I'd bet it's past teammates upset that he left

More likely a Michigan fan still upset over the last two losses to ND. Doesn't really matter. The letter was a classless act attempting to tarnish the good name of an honorable young man. File the letter in the trash where it belongs and name Alohi Gilman one of next year's captains.

Ehhh this whole thing gives me a "fake" vibe, like so much other stuff I've seen on the Internet. I don't know anything about Gilman to make me think this isn't real, but the Internet has left me scarred.

Had the same thought. I don't know any vets who would boast about their status, call someone a coward, and refuse to disclose their names all in the same letter. Too much hypocrisy/ cognitive dissonance to be real.

So what's the endgame then? It was a butt hurt Georgia or Ohio State fan trying to troll Alohi Gilman?

No. More likely that Alohi drafted the letter himself, and then posted it on social media to drum up outrage/ sympathy for himself (which the last page of this thread is already full of). People do this sh!t all the time. There are whole subreddits dedicated to it.

Too many red flags about this for me to get exercised about it.

Yes. If anything, its probably another insane USC fan targeting another Polynesian with some completely inappropriate practical joke.

Why anyone believes that anything is real on the internet is totally beyond me. I've always thought that the highest and best use of Twitter would be to troll a key recruit from another school, while pretending to be a fan of that other school. "The fact that you are even THINKING of taking a visit to Ohio State, with their criminal coach, is a sure fire sign that you are NOT A MICHIGAN MAN."

But we do know they are young--they signed the letter with the obligatory exclamation point.

I don't know, man. Everything that I've seen and read about him, he doesn't strike me as the "attention whore" type. Seems like a quiet, but passionate, kid and a solid teammate.

Would be a lot of work to simply drum up attention for someone who already is receiving an awful lot of it after the season he had.

You see the thing with Rashan Gary where a "Clemson fan" left him a voicemail calling him a n*gger in the heat of his recruitment? That was a next level (and poorly executed) false flag attack.

To the truthers... I think it reads more crazy than fake. Are we going to demand the stamped envelope and handwriting samples? I've seen Navy fans say similar shit (though not as long form) on social media so it isn't that hard to believe. You'd be surprised how much "hate mail" athletes get... much of which is more wackadoodle than this.

I don't really care either way. It certainly doesn't change my opinion of Gilman. I'm very fortunate that Facebook was just getting off the ground while I was an undergrad, because who knows how much embarrassing bullsh!t I would have posted otherwise.

But you should always assume anything you see on social media is fake, and work from there. This might be real. It'd actually be more believable if it was a Tweet from some anonymous account than a typed letter. Can't be bothered to get all het up over it regardless.

Those "six veterans" can fuck right off. The Naval Academy will be just fine without Alohi. Not everyone who starts there finishes. They weren't making a new year's bowl with him. Anonymously writing a letter and shitting all over a 19 year old who had a change of heart is being a coward. Unbelievable that someone would do that.

Maybe this is the catalyst ND needs to get out of playing Navy every year.

The letter stinks of Michigan butthurt, or maybe Clemson trolls. I seriously doubt any servicemen were a part of that.

I will never believe Alohi did this. Been around him enough to see his true character.

I struggle to believe this is from anyone that knows anything about the service academies or how they operate. Unless it has changed recently, at the end of a student's sophomore year, they are presented with the choice of staying or leaving the academy. Leave anytime before the beginning of your junior year and you owe nothing. Leave anytime after the beginning of junior year but before graduation and you owe the US govt some serious cash. Hundreds of kids go through this same process every year and opt out.

That is exactly what I was talking about! Crazy.

Whoever its from isn't representative of his whole school or of all veterans, regardless of whether he wrote it sincerely or not.

One of the problems of the internet is that it makes every event seem like its local news.

I mean on the bright side, we have another year of elligibility going forward for him. But I wonder how much he could have made a difference for us against Georgia.... Not sure he would have been as much help against Miami

This is going to be a bit of ND trivia for years to come. I can't imagine there's ever been a Notre Dame football captain who has previously played against and beaten the team before.

ha ha, good call. Irish trivia nights in South Bend would be great for the football junkies.

Always find it odd when the high ranked sibling of current players seems to have interest elsewhere... (Not just an ND thing but we've have obvious cases recently)... makes one wonder what drives it all.

Gaining one Jaylon Smith is worth losing out on 10 lil Gilman brothers.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think our safeties will be better in 2020.

Alohi didn't live up to the hype in 2019, and I think an experieced Hamilton with two, Veteran ~4.9 star safeties next to him will be a significant improvement over the 2019 play.

I hope Alohi gets his chance, if nothing else he grinds out a ~5 year career playing ST and backup safety.

He reminds me some of #34 for the Vikings. Can't think of his name but guy who makes plays despite lack of size or being a great athlete.
