QB is one of the few positions where if everything goes according to plan, the number two only plays when the game's in the bag, and once you get three-deep there's basically no chance of playing time at all. At a top program, you often have to wait several years for the chance to *compete* for an opening position, and you're utterly screwed if you get passed in the depth chart by a guy with more eligibility. And unlike other positions where there's basically only one starter (like kicker), schools intentionally recruit an excess of QBs.

But part of it is personality. I think it's possible ND, Alabama, Ohio State, etc. attract people who are enamored with the idea of being THE guy at THE school, and were that guy in high school. Going from a 5* QB recruit with huge national attention to sitting the bench 2-3 years is a hard pill to swallow.

Idk if including Ohio State in this necessarily applies, even though they just lost Joe Burrow.

It seems like every year, Urban ends up using multiple QB's. They had Miller/Barrett, Barrett/Jones, Barrett/Jones, Barrett/Haskins, and now this year they'll probably have need for both Haskins and Tate Martell (either via injury or a time share).

Joe Burrow leaving for being too far down on the depth chart is an outlier for them.

(It's also hilarious that the national media, and LSU breauxs, think Ohio State's third-string QB is going to solve LSU's problems, but that's a discussion for a different place.)

On the QB thing, here's a list of all the 5* QBs from 2012-2017. The bolded names ended up transferring.

Hunter Johnson
Jacob Eason
Shea Patterson

Tua Tagovailoa
Davis Mills
Blake Barnett
Kyler Murray

Josh Rosen
Kyle Allen
Max Browne

Christian Hackenberg
Gunner Kiel

That's 66% of 5* QBs. And Tua said in a recent interview that if he didn't get played in the national championship game, he would've transferred too. I don't think it's anything specific to Notre Dame.

WRT to OSU, see the recruiting by year breakdown. Collier ended his career early rather that pursue a grad transfer. Burrow is gone and my hunch is that one of Haskins and Martell is gone by next summer if one of them takes command.

JT - 135 national rank - class of 2013
Stephen Collier - 633 national rank - class of 2014
Joe Burrow - 280 national rank - class of 2015
Dwayne Haskins - 91 national rank - class of 2016
Tate Martell - 56 national rank - class of 2017
Matt Baldwin - 331 national rank - class of 2018

Also, don't forget that the only time Meyer has stacked back to back 5* QB's was at Florida with Tebow and Cam. Cam left, suspension or not.

This. They get such inflated ego's that they think they are ready to step in from day one and don't like waiting their turn.

Don't know the specifics on Johnson and/or his will to compete for the starting job but I do think the mentality of many players is just what's been posted. It takes a special player to work on and hopefully improve upon the reasons he isn't getting the nod at his position. Those are the types I want on my team. A willingness to compete and earn what you get. And even moreso, a willingness to do whatever it takes for your team to win when your number isn't being called.

Nope.

You're one mishap away from a return to the 'Ville.

You got it wrong. I used to work with a guy that is a big Razorback fan and has some connections. He told me Bobby was the one "riding bitch" on the cycle. His special assistant was new to handling a motorcycle, thus the accident.

Haha one of my student workers was an equipment manager for Petrino.

There is a LOT more to that story than just Petrino crashing a motorcycle with his mistress.

This isn't a situation where he could be eligible to play right away for Northwestern is it? 2 former 5 star QBs transferring onto our schedule would be less than ideal.

Of course, but the if you want to get to the NFL as a QB, you need to get lots of quality reps. That means being in live game situations where you get to make mistakes. Sitting on the bench and/or getting yanked as soon as something bad happens isn't getting you to the league.

Long story short, for a QB, its better to start at Montana or North Dakota St. or Delaware, then ride the Bench at Alabama or ND, honing your craft for the good of the team.

Most 5-star QBs are probably prima donnas, but they are also guys who objectively have at least some of the tools to make it the NFL if things go right. That puts them in a small group, and they have 5 years to try to hone those skills.

What they need to do is not allow their egos to get so well polished by professional salesmen, and pick the school that gave them the best opportunity--rather than offering name recognition and college glory.

I agree with all you posted. If he has an opportunity somewhere else, he should take it. I can't argue with a player who simply wants to play and be able to showcase his skills. Get that degree and if his football skills doesn't pack him, his degree will if he applies himself.

yup if you watch any of the NFL draft scouting coverage they say the scouts always covet the multi year starter QB's.

He wouldn’t start in 2018 at Northwestern even if he was eligible.
