able to bring pressure when it was needed for awhile, at least not regularly. Yeah, Diaco's system wasn't really built for that, it was bend don't break. Still, I wonder if our guys will be aggressive enough to make it work. It'll also call for a lot of man defense, which shouldn't be any problem for Russell, but we may give up some big plays on the other side with Riggs/Luke.

What if Golson gets injured during a non-contact situation?

Will people then call for Kelly to not ever play a starting QB during the spring game?
Should we just ask for our QBs not to practice in general?

I wouldn't want our QBs to get hurt during footwork drills...

A contact injury is something that BK can avoid though. If Golson got hurt in a non-contact situation then that is just really bad luck.

Having a quarterback out for the season because he took a shot from a linebacker that plays on the same team in a practice game sounds very silly

Small tidbit of yesterday's practice. Coach Hiestand REALLY getting after Mcglinchey...Hanratty looks like he'd be a bitch at Nose.

Couple unfamiliar players in this video: 97 and 85

small clip of #52 Larkin wrapping the edge in a turnover drill...kid plays with a motor and if his measurables are true it wouldn't surprise me if he's able to play for us

Signing day is in February but players can transfer in the spring/summer. Given that transfers are almost inevitable, is it likely that we'll ever have 85 scholarship players without over signing? Is there another way around this?

Inability to think in gradations can plague the best of us. Don't let it happen to you. Call 1-800-BAD-LOGIC and request a free sample of our cure all remedy.

Seriously, you can't believe what you posted. Someone getting injured, like Lombard falling and hurting his wrist is an accident. Putting your QBs into 'live' situations increases the probability of injury by a large margin and would result in most fans questioning Kelly's decision making.

I understand and respect what all of you that have concern about the defensive front have to say. But there are signs. I liken it to the late spring we are having here. Here is what Keith Arnold has to say :

2:27 — Romeo Okwara drops the BOOM! on Hunter Bivin (70). It’s still really weird seeing anybody else wearing Zack Martin’s number, especially in a collision like that.

That’s an impressive rep by Okwara.

2:31 — That’s the Playstation 3 version of Greg Bryant. Wait, that’s the REAL version of Greg Bryant. Great cut and ability to accelerate and get up field. That one looked like it could’ve gone the distance.

2:34 — He might not have all the size in the world, but Justin Utupo (53) is a disruptive player. He might be able to do some damage on the interior of the defensive line, especially taking limited snaps.

2:37 — That’s a lot of power on display by Jarron Jones, pushing Mark Harrell back into the imaginary quarterback.

2:40 — Isaac Rochell (90) gets underneath John Montelus (60) and pushes the big guard backwards. That’s a solid rep by Rochell, who could play a lot of football this season.

. . .

2:50 — One of our first looks at Andrew Trumbetti (98), going up against starting left tackle Ronnie Stanley. Not bad, kid.

And Keith actually missed a pretty good rep by Matuska. (His 89 versus Trumbetti's 98.)

Aside from giving schollies to walk-ons, which we do, not really. But how many programs actually carry 85 scholarship players into the season? Is 83 so bad?
I agree we don't want to be run down in the 70s before the games even start, but I don't really think being one or two under is a big deal.

When did I say I ever believe that logic?

Clearly the ellipsis was signifying sarcasm.
It was to show how some people's rationality is another person's irrationality.

And to the previous poster.. "Kelly can avoid contact injuries..."

Couldn't he avoid noncontact too?
I mean, if he let the qbs sit out of practice and only learn from tape sessions, I bet their would be a positive correlation with regards to reduction of noncontact related injuries.

A question for some of you coaches. At the college level how much contact due you expose your QB to? They have to experience some but do you not expose them until the official season starts?

No coach, but: In Spring ball, essentially never. In August, you must have some to get your people ready to QB actual games. How much you do in fall depends on how critical a single guy is. Also, if there is still a heated competition going on for starting QB, you "expose" them more to find out who's got the stuff when the heat's on. If you have a clear starter with a serious gap until number two [or you only have three guys total] then you are VERY careful with THE guy.

Pros will tell you the same thing.

Someone make sure Wooly's in a safe place surrounded by family or friends.

I wouldn't see that as a reflection of our secondary at all. I think it's pretty clear that would be all Longo's fault.

I think it will be on watchnd.tv and in watch ND app for smart phones.

Edit: it actually looks like it will be on the nbc sports live app, so it should be nbc sports website.
