Always find it odd when the high ranked sibling of current players seems to have interest elsewhere... (Not just an ND thing but we've have obvious cases recently)... makes one wonder what drives it all.

Wanting to make their own mark without walking in the shadow of the older sibling or throwing shade on the other's achievements.

It was widely thought that Grant Irons would follow the family path to Michigan. He chose to blaze his own trail.

Lacks ideal size, do not want back

I'd like to have him back, but I don't get what he'd gain by sticking around.

He's not going to get taller and he's not going to get more athletic to rank among the elite safeties in his draft class. If he returned and put together a better season than this past one, it wouldn't really appreciably improve his stock. Unless he just wants to have fun playing college ball, he may as well go.

Hope he gets drafted and kills it. Love this young man.

He better gets drafted. He’s got one of the biggest drives I’ve seen out of a player. He’s got so much heart for the game. Teams would be stupid to not take him

This is terrible news! I really wish we could have kept him around 1 more.

He's earned it. Transferred, sat out a full year despite throngs of other players gaming the NCAA and avoiding the year on the bench. Went on to start for us and was an important part of the defense the last few years. I hope he tears it up at the next level.

Hopefully he can make some money playing ball. What an exceptional addition he was to this team.

Good luck to him. I would have stayed around another year. I am betting 90 of players who go to the NFL end up their careers with more seasons left in their body. Expire your college eligibility then do your 3 years of sitting around in the NFL. Josh Adams would come back now if he could.

He was great, and could do quite well at the next level. I’m glad he was at Notre Dame for the time he was.
Ironic that Trump is undoing the ban on service academy players going pro just as Gilman - who only came to Notre Dame because of that ban in the first place - wraps up his college career.

In almost all cases I agree with you that guys should stay. Most are better served that way. And unless you’re an early-round pick, the NFL sucks.
But in this case, Gilman isn’t getting any bigger or faster - he is who he is, draft-wise. He has his degree. He also already did a PG year between high school and college, so he’s old. And the guy transferred from Navy to Notre Dame for the express purpose of playing in the NFL because he couldn’t at Navy.
It’s hard to argue he should stay.

One of my favorite players ever. Great young man that I will miss seeing on the field. Hope he kills it at the next level.

He might not get bigger or faster but he could get better. Plus just have another year of chasing the national title dream and just generally enjoying how awesome it must be to be a Notre Dame football player.

The NCAA should do a comprehensive study of players who leave for the NFL with eligbility left at a point in time (maybe 4 years after they declare).
Where are they now - what would they do different?

This guy will 100% get paid to play football. I hope he makes as much $$$ as possible even if it's as an Eskimo or a Viper.

He brought a nasty to the safety position that we hadn’t seen in a loooong time. I think he could have himself a nice career if he can really bulk up.

I’d have loved to see him stay, but I don’t think another year at ND would have really benefited him as an NFL prospect. He isn’t getting bigger or anything.

Good luck to him! Make that money, Alohi.

I've read this silly comment a few times In this thread. It's just wrong. In my humble opinion.

He’s going to get taller by staying at Notre Dame? You have a weird opinion, but OK.

I agree it was a mistake on the part of the NCAA for not giving him that immediate eligibility but I think the silly season sort of started the year after he was denied right?
The Justin Field one wasn't the start. Maybe that home sickness one from the WR who went from Cal to Georgia.

TBH, he probably isn't going to get bigger where it would be a noticeable difference, but I do hope he has a great career at the next level. He brought a toughness that rubbed off on the younger kids.

The average heart weighs 8-10 ounces. Just about right for him.

Tell a guy like Spud Webb size matters...
I just wish he was coming back. I'll cheer him on wherever he ends up.
The NFL has changed so much.

I wish he was coming back too. And maybe he could put on another 5 or 10 pounds of muscle. But he’s pretty physically mature as it is - remember he did a PG year so he’s already a year older than most true seniors.
I think the NFL will probably use him up and spit him out within two or three years like it does most fringe players. But if he wants to start that process - and get paid - sooner than later I can’t really blame him. Hopefully he’s smart enough to take their money while he can and quit while he still has his health.
Our team would be better next year with him on it but Alohi more than held up his end of the deal. God bless and good luck.

I think he should have came back his biggest weakness this year was trying to strip the ball instead of going for the tackle. At the same time we will be deep at safety and I’m interested in seeing what the ohio state transfer and houston can do along side hamilton
