If Love decides to stay, that gives us 15 returning starters next season. Would be interested to see how that compares to years past.

I've said it before, but if Love comes back (this assumes that everybody who should comes back does), then we win in Athens next year.

I hope he comes back but he's not gonna get any longer or faster and technically he's the best CB right now so why come back? His stock most likely won't go up. He'll just cost himself a year off his second or third contract... which at minimum will be over a million dollars (vet minimum) 6-7 years down the road.

The only reason he would come back would be for the complete collegiate experience of playing for Notre Dame, which would likely be out of love for his teammates and school with a personal understanding that he’ll never have this particular opportunity again. Knowing what he has demonstrated regarding his character, this is likely something he is weighing. It would not be a decision with regard to the NFL, but rather to Notre Dame.

I hope there are such romantic ideals at play here.

He gone.

Sometimes there are. You never know.

In this case we're talking about a high-character young man who appears serious about school and has a chance to be captain/leader of the team he grew up rooting for, with a legit shot at another trip to the playoffs. Some people would rather experience that than race off to be a backup corner on some middling NFL team. Pro ball will likely still be there a year from now.

If it's both speed and size...

Wouldn't he already physically plateaued?
Meaning, his draft stock potential has plateaued?

Therefore, it appears, there's not a huge advantage for him to "push for the 1st round grade" if they'll never give it to him anyway.

I think this is correct unless he thinks a speed coach can shave a tenth off his 40 time.

Per Sampson, Julian received a 2nd Round grade with the possibility of going even “lower.” Frustrating to hear for him, but creates a slim chance that he might return next year.

That's really surprising considering he's been one of the best DB's in the country since his freshman year. Maybe because he's a little undersized but man is he good!

Teams will regret not grabbing him earlier. He is a sound technician and he has enough athleticism to work at corner and nickel.

And he'll never be an off-the-field problem.

I am going to go back to the interview that was held after the USC game where Julian and Drue were sitting together being interviewed. The admiration JL showed for Drue coming back for this season was what gave me a little hope he would return. Now, after this bit of news I think it's 70% he comes back...unless we win the natti then he gone...

Potential reasons for JL to come back for final season of eligibility:

1) Captaincy
2) (Assuming ND doesn't win it all this year) -- Shot at "something special" aka natty
3) Front runner for Jim Thorpe Award that was erroneously given to DeAndre Baker
4) Weaker CB class? (I don't know this, I'm just spit-balling)
5) Gets his elusive 6th star
6) Chance at higher grade

This!

I don't think anyone believes we would be in the CFP if Coney, Tranquil, and Tillery didn't come back this year. I hope Love and a few others realize the impact they can have on next year's team, too.

I wonder how the injury effects his NFL decision. If its bad enough that he can't work out for teams, his stock will probably drop even if he will be healthy by camp. It might also make him realize how fragile his career is and go to the NFL and make whatever money he can even if it might be lower than he would like to start.

Wasn't it a concussion?

Yeah, I posted that under the assumption it was a hamstring injury like they mentioned in the broadcast. Of course I should have known once they said it was a hamstring that it definitely was not a hamstring. Those announcers haven't gotten one thing right all night.

With Julian Love it was Clemson 10 ND 3 with their one TD coming on a bad run fit.

Without Julian Love it was 20-0 in a single quarter. Yikes.

Defense did well, all things considered. If Love doesn't leave the game, the scoreline would have been respectable.

But our offense doesn't belong on the same field as a team like Clemson. Always gonna get embarrassed with an OL ranked 100+ in ALY and a QB who can't throw deep.

So do you get rid of Quinn? Seems like he’d have to be on the chopping block.

I'm definitely a Quinn skeptic. After 5 years of consistent OL excellence (despite major draft attrition) under Hiestand, our ALY ranking went off a cliff in Quinn's 1st year. I had hoped it was coincidental, but coaching is the most obvious explanation.

Most of the hires from BK's coaching tree have been disasters, so...

Not disagreeing, but ND did lose 2 1st round draft picks to the NFL. I'd say next year will tell the tale.

We saw very little drop off in quality after losing Martin and Watt to the draft in 14, or Stanley a couple years later. Draft attrition wasn't a factor under Hiestand, but it suddenly is now under Quinn.

Or maybe we just don't have 1st round talent right now. (Having Bars would have been huge tonight) Doesn't have to be chalked up to draft attrition. Mike and Q were seniors. Not like we lost them early and were blind sided with needing to fill their gap.

Wasnt it reported after Harry left he didn't exactly put much focus on development of the whole group but on his 5/6 starters only? I think that would line up with having/not having high level of talent rolling through more than a large sudden decrease in coaching ability. (Harry was great so not denying there is some level of deficit to make up here)
