i smell some serious neg recruiting on tennessee's part if this is true.

they must put on quite a show for these recruits.
Aaaaaand this. For real though. This recruitment reeks of it. There is literally nothing Tenn can offer on the field that ND can't, and they sure as shit can't offer what ND can offer academically. So either this kid is all about partying and getting his pole wet or there is some serious neg recruiting going on.

Or the family knows that Wiltfong is a good dude, and they keep him updated on all the twists and turns of a high-schoolers tough decision-making process?

So he's a good dude. So he's doing his job. Ok. What positive does this do for Hunter's football career? does this make him look better or worse? Does that even matter?

I wouldn't let someone profit off my kid unless the process was painting my kid in a positive light. Maybe I'm more sensitive to marketing and PR related issues because of my professional career(?)

Dude, Wiltfong is quite possibly one of the best in this business. More recruitniks should handle things the way he does. One thing he is absolutely not is a click whore as you put it. I can think of a few recruits that he has had to change his CBs more than once but it's not often and its not unless info provided to him indicates such is warranted

My money is that HJ is handling his recruitment poorly.

He lives 3 hours away, I think if he really wanted to be at ND he would have made that 3 hour trip much more often

Dude, I know he is. My comment was an either or statement / observation followed by the question... What positive is Hunter Johnson getting out of this reporting? It's not a rhetorical question. Maybe someone has a different view on why this is good for HJ(?)

That is all.

I believe his next visit will be his 8th or so before his junior year of high school. Something like that. Not sure how much more someone his age needs to be on campus at this point of his career.

Do you want him to spend every weekend here? He's been to ND a ton of times. Not sure how much more you could expect him to be here.

He's been on campus a thousand times. Nothing new he needs to see this will all come down to relationships. Sanford couldn't have done a better job this comes down to BK vs Butch

He's been on campus like a million times. I don't know what you want from him? Should he just move into the dorms and follow BK around?

No doubt Coach Jones has been doing a great job recruiting Johnson but it seems the connection to Knoxville the Johnson family has is equally if not more important.

I've been led to believe that Wiltfong was the be all - end all in the biz. Either he is and he's accurately reporting HJ's continued vacillation or he's just an over reactive, click whore.

Both the Johnson family and Wiltfong need to understand that this plays out poorly in the new media. Wiltfong is very close to the Indy players, I know this from the Noah Burks' recruitment. Families need to use him, stay tight on their info, leak out what they want in the press. and not let him use them for clicks.

In the end they need to ask themselves, What positive has talking to Wiltfong done for them?

So he's a good dude. So he's doing his job. Ok. What positive does this do for Hunter's football career? does this make him look better or worse? Does that even matter?

Not to be a dick but your two posts above state that you have been led to believe Wiltfong who is the end all be all reporter might be a douche click -whoring internet profiteer painting a kid in a bad light. Your words. People are taking offense to it because he is quite the opposite. Maybe your word choice was not what you intended but that is how it came off. I along with many others here trust Wiltfong's info. He is absolutely one of the best and far from that skanky Oregon dude.

What's really happening is HJ and his family or whoever is responsible for his media interests is more than likely doing a rather poor job disseminating the info or HJ doesn't know what that he wants to do.

Maybe reel in the analysis a bit, you would be surprised who visits this site.

stadium size : UT
game crowd: UT
facilities: ND, but not by much
current state of program: ND, but Tenn is trending
degree: ND easily
difficulty of academics: UT easily (meaning UT is easier for athletes)
family: UT
QB situation: Even (UT composite 95 in 2016, ND composite 98 in 2015)
OL situation: ND clearly
General recruiting (relevant last two years): UT (247 comp)
NBC vs SEC: debatable

No matter what HJ commits to now. No one should feel comfortable.

We just need to win this year.

Yes he is... and Jones is doing a great job recruiting in general.

with the family's love for UT, not sure he has to do much neg recruiting. neg recruiting works on the feeble minded. do we really think the family is feeble minded?

Once again... because it seems you aren't getting it. It said either/ or. I didn't say both are true.

I have always followed what Wiltfong's said. My opinion is, he's the best in the business. I also know how close he is with the Indy players, I got that straight from Noah Burks' dad who had nothing but the best to say about Wiltfong btw. I don't know the story of HJ's recruitment and / or how / what they are communicating to Wiltfong. In the end, Wiltfong has a job to do and creating views is more important than journalistic professionalism. Also, his use of CB's when it is widely known that he speaks to HJ and his family constantly does carry with it a far greater weight than if any other 247 employee does.

My use of terms like click whore and click bait come from my professional career. I have been selling banner advertising with since the 90's and have owned numerous message boards. I use these terms freely in the non-pejorative.

My comment about not letting someone in the media profit from my kid is more of a cautionary warning in general than it is some damning accusation being thrown on Wiltfong. He's got a job to do so like I said originally, if he's reporting what they are telling him and it's on the record, well he's straight. I can tell you this, the people I talk to all have said that this isn't being handled very well. So if we agree that Wiltfong is doing his job correctly, then this situation is the result of as you said, poorly disseminated info or HJ simply not knowing what he wants. If he doesn't know what he wants, he probably shouldn't show his hand or at least be more cautious of what he's discarding.

That's all.

I understood the words you wrote as an either/or. I am not sure I see this in the extremes you inferred by saying either he is the best ever or he is profiteering off of info being provided to him. Fine dude. Semantics. Lol. When words like click bait or click whore get used I don't think "rainbows and gumdrops".

There have been rumblings on the Vol boards that HJ committed to the coaching staff over the phone on Saturday and will go public on Sunday.

Everyone knows that Vol fans are low-down dirty snitches, though, so take it for what it's worth.

Was that this Sunday?

A little snippet from Wiltfong...

Says that Notre Dame has definitely been negatively recruited, especially towards Kelly not being easy to play QB for and Sanford being gone soon. Said that Sanford spoke to him and has addressed those concerns well, and that Johnson's family says that Tennessee is not the ones negatively recruiting (which I don't believe).

This is all a bit of confirmation towards what we've been discussing in this thread, and his recruitment can probably go either way at this point.

I say just let it roll. Tenn is going to be a.500 team this year...schedule:

Bowling Green - W
Oklahoma- L
W Carolina - W
at Florida - L
Ark - L
GA - L
AL - L
KY - W
SC- L
North Texas - W
Mo - L
Vanderbilt - W

5-7. At best 6-6. TN wont look so great losing to everyone except the barely D1 teams.

Good info, thanks.

Negative recruiting is weak. Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't want to associate myself with people that do it.

Why do you think they will lose those games? I mean, they are likely much improved from last year when they finished 7-6.

I see 8-4 as a baseline, with the potential for 9-3.

Could be 7-5 if they drop one they shouldn't; could be 10-2 if Dobbs is the real deal.

Last years 6 wins were against:

Ark State
Utah State
Chattanooga
S. Carolina (in OT)
Kentucky
Vanderbilt

Largely the SC win was an upset, with SC coming off a loss the week before to Auburn.

8-4 as a baseline? That's very generous. I would say 5-7 is the baseline with potential to go 9-3.

Who do you have them beating????

I quoted your post with my changes in bold. I think they beat Florida, South Carolina and Mizzou, which are games you had them losing.

Florida is not great. They'll get better, but Tennessee is ahead right now. South Carolina is currently trending down, and I think Tennessee passes them this year. I think Mizzou comes back to earth for a year as well.

It is very generous, but the schedule isn't as bad as people think, and I'm a believer in Dobbs. If I'm a Tennessee fan, I'm upset if I don't see an 8-win season.

How are they ahead of an improving Florida team that beat them last season?
