No use sticking around and fighting for a starting spot when you can go to another school, start, and get demoted.

Whatevs, I think Pyne's moxie will get him through any possible injury to Book this year. Also, the seat is just being kept warm for TB anyways.

Some of you people amaze me.. If he was truly good enough.. BK gives him a shot. Simple.

Agreed that the timing is a bit odd. Any chance that it might have to do with impending OC news that Phil didn't like?

Will Kelly really let him transfer to Pitt? Especially since we play them next year? He’ll probably end up getting a waiver someway, somehow.

Edit: I’ve been a Clark fan since the beginning of the year when he got in at garbage time. His confidence was noticeable on a big body. I think we’ll be OK. Best of luck to “5-Star Phil”.

Good luck to PJ moving forward. I want to see all these kids succeed even if it means that sometimes it won't be at the school you cheer for.

I assumed this was coming the day Book announced that he was coming back. Transfer quarterbacks are doing pretty well so I can't say I blame him...

Other than an injury to Book, there was nothing else he could have done to become the starter, right? By all accounts he was a good student, teammate, worker, etc.

Maybe I'm missing something?

Best move he can make. Sitting around for another year does him no good at all when he can be starting at a lot of other places, including plenty of Power Five schools.

Assuming he gets a waiver.

Called this the day that Book said he was coming back.

I really think this shows that Kelly is poor at developing talent when he gets it on campus. I hope he can bring in an OC that can develop a QB for us.

So, what happened with Book? He didn't develop while on campus? Or Kizer? Some (not myself tho) think Zaire was developing well pre-injury.

He's probably going to petition for some sort of hardship, either based on his OC leaving or based on whatever the official waiver reason for "Sold a Bill of Goods" is. He's going to argue in NCAA-legal jargon that he was promised a fair shot but didn't get one.

This offseason will be an interesting test to see if the NCAA is going to try and cut back on waivers, or if they're cool with the flood gates being open.

(For the record, idc if Phil is eligible immediately or not. I've got no beef with a kid feeling like he needs to find a better situation for himself. I just truly don't know whether he'll get a waiver like every other transfer QB or not.)

all he has to do is hire Justin Fields's lawyer and he will get the waiver. Didn't all the recent QB transfers just hire this one same guy to get them sorted?

I absolutely loved Jurkovec as a prospect so I hate to see this happen. Still don't get the benefit of transferring now, unless he gets a waiver. This feels strange to me.

THIS! so he could have played this year as a back up but will now sit for a year when HE could have been the man the following year....but good luck, was looking forward to him

The problem is everyone was using logic to figure out what was the best route for him and you ignored the biggest point of all. He's only what 19 or 20? Emotion is greater than logic at his age.

I have to be honest and say this doesn't bother me. For all of the prehype, he never did impress me when he got his limited reps. He had one big pass, but he missed several reads after completing that pass and it appeared he was pulling the ball down and running too early most of the time. That told me he was either unsure on what he was seeing, nervous or didn't have a grasp of the play.

Best of luck to the kid.

Sorry to heat PJ is leaving, but not surprising either. Never got to see what he had to offer. Hope it turns out OK for him.
Any ideas where he may go?

I disagree, I think quite the opposite...Book went from a 3 star QB with offers from a ton of small schools (Nevada, Boise, San Jose St, UNLV ) to a 3 year starter (next year included) at ND with a 22-3 record and 53 TD's to 13 Int's over the last 2 years. I'd say BK and Co developed the shit out of him.

BK won games of football with Tommy Rees, a guy who was cut from a training camp tryout with the Redskins because he threw so badly and inaccurately that they couldn't evaluate the WR's they had in the tryout with him.

I'd say BK does pretty fine with getting the most out of His QB's too

I bet Coach Rees loves when people bring this up lol. Somebody should make sure that GameDay brings it up when they're in town for the Clemson game

Not too surprising --- our QB pipeline is chuck full of talent.

Jurkovek was unusual (in my data-poor eyes) due to being a superior athlete. Kind of invincible at the high school level ... some imitation of Superman. His film was comparable to Terrell Pryor's. Neither could be stopped, almost on their own.

But I'm not sweating this as far as ND is concerned. We have far greater positional needs to reach playoff levels than QB. Had we been Clemson/ OSU/ Bama good at RB and WR we'd have been there this season. Prior to Tua, Bama won titles with less than Book and our pipeline players at QB. My feelings are that if we'd even had USC quality WRs and (including Stepp) RBs we might well have been in this year.

Who knows what Jurkovec's issues were. I do know that you don't play for Coach unless you have control of the whole job/system that we play. (if there's another talented guy who does.)

All the best for him, of course --- he is/was one of us and "no warrior left behind."

For me it's more frustration with squandering elite talent. It seems to happen A LOT under BK. We get these 4-5 star QBs or other players and they end up transferring or sitting on the bench. I can't even think of anyone besides Jaylon and some O-Linemen that came in as top recruits and lived up to or even exceeded expectations. I'm sure there are examples I'm forgetting but there are so many guys who waste away. Is it more likely that the entire scouting community (and most of us) were dead wrong about a kid's ability or that our staff screwed something up? That being said maybe he got to school and just slacked off and didn't do what he needed to do. I guess we will never know.

My theory is that the staff saw Phil J as another Wimbush because of mechanical issues. That's why he didn't get a shot when Book struggled, like Book got when Wimbush struggled.

If Phil could hit the layups, he probably would've gotten his chance post-scUM. But BK tried hard that week to tell the press "Book is our best option and Phil isn't good enough right now" without directly saying it.

Did Phil get the help he needed from the staff? Based on the fact that we heard about them changing his throwing motion, and then deciding to back off of that and let him throw how he wants... I'd say they tried what they could.

This.

And yes, he'll go to Pitt, be allowed to play immediately and drop 400 passing yards on us while looking like the next Dan Marino, suddenly devoid of 'mechanical issues'.

Why would the staff even want to change his throwing motion did anyone see his high school stats? 39 TD's 6 INT only in his Senior year he had over 5200 yards total rushing/Throwing. Completion % of 73 %
