I firmly believe that this Keith guy reads this board.

From the article.
Kelly only had the preliminary report on Spond, making it a guessing game for fans to wonder if the junior linebacker is out for days or weeks. Some have referenced a serious concussion Spond suffered during his senior season of high school, but while relevant, it’s not really an indicator of how long or serious this injury could be.

- Can't wait to see The Wolf and Ishaq get some meaningful minutes this year.

no tuitt in the rodeo drill?

Too much excitement for our fan base to handle.

The last rep by Ishaq did not look like a "laid back" guy to me. He was angry and didn't quit. Can't wait for this young man to let loose this year.

Okwara rocking the mean facemask, and Golson going over the pile to score... love it

The thing about watching rodeo drill videos is I never know who I want to win. Do I want a dominate defense that never allows the RB through or do I want the offense throwing pancake block after pancake block. :)

Agree. Looking forward to seeing Ishaq display that kind of attitude. I am extremely excited about our linebacking core. Only a little worried about the Dog spot but that's mainly due to inexperience and depth.

On an unrelated note, I think Kelly mentioned McCarthy has cemented himself as the 3rd saftey. I wonder if the coaching staff is comfortable enough with him to start moving Slaughter around in a hybrid role. The coaches seemed to have put that plan on hold in the spring after the Collinsworth injury.

Arnold touched on this in his article, but our lack of depth at DOLB is a serious concern. If, God forbid, Spond has a long (or even permanent) lay-off due to concussion risk, that leaves Ben Councell as our only true DOLB.

Jaylon can't get here soon enough.

I've been wondering that too. If Spond's injury is as bad as I fear it is, using Slaughter as a starLB is critical.

Think if that happened we would see a lot more of nickel with an extra safety taking on that position. Would probably hurt a little against the run depending on who it is, but it would probably improve pass defense from that position.

Shembo might have to move to DOG if Spond is out a long period of time.

Someone asked BK if Shembo would move to Dog if Ishaq passed him and he straight up said no. Said both Shembo and Ishaq will play a lot, but neither at Dog. (That doesn't mean they couldn't be on the field together, but that would most likely be in pure pass rush or run stopping packages - it wouldn't be as a drop or coverage LB).

McCarthy has always had the talent and the brains, he just can't stay on the field. Finger crossed he can this year.

I am super excited about Okwara. We got a steal.Just from the little I have seen is he is a high motor guy who doesn't give up on any play. The coaches seem to love it too.

So if Spond is out and Councel get's inured...what do you do? Play a 4-3 with either Ishaq or Shembo with their hand down?

Change to more of the nickel package with the Star taking the place of the Dog, and inserting one of the safeties there (Slaughter, McCarthy, Hardy, Farley, or a Frosh)

It would be nice if Shumate makes enough noise that the staff might try to prepare him for some reps at the star spot... get a youngster on the field, someone who obviously can cover receivers (the move to CB) but is also a good run stopper... and it also allows Slaughter to stay deep in the defense, rather than placing someone with limited experience in the back and risking giving up a home run.

Whats the word on jarron jones? Is he the presumed backup to Nix??
We got depth at the DE slots but not at DT. Sheldon day was recruited as a DT but
has worked at DE, and worked well.
Do we slide him over if Romeo comes on strong at DE?

Nix and Kona are splitting time at DT, with Springman being the third option. Day is a DE this year, as is Jarron (I hope at least one redshirts). Would have been ideal to have Okwara redshirt as well, but with how impressive he has been, BK might have him on special teams off the bat.

Not saying it can't or won't happen, but I think it may be difficult for Shumate (or any freshman) to see significant reps as a true "Star." I think Shumate will definitely see the field this year, but more as a back up or nickel back.

Just my thinking, but since the Star is a true hybrid defensive position, talent alone won't suffice. Practice, technique, discipline, and understanding and knowledge of not only ND's overall defensive scheme, but the opponent's offense, all come all come into play. And this is all on top of Shumate's training as a CB. Maybe I'm wrong and over thinking things and Shumate will be able to do it. But it seems that position is better suited for an upperclassman and/or a player being groomed/trained for that role specifically.

IMO Shumate would be great for the star this year though it sounds like Dan McCarthy is the 3rd safety at the moment. I believe in the past Bama has often used their freshman safeties as a Star position

EDIT: was reading a Bama board awhile ago and they said Barron played there his frosh year and they think/hope Landon Collins will this year

I guess he makes a point about healing time and severity of the actual injury being not necessarily related to his HS injury...but healing time should be somewhat standard...you don't heal quicker because you did it on a football field.

People run around behind you with a pillow under your a$$ for two months if you sustain a head injury in a car wreck...just sayin.

Rodeo drill was impressive to me. Cave, Watt, and both Martins road-graded everyone in the filmstrip. Golic did not. Lombard was mainly successful. Starting O-Line should be kick-@$$.

Regarding DOG position and "creative substitution", Nick Baratti said that he was given to believe [way back after NSD] that he was in mind to do some of this. My real guess would be [if Spond can't go], that it's Ben for the majority of the plays [including being on the field if we use "Star"], with some relief from someone like Moore; BUT NOT Shembo.

My favorite part of the rodeo drill is watching Diaco run all over the place in his goofy hat.
