Damn. He's only a sophomore, and hasn't even finished his second summer camp. Plenty of time to grow, regardless of Hamilton's presence.

Wish he would've stuck it out for the year, but he's gotta make moves for his future as early as possible, I guess.

Wow wonder what it was a combination of I mean obviously Hamilton coming in and killing it right off the bat had to have something to do with it, maybe he saw the writing on the wall.

It seems like he has a path to start in 2020 with Gilman and Elliot leaving after this year (I think). But at the same time, no one has really reported on him as flashing at any practice whereas Hamilton is 100% flashing. Good luck to him

He should be playing a hybrid linebacker/box safety kind of role, but the most concerning thing I read was about him “not being physical enough”... I don’t expect him to run with Keys or Lenzy, but if he isn’t being physical I don’t know what his path to the field is.

Lax laid out the warning back in March. Derrick's skill set, style of play & genetics aren't forming the shape of peg that's needed to fit the holes at Stud/Rover Add to that the abundance of young talent at LB and S and there's no need to try and make it fit in Allen's case.

Super disappointed. One of my favorite recruits to watch from a very young age. Sometimes your body doesn't agree with your playing style. It will be interesting to go back and read this thread. From 5*ish CB early on to a guy ya knew was eventually gonna be a LB before he got to campus.

Hopefully he finds the right situation at a good school like GT, UVa, Vandy, Duke or even Northwestern. Best of luck to him on and off the field.

Luke Fickell deploys several hybrid-style positions that Derrik could fill... he's more than welcome in Cincinnati.

I saw somewhere the staff was hoping he would come into camp lighter than he did.

I agree he looks like a future LB and ND has a bunch of guys his age or younger on that depth chart who aren't trying to learn the position for the first time.

It makes sense for him from a football perspective.

He stayed as long as he could and if he wasn't feeling ND anymore or he was tired of not earning a spot, I can understand.

I wish him luck and I hope he has success at his next stop. I also turn my eyes back towards the guys who want to be here.

GT would be a good spot for him if was also feeling a little homesick.

Anyway...all in on Hamilton and DJ Brown next year at safety.

Sucks. Really wanted to see him play next year and maybe rotate in a bit this year. Highly touted recruit. I honestly think hes home sick and ends up playing somewhere back in GA. Well see

Article summed it up, "writing was on the wall". I think the rankings may have missed on this kid, or maybe he just wasnt a fit.

Either way, I hope he does well wherever he goes.

Sucks. Would have thought, based on his profile and potential, that he would’ve been a big player next year at strong safety. Could’ve been a three-year starter. But apparently not.

Yep, I thought he was the future. Unless the staff came out and told him that it's DJ Brown and Hamilton next year at S, I find this to be odd. He ran with the 2's yesterday, next to Hamilton. We play 2 S's. You're going to have competition anywhere you go, why not compete for another 1 year and earn that SS spot next to Hamilton. He'd have a chance to start for at least 2 years. Getting scared off by DJ Brown and Litchield Avajon is just bizarre to me.

Never a good idea to give up a free education from ND because you're not as good at football as most thought.

Best of luck, Mr. Allen. Hoping the best for you.

Driskell adamant it's not about playing time

Makes no sense. Could he really not beat out DJ Brown for a starting spot next year? He'd be a redshirt sophomore, starting and with 3 years of eligibility.

Oh well. Not surprised. He seemed to not have a true position on defense.

Not sure what happened, but Driskell making it sound like ND has some part in this, and just isn't about Allen being unhappy with this playing time. Said it's a two way street thing, and that's all he would say about it.

IIRC weren't there rumors that he wanted to transfer in his first year basically as soon as he arrived? Notre Dame isn't for everybody. Good luck to him.

Maybe he was one of those players getting pancaked in the practice videos and just didnt react well to the lickin'? I mean, why would you quit mid practice unless you were pissed beyond acceptance or just humiliated and didnt feel you could compete?

So it could be homesickness. Or some other personal reason, maybe family related.
