Transfers happen at every school.. Look at every D1 program and see how many QB starters were transfers from other schools.. I can name a handful off the top of my head

Fields
Hunter Johnson
Hurts
Brandon Peters
Shea Patterson
Kelly Bryant
Jacob Eason
Shane Buechele
and so on.

Book is 20-3 as a starter.. Keep him healthy, and develop the next guy. Right now it looks like Clark, who had some snaps which is good. Buchner hopefully is an EE now. Coaches leaving to coach other places and backup QB's transferring out to me, is a sign of a program that is stable and winning.

For me it's more frustration with squandering elite talent. It seems to happen A LOT under BK. We get these 4-5 star QBs or other players and they end up transferring or sitting on the bench. I can't even think of anyone besides Jaylon and some O-Linemen that came in as top recruits and lived up to or even exceeded expectations. I'm sure there are examples I'm forgetting but there are so many guys who waste away. Is it more likely that the entire scouting community (and most of us) were dead wrong about a kid's ability or that our staff screwed something up? That being said maybe he got to school and just slacked off and didn't do what he needed to do. I guess we will never know.

I wonder what that number really is?

This isn't unique to ND. Martell, Fields, Burrows and Fromm are a few examples. Edit: Posted before reading Sully's longer list.

What's wrong with your 3 star QB developing into a better QB than the 5 star kid? It's not like Book is middling average. Seems to me that means your 3 star is now a 5 star.

Why would the staff even want to change his throwing motion did anyone see his high school stats? 39 TD's 6 INT only in his Senior year he had over 5200 yards total rushing/Throwing. Completion % of 73 %

Wimbush had comparable stats throwing the ball in high school, I believe...

Sometimes inaccuracy isn't apparent when you're a star that can loft the ball deep down the field or tuck-and-run on every play.

And that works in some college offenses, even! Just not the ND offense, and it became clear with Wimbush that BK doesn't want the offense built around the QB run game.

Disappointing, and as others have said, makes no sense unless you’re pretty confident you’ll get a waiver, or have been passed on the depth chart by someone younger.
I also wonder why he didn’t wait to see who the OC is going to be? Unless, I guess, he already knows.

I had the same thought. Unless this is really personal, it would seem odd to make this call before you know the OC you will be working under.

It isn't that ND squanders it. It's that ND doesn't get enough of it.

Recently, ND has started getting far more higher end talent, which will make a key difference. Every team is going to have their hits and misses. ND can't afford to limit their pool and decrease their margin for error.

the offense he committed to in 2017 with Wimbush at the helm is VASTLY different from what it is right now. The current emphasis on a more complex passing game and less of an emphasis on having an athlete at QB doesn't fit hit game. The writing has been on the wall with this honestly since book took over in 2018 and the offense morphed accordingly. Wish PJ all the best.

I wondered what was going with PJ. Granted, it is tough to overtake the existing QB unless you are just far and away better. You cant be even with him. So there are some questions/arguments

1) Did PJ get enough PT and attention in practice to really show his stuff?

2) Was he really capable of being QB1 or did he just ceiling out at HS?

I remember Crist coming in and everyone just couldnt wait to see 5 star Crist light it up...until he threw the first pass into the turf on a RB wide open flare pattern. The guy had all the makings of greatness but just never happened. You have to assume ole Chuckles believed in him and had a great relationship because he followed him to Kansas.

I dont know. Was PJ really that bad that he couldnt overtake a 3 star 6ft tall QB that couldnt throw more than 20 yards downfield?

Mmmmm You sure?

Book ran for 560 yds this season up from 200 something last season. I think it's just the opposite for Book, he's at his best and most dangerous when he's getting those designed run plays sent in 4-6 times a game. They are like an automatic 10 yds each time.

My gut says Phil would have been better at that and his ability (and fearlessness) to stretch the D with 50+ yarders opens up things we haven't seen Book have a chance to exploit.

We'll be dialing back the running next year unless they feel a lot better about Clark AND Pyne than they felt about Phil AND Clark.

I know you say that for dramatic effect, but it ignores the significant amount of skill talent that has flourished since 2015.

Playing for BVG is a good excuse, as are other examples of top guys not panning out... but it doesn't hold water when you add everything up. Redfield was his own worst enemy.

More than happy to leave things in the hands of Book with the new OC potentially making things more Book friendly. Clark looked more than fine to take on BU responsibilities. Pyne coming in too. And if TB is as god as advertised, wouldn't be shocked to see him start year 1 if he indeed is an EE.

All the luck in the world to PJ. I would have much rather him got his degree before jumping though, which has zero to do with FB. I just hope he doesn't overreach in the school he picks. I'd rather see him go somewhere that will no doubt start him. Another pine riding transfer would be heartbreaking.

I understand 100% the desire to play. I get it. But if you arent playing by year three, you have about a 1 in a zillion chance of going pro. Why wouldnt he get the ND degree and ride that to a successful career rather than having one year playing for a MAC or low PAC10 team?
