I forgot how bad the talent drop off is between men and women's basketball.

This is bad.

Not any less enjoyable. Unfortunately, this is just a really bad game to step into. We're watching a terribly mismatched game, with an ND team out of sorts against a giant, confident UConn. Personally, I like both men and women's basketball, but it's a process of accepting both for what they are. The men's game can reflect selfishness at times, whereas women tend to focus more on team fundamentals to make up for that lack of athleticism. Overall, this season has been great to watch as an ND women's fan. Though it's disappointing to see it go down like this, I've grown to respect the growth and will keep watching.

You can't honestly expect women to be as good as men in about any sports. The Irish are way better then they are showing tonight. They usually score 80 a game and shot over 50%. Not tonight I guess.

Damn shame Achonwa got hurt. Would have been a dogfight with her.

Haha, are you Chase Hounshell, WakeUpEchoes?

As BGIF said, congrats to Uconn and a great season for the Irish. Thanks to the seniors, especially Kayla McBride, for all their sacrifice and desire all season. Great squad that played with a lot of passion night in and night out. For the future, hopefully we build more interior depth. Reimer needs to improve on her calisthenics, but the talent is there. Tough loss.

There...I lost the last of my VBucks on the game. Feel cleansed. Too many VBucks really isn't good for you.

Does anyone actually give a shit about this? I just went on ESPN.com and it was the front page! lol

What a world we live in. Was the game on TV?

Not the final score and Uconn celebration, but the game yes. Not sure what you mean, so I'll refrain from challenging your point...

I tried watching, but I just couldn't keep it on. The majority of the girls don't even jump for rebounds.

I watched a decent portion of it. It was on ESPN. I mean, first time two teams were undefeated heading into championship sparked my interest. Also the beef between Muffet and Geno. But honestly, I turned it off once the deficit got to 18 in the second half.

Did you watch the game against Maryland? It was a different story that night.

ND looked soft tonight, and much of that was to Uconn's credit, but this was far from their best performance, just from an effort standpoint alone.

Great season for the Irish women's team. Didn't end the way they had hoped, but still a tremendous team and effort.

There is something to be said about the power of positive thinking, however, much like the football championship game against Alabama, this women's basketball team's effort was an embarrassment for Notre Dame.

I wasn't referring to just ND. Even the giant UConn girls would just raise their hands up and grab rebounds without jumping. Most WBB games remind me of two really, really good boys middle school teams playing each other.

Really? Go 38-1 and it's an embarrassment? What is good enough for you people... would you rather not make the finals?

It boils back down to the BCS discussion a few months ago. Would you rather go to a mid-tier bowl and win or lose in a BCS bowl? BCS bowl for days.

I've tried a few times now to articulate exactly how I feel about the people who consider this an "embarrassment", and I just can't come up with the right words. Disappointing end? Sure. Does it hurt? Of course. Embarrassing? Just don't post.

We played a team with a girl that is quite possibly the most revolutionary player to the women's game since Cheryl Swoops. We played a team with a combination of size/speed the women's game his probably never seen without our Senior Captain (and Ace's absence was apparent from the opening tip. Last year in our wins vs. UConn, she was great in creating transition opportunities. Having a big make Dolson run up and down the court was a weakness we exploited).

In any case, now, we just need to pray that A'ja Wilson doesn't select UConn (6'5" #1 player in the country). With the additions of Westbeld, Turner, and a year for our current bigs, our depth should improve on the interior. Allen is going to have to score next year.

We could be very good next year again. But UNC is going to be REAL good. And if UConn gets Wilson, they should just call off the next 2 years until Stewart graduates.

Congratulations are due, and in abundance, for our girls and Coach Muffet. Anyone who doesn't get that is, frankly, a jerk.

As I mentioned in the Brey thread, elite basketball teams have two superior elements which they MUST have to win championships: error-free tough-minded guard play and board-dominant bigs. THEN you can add your great wings, shutdown defense etc. Connecticut was built exactly at the essentials; Notre Dame was not. {this isn't Muffet's fault, as there are very few dominant bigs in the country, and Connecticut [like a certain southern football school] gets its pick, and those who are left often can't get into ND}.

The loss of Achonwa hurt badly, as she was our best chance to ameliorate the inequality at the boards. Even with her, three is more than one.

On another issue, I have in minor fashion helped coach girls teams. Most girl basketball players can't jump. {however note that our Jewel Loyd was the premier jumper on the court}. They are built with a natural deficit in this regard, but could maximize their potentials a lot more than what is done. Note that almost every girl playing college volleyball CAN jump. The contrast is astonishing to watch both sets of athletes side-by-side. Why is this? Volleyball girls practice jumping all the time. Basketball girls don't. It's not very mysterious. Our BBall girls don't effectively jump because they not only don't really do it a lot, but they [amazingly] don't know how to do it properly --- LOTS of guy BBallers don't either, weirdly.

For those who don't want to think this through, and prefer to blame the coaching staff, well, one thing to consider is that in volleyball two-thirds of the essential physical action involves spiking or blocking [i.e. jumping]. Huge amounts of practice time is right on that talent. In basketball there is nowhere near that emphasis. Practice time is short. Most of it is forced to be dedicated to other mental processes and other skills [especially shooting, running, and team organization.]

Bottomline: given our rebounding and paint-defense inequality, plus the loss of Queen Nathalie, we probably played about as one could expect ... this time. That is NO reason to bad-mouth this glorious team.

Great points OMM. I was thinking the same thing last night how nobody on the court really got of the ground at all which made it impossible to a team that much taller/bigger. In boys ball, a help defender can neutralize a bigger taller offensive player much more effectively b/c they have 30"+ verts to neutralize the height advantage. One defender applies pressure to prevent the offensive player from getting substantially off the ground while the help defender can set up to jump and block the shot.

Maybe we need to recruit a few volleyball players to do nothing but rebound and block shots. Is it possible there are few bigs to pick from b/c they gravitate toward volleyball? Britney Griner type athleticism probably isn't as uncommon in volleyball as it is in basketball. I don't care if they are an offensive liability, shutting down the paint on defense makes it more than worthwhile.

Man, that was tough to watch, huh? I don't know how you beat that UConn team. Dolson did whatever she wanted in the post and Breanna Stewart did whatever she wanted all over the court. You just pick your poison with them ... you can pack it in to try to clog things up for UConn's bigs, and let Mosqueeda-Lewis rain threes; or you can go man and let Dolson and Stewart rip you up at the basket, not just one-on-one but with cuts and passes.

The women's game is so different because the players aren't as long but the court is. It's so much easier to find open space. When you have players who are skilled finishers, especially with size like Stewart and Dolson, and skilled passers, you will be tough to stop.

Honestly, I can't remember ever watching a player like Stewart who looks so unimpressive (she looks like the girl I knew in middle school who drew dragons in the corner) but is so dominant. Blocking shots, stroking threes, going to the basket ... she's like the Kevin Durant of NCAAW hoops. Really, more like LeBron, without the bulk. All over the court.

And on defense, UConn just dominated the game with their length and athleticism in the frontcourt. We really struggled to penetrate effectively. We had to play a perfect game and really shoot the lights out from the outside, and we just didn't quite have it.

But great season for the Irish and I look forward to seeing them do it again next year.

Great season for the ladies. Those UConn broads are tough.
Losing Achonwa didn't help.
