He plays like a LB with a Safetys body. Dont really see him fitting into any position on the ND defense. Def could bolster spteams coverage, but I dont see how ND would benefit him on field at all.

Some great hot takes in this thread. Whether it's around this one when the profile was put up or a year ago when there was discussion about him deciding about leaving or staying.

I don't blame TP too much at the time. Now, his body is totally different. He's the second heaviest/biggest LB behind Coney.

What up Wooly? So I watched his film and here is my amateur opinion. He is raw but played well in all 3 facets of the game. Good speed, bump to exceptional for a MLB if he can maintain it with added weight. Nice hands, should be able to make big plays on passing downs. Thumper, when he made the hits, bad guy go boom. Will be a great special teams player from day one, should be in the two deep by year three on campus with the personnel we will have on hand at the time maybe even start next to Deeb. I am all for it if he wants in.

Here's one...

I am going to miss Drue dearly. He is a true "ND guy." Hard to replace not only his productivity but leadership and knowledge of the game.

Hope he kills it at the next level. Could be a steal in the mid to late rounds, assuming that's where his draft stock still is.

What a trip down memory lane to go back and re-read this thread. I went back to the first few pages, and I totally forgot about how some old clown wrote a hit piece because he was mad that ND offered Drue a scholarship while he was a verbal to Purdue.

It looks like multiple of us wrote (or called) to express displeasure at his article. I sent the writer an email that said, in part --
...you simply don't have the talent to do this. I would be embarrassed to pen something like this article on an anonymous message board, much less a newspaper's website. My unrealistic hope is that you read this and realize that you should quit writing professionally... but maybe... just maybe... you will read about half this email, and understand that you screwed the pooch on this one and try to do better the next time.

He wrote me back thanking me for the "thoughts (and the condescension)."

I just googled him to see what he's doing now. Turns out that a year later almost to the day he quit his job and deleted his Twitter.

The Universe 1, Hack Writers 0. And Drue Tranquill is about to cap off a storied career at ND, all because evil Brian Kelly thought it was morally acceptable to offer someone a scholarship that was verbally committed elsewhere.

I could see Drue making some noise at the Senior Bowl and making a move up draft boards. He just reminds me of the kind of guy that would go to the event completely locked in and show out.

One of my favorite things about this board is our ability to go back and read through player profiles to see how various predictions panned out.

Drue is the next Luke KEulely (the Carolina via BC LB). He is a tackling machine with a smell for the ball and game. I think both he and Coney could add a step which might mean 7 pounds.

He is a shining example of what a 3 star recruit can become when put in the ND system. A shining example of the RKGs we look for and need. We have more than one of them.

Drue is going to be an asset on an NFL roster. It has been a pleasure to watch him develop as a player and leader. I’m going to miss him, he’s been one of my favorite players.

And how did Koon respond?

For the past week I've felt maybe his best fit would be ILB. Does anyone else think he could grow into fitting the physical profile the staff looks for? He has the height, right? How much weight does he need to gain? He's 210 right now, so 25-30lbs?

That's where I'm at. As a Safety prospect, I'd pass on him. But as a LB project, he's very intriguing.

Whiskey just bringing up reading the thread back so people would see this.

It is fun looking back. My overall take was pretty standard for the board. Ambivalent for him at safety, but an RKG from Indiana that runs a 4.5 40, and seems to love the game is worth the "risk."

But my view on Drew as a LB was clearly influenced by years of guys like Brian Smith and Carlo Calabrese.

Jaylen Johnson > Drue Tranquill as a MLB prospect IMO. Johnson is already 6'3" 235lb.

We have plenty of big guys on our roster. Seems like we need some guys who can run around.

I got a chuckle out of most of our posters handing out praise for others and their takes on Drue back in the day, and here is Koon stroking his own...lol

I've actually seen this a few others places where Drue is either ranked higher on a board than Coney or is drafted before Coney in a mock. so yeah this wouldn't surprise me at all. Drue is very versatile. While Coney is pretty much regulated as a Mike/Will.

I don’t really see it happening. Dru’s Injury history is going to really scare a few teams and rightfully so. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go 5th or later because of it. I personally think Coney is going to get drafted on the second day.

Fair point regarding medical history for Drue. The two reconstructed knees could be big concern. Medical exam at combine could be huge for Drue. But, if he comes out of the medical clean it’s very possible he gets picked before Coney.
