I wish Derrik would reconsider but if he's truly unhappy and the ND degree isn't worth sacrificing his playing time for the next 2-3 years, then he's gotta make that choice.

I'd hate to regret that decision but he seems bright and likable. There can be great satisfaction in working through adversity but maybe he feels like a player without a position. I wish there was an optimal solution here.

I think we all wanted to see him on special teams and starting to carve out a niche in the next 6-12 months.

Damn....just caught this and read the local story in the SB Tribune. I was excited to see Derrick get some PT this year, but not start.

He reminds of Darnell Ewell, highly recruiting, expected to come in and contribute. At least Ewell is sticking it out.

Good luck Allen!

Fine. But I’m trying to remember the last kid who transferred out of Notre Dame and made a real dent somewhere else (enough to, say, get drafted into the NFL) and the best I can come up with is kind of Aaron Lynch. Am I missing someone?

Does EV count?

That was fast.

At least on its face, it doesn't look like this got dragged out and for that I am grateful. If you have to beg or convince a kid to stay, there's a pretty good chance it doesn't work out anyway. It seems pretty clear that his body was/is in between that of a DB and a LB, so better to let him move on and keep good relations with recruits and HS coaches in a state like GA.

Dude must have been done with ND for a while to land so quickly.

Peace.

Does he get to count this year as his sit out year then? How does that work?

We play them back to back in '20 and '21.

Best of luck, see you on the gridiron.

He sits unless he has a good enough reason for the NCAA to allow for immediate eligibility.

He should be eligible in '20 as a RS Soph with 3 years eligibility.

When you have to convince someone to stay it’s not going to work out in the long run. I can’t imagine BK trying to convince him to stay anyway.

UPDATE: Read that Kelly and didn't try to keep him. Kelly had FaceTime call with Allen’s father about the transfer.

He sits unless he has a good enough reason for the NCAA to allow for immediate eligibility.

He should be eligible in '20 as a RS Soph with 3 years left

NCAA has shown many a time you don’t need to have a good reason.

Seems like to me he missed being at home.

Eric Hansen usually has yearly articles on how ND transfers do. It will be interesting to see what he can write about Derrik Allen. No disrespect to Allen I don't think the NCAA will waiver him or should waiver him to play this year.

I like Derrik and if he can get the committee to give him eligibility, I'd be excited to watch for his stats this fall. I have no issues either way.

Listed as back up SS behind returning 3 yr Sr starter, Tariq Carpenter who is 6-4/225+. GT’s running a base 4-2-5.

Allen is listed at 6-2/208 and a COVID adjusted RS Soph

Allen never cracked the two deep at Tech. Sometimes the recruiting rankings are wrong and the transfers out are not because our coaches have screwed up.

more often than not the transfers out are not because of our coaches screwing up.

I actually can only think of 2 transfers that I would really want back - Michael Young and Phil Jurcovec. Not saying the coaches screwed it up, I have no idea. But I just mean most of them never amounted to players that would have/should have started at ND.

Michael Young, sure. I don't know about Phil, I haven't been sold. I wouldn't have traded him for Book, and that's why he transferred to begin with. I think his mobility would have been good this year and he probably starts over Coan. Then again, Coan came in really because Phil left. I think Coan is tougher though and has the chest to play at ND. Phil didn't. That's all that matters at the end of the day.

Gene Chizik as DC worst hire ever? At least Van Gorder was an actual coach when he was hired.

They really were terrible, some of that was coaching though. That defensive game plan vs Drew Pyne was the strangest thing...
That was one of the worst displays of defensive coaching I've ever watched. Wild that both their head coach and DC have national titles under their belt. Good luck to Mr. Allen.

... and to think that this kid would have cost a serious bag if he had come out of high school in the NIL era.
