I think the going trend now is to evaluate kids on their draft potential instead of their actual ability. In this manner a kid can be the best kicker ever and still never get rated higher than a 3 :s:.This is why guards are also consistently ranked lower than tackles.

Makes sense. But I do like ndaccountant's recommendation to at least do composite scoring to get some sort of ranking. That way teams aren't penalized in overall recruit rankings for taking a kicking specialist.

This post is not strictly about how we're ranked but a bit of perspective about whether we're doing well.

I looked at RIVALS current 2014 listings. here is the lay of the landscape according to their numbers, and my spin on them:

There have been 1250 verbal commitments so far. Of those 201 are rated four or five star. This means than one of every six currently committed recruits might be considered blue chips, but five out of every six are not. The point here is that essentially everyone building football programs is taking guys that they think are potential rough gemstones.

There are many highly recognized programs around the country currently sitting with a single four-star recruit in stable. Nebraska, TCU, Louisville, UCLA, Purdue, WVU, Pitt, are examples. BYU has none. Cal, OkSt, VT, MSU, IA have two. Notre Dame is listed as 9 [2 "5s" and 7 "4s"]. Georgia is listed equal to us with nine [1+8] and Miami [all 4s] and Alabama has 10 [all fours].

The staff is kicking a$$.

Of those 4s and 5s, there are 21 QBs, 23 RBs, 25 WRs, 7 TEs, 29 OLine, 11 ATHs, 8 {only} DEs, 18 DTs, 25 LBs, and 34 DBs [these numbers are for the players already verballed]. As we know better than most fan bases, the game of football is decided by the QBs and the BIGs in the trenches.

Of the 21 QBs, Kelly has his. AL, FL, LSU, A&M, GA, TX, Miami, and Clemson also do. The big boys are of course paying attention, and we are one of them.

Of the 29 OLine, no one has what Kelly has in our four supermen. Miami has three, OSU has three, AL, LSU, USC have two. The staff is again kicking the nation's butt here.

Of the 26 DLine, as we know from our constant angst on this issue, we're not doing as well. GA has THREE DTs of this level. Miami has two DTs and one DE. ND has our wonderful Mr Hayes [thank goodness], but other programs aren't stellar in this area either yet. LSU has just one. USC one. Alabama none yet.

Kelly has loaded up the offensive side so far, and no team in the country can currently compare to us. We have eight potentially elite players over there. Now it's time to give Mr Hayes some more sparkling help [although, in my opinion, some of our three stars there are awfully underrated].

So, perspective gentlemen: we're Notre Dame and we're doing just fine.

Its hard to be disappointed with the class we currently have, but that just makes us aim higher for finishing out the class. :)

Just noticed Western Michigan is #25 right now. They obviously won't stay there, but pretty nuts regardless.

WMU is ranked too high only because their young coach has aggressively gone out early and gotten a large number of verbals. These guys are of the "OK" variety but not blue chips [except the QB].

Still, one has to admire the energy of this new coach, and the "strategy" of filling up early so as to clear a little more time for coaching and 2015 recruit cultivating. Maybe he'll ultimately get WMU back to the 8-5, 9-4 "glory days". [with an occasional 10-2].

Hey, the Bronks were always tough on the schedule. They were always the bridesmaids with BGSU to the great UT, Miami of Ohio, Marshall, or CMU teams.

We are actually #9 on the 247 team ranking. The #7 ranking is the 247 composite which takes all 4 services into account.

Touche, I was so excited I forgot there are two 247s, lol.

No worries. 247 makes their own team rankings more difficult to find than they should. They want to pump their industry unique composite rankings so they bury their own.

Newsome went from unranked to the #1 Punter on the 247 composite rankings. I'm not sure when it happened, but both Scout and Rivals are showing him as a 3-star so I'm guessing their ranking bumped him up. He's still unranked by 247.

This is only significant because it pushed us back into the top 10 247 composite rankings. We had previously fallen from #7 to #11 with the Hood de-commitment, but now sit at #9.

what a PR disaster it would have been if he put RPG instead with the picture of the helicopter.

Can anyone see BK flying around lighting up other coaches visiting recruits:

You mean BK doesn't have his own helicopter with his face painted in ND colours? That's disappointing.

4 Star LB DJ Calhoun just decommited from USC. They now have the #67 class in the country, and the #12 PAC-12 class.

Yikes.

I wonder what our class rank on 247 will once they finally include McKenzie. Lolz that because of Loy's ego 247 isn't counting him as a commit

#7 on the 247 Composite Team Rankings with the Morgan commitment

ESPN has ND at 11...couldn't tell if Morgan was included. With or without...it's still a joke.

It (the ESPN list) has 23 commits in it's team ranking for ND. Our front page shows 23 w Morgan and without McKensie.

We're 3rd on Scout. Can't complain with back to back top 10 classes, you need to do that to have a chance. One top 10 class doesn't mean much by itself. Things are looking good.

Unless things have changed, ESPN's rankings don't update continuously. Instead they do updates at certain intervals. If you look at the drop down menu it has rankings from certain dates. So, although they may have put Morgan on the ND page, they may not have updated the team rankings to reflect his presence.
