Former Cleveland Browns and Green Bay Packers quarterback Deshone Kizer worked out Monday with the Tennessee Titans, according to a list shared by CBS Sportsline's Allan Bell. The group included former Denver Broncos and New York Jets quarterback Trevor Siemian.
Kizer, 24, takes aim at a new opportunity after spending the 2019 season in Oakland with the Raiders. After his Sept. 1 signing, Kizer did not appear in a game and was waived May 5.
Kizer spent the 2019 preseason with the Packers before his Aug. 31, 2019, release among the final roster cuts. He backed up Packers veteran Aaron Rodgers in 2018, making three appearances and completing 20 of 42 passes (47.6 percent) for 187 yards with zero touchdowns to two interceptions.
The Packers added Kizer in a March 14, 2018, trade that sent safety Damarious Randall to the Browns. The teams also swapped fourth- and fifth-round draft picks.
"I truly believe that I'm on an upward trajectory," Kizer said July 3, 2019, according to PackersNew.com. "I'm playing the best football I've ever played. I'm not turning the ball over as much anymore. I'm seeing the game. I'm learning so much from Aaron. I'm learning so much from the systems that I've been in that I truly believe that at any point in time as we speak, if I can continue to stay on the path that I'm on right now, that I can get back to the path that I thought that I was on as a rookie starting in this league."
Selected by the Browns with the No. 52 overall pick in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Kizer inked a four-year deal for $4.94 million. The rookie contract included $2.42 million guaranteed and a $1.73 signing bonus.
Kizer started 15 games as a rookie for the Browns' winless 2017 season, going 0-15. The 6-foot-4, 235-pounder completed 255 of 476 passes (53.6 percent) passes for 2,894 yards and 11 touchdowns to 22 interceptions.
A two-year starter at Notre Dame, Kizer went to the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and ran a 40-yard-dash time of 4.83 seconds. He rounded out his workout with measurements that included 9 7/8-inch hands.
Kizer declared for the 2017 draft after his junior season with the Fighting Irish in 2016. In 12 games, Kizer completed 212 of 361 passes (58.7 percent) for 2,925 yards and 26 touchdowns to nine interceptions. As a sophomore during the 2015 campaign, Kizer completed 210 of 334 passes (62.9 percent) for 2,880 yards and 21 touchdowns to 10 interceptions.
Entering the 2017 draft, NFL.com analyst Lance Zierlein was unsure of Kizer's overall ceiling. In a scouting report on the combine profile for Kizer, Zierlein made a point about the former Notre Dame signal-caller's inconsistencies.
"The aforementioned traits often land a quarterback in the first round, but Kizer's second-half drop in production combined with inconsistent decision-making and accuracy should be a speed bump for teams ready to jump in head-first on the traits," Zierlein said. "Kizer has the ability to become a quality starter, but has to improve his ball placement and field vision first."
A four-star recruit, Kizer took his talents from Toledo (Ohio) Central Catholic to the Irish in South Bend, Indiana. He was the 247Sports Composite's No. 242 overall prospect, No. 14 pro-style quarterback and No. 10 player in Ohio for the 2014 recruiting class.
