.... says a lot about what Coach has had to work with over all these years. Kizer was the best we had.

Is it worth wondering how he would have gone in 2017 if he came back? We might have beat Georgia...

That 2017 team with Kizer at QB would have straight up murdered every team on the schedule. Yes, even Miami.

People underestimate the impact Wimbush had on the offense, particularly the red zone offense, until his passing really unraveled in November. If we had that sort of red zone efficiency in 2016 maybe we wouldn't have lost so many close games.

Or a better d coordinator that actually tried to recruit? Or just named Kizer the starter from the get go. That 2016 season was 100% on the coaching staff.

I'm still of the opinion that Kelly does well with new quarterbacks, getting them up to speed and comfortable with the basics. As soon as the playbook opens up in Year 2, QBs start regressing ala Kizer, Rees, Crist, etc. Maybe Book will buck the trend since he's going into year 3 as a starter and he turned a corner last season.

So Kelly just inherited Kizer? He didn’t recruit him or coach him prior to Kizer being the starting QB? He didn’t coach him while he was the starting QB?

He’s the freaking head coach at Notre Dame and you’re treating him like he’s Rick Moranis in Little Giants. Kizer was his recruit! If Kizer sucks and he’s the best QB we’ve had during the Kelly era, then that speaks VOLUMES to his QB development.

You gotta get off Kelly’s jock...

Kizer plus Stepherson in that game and I definitely think that is a win.

No idea what happens at Miami, but it would have been better than Wimbush.

Kizer + Good team Health = play-offs.

Championship? Probably not.

Kizer, in my opinion, was the only Kelly QB good enough to win a playoff game, playing like his normal performance would indicate. We've had other erratically performing super athletes like Golson who just might make a miracle, but consistent QBing ... that was Kizer.

To be fair, Kizer in 2015 benefited from one of the best offensive lines we've ever put together, in addition to a strong running game behind Procise and Will Fuller to throw to (Among other targets). Kizer was anything but consistent in 2016 though. Combined with a struggling running game and inexperienced receivers he didn't succeed nearly as much. I don't know how well you can rate Kizer given how different both seasons were.

The offense was not the primary reason ND lost so many games in 2016.

Kizer felt he had to carry the load of the team on his shoulders and after a while he shoulders collapsed from the weight.

This kind of gets back to my earlier comment about QBs under Kelly in year 2. Some of these QBs look like world beaters when the offense is dumbed down and their responsibilities are low, but when the playbook gets opened up and more is put on their shoulders they often crumble.
