Not sure IE would like some of the names this staff has told thanks but no thanks to over the last...... 8 years.

Same could be said for every staff at every school. It's part of what make college sports so entertaining.

I liked him as a prospect a lot which is why I included him, but by the logic I just listed, almost any player that ND watched film on or evaluated and didn't offer is "passed on" and that's 200+ kids a cycle.

That's gotta be a drastic underestimation, no? Our recruiting office must get inundated with thousands of tapes every year, far more than they could ever possibly manage to evaluate in depth.

How many offers do we send out each year? Still not nearly as many as some other programs, but more than we used to, right? And I'd assume that for every kid we offer, the coaches probably watched tape for at least... what, 10 recruits at that position?

Just spit-balling here, but my thinking is that the process involved with winnowing the pool of potential recruits down to actual offers, and then reducing that pool of interested prospects into commitments we're willing to take, etc. is surely a lot more intimidating (and unscientific) than some here are assuming.

It is, of course, impossible to count the number of recruits we've "passed on" over the last eight years who went on to become quality college football players. So many variables.

Counting four-star recruits with family ties to the program and/or from pipeline high schools who we've "passed" on - or maybe offered but didn't pursue very aggressively - would be a much more manageable endeavor.

Things going from bad to worse. Rivals reporting that he now has a top 3 and ND is not in it. Lea and him have fallen off in communication. Driskell also said he had a spot early on but roster needs have changed. He waited too long and missed his window.

Did you expect to make the top 3 for guy that isn’t a take at the moment? Seems like it’s the first day everyday with this recruitment.

People want him, ND doesn’t want him. Pretty simple as to why the board keeps getting plugged. Many fans still holding out hope he finds his way to the roster. It won’t go away until he commits to OSU.

We’ll see him his JR and SR year against OSU. Gonna be fun to watch what ND passed on. Wish him nothing but the best except for in 2022 & 2023 when he’s playing ND

If Cody has a successful career at OSU we are not likely to face him during his senior in 2023. Who is the last impact player at OSU who stuck around for a fourth year?

I'm gonna be sick. Come December I hope there is room and he flips to ND

I can get behind this line of thinking.

----------------------------------------------

I thought for sure every Buckeye site was gonna throw out the huge win over ND for Simon but Letterman Row didn't try it. In fact they say ND never pursued him.

...and what's with OSU trying to say they are recruiting a better class of prospect? Don't go throwin' Eli & his mama under the bus now fellas.

What makes Cody Simon stand out
Cody Simon is another player, and person, that fits what has to be considered the “new normal” for Buckeyes football players. Simon is a highly intelligent, thoughtful young person who has avoided the recruiting hype-machine as much as possible despite being one of the country’s best prospects.

In May, he talked with Lettermen Row about his recruitment and you can easily see what we mean when we say he’s someone that fans will appreciate in Columbus. His brother, Shayne, plays at Notre Dame and Simon — most thought — would follow him. The Irish never pursued him and though Ohio State was later to recruiting him than Nebraska, Penn State and others he wanted to give them a real shot to win the battle. They did.

All I can say is, Liufau and Bertrand better ball out because one of those guys is sitting on Cody's spot. Also, Mac Uihlein better be able to step right in and carry on after the current crop becuz I don't see many Cody Simon's in the class of '21.

I agree. 21 looks destitute of ND LBs

2021 haven’t even played their Junior seasons at this point. Right about now, Kevin Pyne was the greatest offensive tackle people had seen lol. I’m exaggerating but things change quickly and I think they’ll be some midwestern guys who have big junior seasons and then ND will offer them. I’ll be curious if ND is under the scholly limit in 2020 and if they’ve got 10-11 scholarship LBers if they’ll regret not taking Simon.

Coaches have their reasons......I'm not gonna armchair QB them on this one. Best of luck to him in Columbus!

Exactly, Cody Simon wasn’t the prospect he is this time last year. Patience is certainly needed on that front.

The only thing, in this particular situation, that helps is that it is Lea's position group. He knows what he needs and he has found underrated talent before and turned them into quality players.

That's not the only thing. We also have a stacked LB room and most of the frosh LBs will be redshirting. And people are very bullish on Lamb/Simon and they both have 4 years of eligibility remaining.

As much as I hate skipping an LB this cycle, it does feel like the cupboard is overflowing. We've oversigned the position which feels like a distinctly new thing for ND.

If the staff is comfortable with LB depth, especially if they are going to start rotating like the DL, then we gotta trust them.

I hate to see ND passing on Cody, but I am right there with you, best post of the passing on Cody or analyzing on the kids ND has passed on. There is a reason why the coaching staff passed on him and you gotta trust the coaches.

Ummm, no. This is the internet and you are on a message board. Armchair away.

That response was sprinkled in italics but not enough to actually use the I button.

I am glad that you finally figured it out this is the internet and your on a message board.

I know how to use the Italics when I need to.

Trust the coaches (no Italics needed).

Seems like the obvious reason is that they over-recruited the position in the 3 previous classes to fill previous holes. They need 2 per class, and they've taken 3-4 per class (because they were continually disappointed with the previous class), and will have 11 players for essentially 2 spots (3 in rotation) next year.

That's the reason they like flexible DBs and RB/WRs, they can be moved. ILBs are harder to move.

They probably thought White was going to leave, but now they really like him. They now need to wait and see if Lamb, Ekwonu, or Liufau can grow into WDEs, but they also can't move them until they know White can stay healthy or Bauer can play consistently since DE is stacked next year and ILB is open.

Jonathan Jones

Drew White
Jordan Genmark Heath

Matthew Bauer
Jack Lamb
Shayne Simon

Jack Kiser
Osita Ekwonu
JD Bertrand
Marist Liufau,

Marist Liufau,

I don't think Lamb or Ekwonu move to drop. Lamb is not a pure pass rusher like Ovie and Ekwonu isn't long enough IMO.

Agreed. WhyTF does everyone think Ekwonu is going to change positions? His frame is all LB or RB. I can't seem him playing any other position.

Some think so because he has enough in common with skinny, fast-twitch OLB recruits like Okwara and Oghoufo, that it becomes an easy pattern to project. Okwara, and even Kofi, were a little bit bigger, but still undersized DEs. It was not at all clear that Oghoufo was going to be able to put on the weight.

Now a pattern is emerging. That's how people's brains work. It's not surprising that causal fans would see it.

Ekwonu seems too small to me too, but my point was that even the guys that may move can't right now.
