I know its been a rough day for you, buddy! You've had a lot invested in, 5 star. Don't give up hope!
Sucks.
2021 just got more difficult.
I have nothing invested in Phil. I have 45 years of my life invested in ND football.
ND needs the hit rate on elite talent QB's to improve. Why should I have any expectation that Buchner will be different?

I believe Notre Dame has a Trevor Lawrence/Andrew Luck level player in Buchner so I respectfully disagree.
Super interested in the evolution of Clark and Pyne this Spring. Because that 2021 roster will have some serious dudes on it. The defense should be absolutely loaded and the offense will be replacing most the OL but with studs and the skill positions should be stocked.
This sucks. I thought he would’ve been a great option especially in 2021.
What about Kmet?Good luck to Phil. Hope he does well. So Clark is now number 2.
Is Buchner going to enrol early or stay at his school playing another sport. These duel sports guys might not have the focus in their first few years. Kmet and Phil.

Great, our best QB on roster is transferring...

It's really too bad BK doesn't have the guts to bench the starting QB to play the more talented back-up...
I think the fact he is leaving indicates that he wasn't 1 play away from being the starter and was likely being demoted to third team by Clark. If he was the firm #2, then it truly doesn't make sense unless there's something else taking place outside of the rank structure in the QB room.
I don't get it. You're going to have to sit out a year anyway. You're 1 play from being the starter.
Good luck I guess.
Called this the day that Book said he was coming back.
I really think this shows that Kelly is poor at developing talent when he gets it on campus. I hope he can bring in an OC that can develop a QB for us.
I disagree, I think quite the opposite...Book went from a 3 star QB with offers from a ton of small schools (Nevada, Boise, San Jose St, UNLV ) to a 3 year starter (next year included) at ND with a 22-3 record and 53 TD's to 13 Int's over the last 2 years. I'd say BK and Co developed the shit out of him.
Some of you people amaze me.. If he was truly good enough.. BK gives him a shot. Simple.
No idea what he wrote but Driskell gets extremely butt hurt when a player he 'graded' so high doesn't pan out. It must be someones fault other than the eval.

Oh no, Book is leaving too?
NDOhio has it right. Whose fault is it if Phil couldn't beat out Book in practice? When has Kelly ever had a problem benching a QB in favor of a backup? It happens all the time. Crist, Rees, Golson, Zaire, Kizer, and Wimbush have all been benched at one point or another for poor play (Sometimes more than once). Most of the time we find out the coaches have it right and were starting the right guy all along. In the case of Crist in 2011 they were wrong, they should have started Tommy all along. Benching the others didn't turn out so hot though. Trust your head, not your heart.

Coach D HATES Tommy Rees lol.
Dude is going to go off the deep-end if (when) Rees is named OC.
He thinks Tommy sucks badly, and will be a failure as OC. I'm not sure how he could know that already, particularly if Rees really was calling plays late in the year when the offense actually opened up on standard downs.
I'm starting to think Driskell either has a personal ax to grind with Rees, or is overly-invested in Phil J for some reason.
How so? Buchner will be coming, Clark will be in his 3rd year and Pyne will have a year and a half at ND. A There is no reason to assume we won't have a good QB in 2021 and hopefully we can run the ball by then
Now I'll always be playing the 'what if' game with Phil. He has so many similarities to Kizer. Both awful in the spring game, both tall athletes with strong arms. No one believed in Kizer until he was forced on the field and performed. If Book got hurt, would the gamer in Phil have come out?
But at the same time he can barely even throw a spiral so I'm not gonna get too bummed out.
Next years QB room: Rees coaching Book (Rees 2.0), Clark (Rees 3.0) and Pyne (Rees 4.0). Bring it on.

Can any of these guys throw more than 20 yards?
Eh, does it really? Arguably the best way to look at this statistically would be yds/att. And Golson's ND career had him at 7.85. In all games Book has started it's 7.95. And Kizer is at 8.35. So, I think you could make the case that Kizer's ability to push the ball downfield more than made up for his shortcomings (compared to Book) but don't see that with Golson.
1) Phil was Buchner before Buchner. So I am not counting on anything from him.
2) ND's needs to have elite QB play to take advantage of the rest of the roster. I personally don't see anything from those two that suggest they would be elite.
Look, Clark and Pyne could turn out great. Or, they could be average. I don't know. But, there is no mistaking that Phil had the foundation / skill set that had a tremendous ceiling. Losing that is not something to just take in stride. This one stings IMO.
Phil had 81 touchdowns his Junior year? No, no he didn't. I think Tyler is going to be the best QB ND has had in a very long time. Clark looked good in the game he played. Worrying about 2021 today is fruitless. Lots of things can happen between then and now
