'11 SC QB Everett Golson (FSU transfer)

It's insane that a player can lead the Irish on a game-winning drive against a ranked SEC team and then the next week people basically cheer transfer rumors.

So long!

Going into a make-or-break season--which 2015 definitely is--with quarterbacks totaling one game of starting experience is not exactly a good thing. You shouldn't be so cheerful.

Zaire, Kizer, and Wimbush. One start and two freshmen. That's not good depth for a offensive strategy that can get quarterbacks hurt in a hurry.

Having Golson for 2015, even as a backup, could be vital for a successful season.

Sorry, just realized this was already posted. Tried to delete but didn't see an option.

I like Golson and don't mind him competing for the job... I would hate to have him transfer

I agree but if he doesn't wanna be here then why not move on and get excited about Zaire?

There aren't set-in-stone standards for undergraduate admission. An undergrad admit generally has an ACT above 30, is in the top 10% of his class, etc, but there's nothing written that says an admit MUST have an ACT above 30 or be in the top 10% of his class. The grad school admissions guidelines flat-out say "...must have a B average in undergraduate major courses."

And if we applied the "general" criteria to the football team we would wouldn't lose anyone? I don't think so.

So my point remains. ND sacrifices some academic integrity with these recruits from the get go in hopes for on field performance leading to increased revenue. Why would they suddenly put their for down for the kids final year of eligibility when he already has his ND degree.

Is the university really going to come out and say our starting qb with his degree can't get into grad school?!?!

I doubt it.

I think it's too late. His opportunity cost is too high at ND. East Carolina runs an up tempo spread and Carden is done. Marshall is losing Cato. Both or those QB's are undersized in the 6-0 to 6-2 range. What about WVU with Clint Trickett leaving?

I think he's gone. I still hope he stays.

I also hope he stays, but the odds of a mutually beneficial outcome seem very low here. Eligibility- and admissions-related concerns aside, Golson will have to beat Zaire outright and learn how to execute an option competently. So unless spring camp goes very well for him, the smart move is probably to play elsewhere.

I agree with this. I'm sure we would be unable to verify but wasn't there friction in the locker room with him?

Either way, I believe its time for a new direction and I believe in Zaire. And Kizer needs the reps.

Buster brings up a good counter but because we haven't seen Kizer play doesn't mean he can't be as good, if not better then EG.

Without a doubt. I know I'd take advantage of the grad transfer option if I were him. Being a selfish fan, I hope he stays. In his shoes, i'd be gone if I had even a sniff of getting drafted in the later rounds vs. the possibility of not playing or waiting on an injury to see the field.

There is no perfect way for this end. To be honest, I'd rather have Stanley go early than Golson leave.

Again, with respect, there seems to be a lot of street-corner commentary here about admissions to college vs admission to graduate school. I've been associated with three academic institutions at the grad level and all of them have much stricter criteria for admission than just getting into undergraduate. Some folks don't seem to know that at the grad school level, departments are run as little fiefdoms and do not simply cave in to the general administration particularly on things like admissions and hirings.

So, my puzzlement still stands. IF an undergrad had a "decent" classroom record [i.e. "B" or better] then I could imagine some sort of compromise being talked out between the department and the athletic department [or whomever] to allow "soft" admissions to a beginning Master's path. But it would greatly surprise me if the same thing was just ho-hum for a "C" student, especially one with an academic [temporary] dismissal on his record.

This interests me from my academic [prof's] background. I'm just curious if ND has "created" some kind of semi-phoney pipeline with some departments to take graduated athletes whether they sort-of stunk the classroom up or not.

Again, it has been a universal experience for me that just graduating does NOT make you acceptable for Master's programs.

Golson can throw the ball much better than Zaire. We need him back. Zaire has good arm strength and good accuracy in the short and intermediate game. However, he has no touch whatsoever and cannot throw the deep ball at all. I think it would be devastating if Golson were to leave.

Ehhh. Don't really consider it devastating to lose a QB who turns it over a lot in big games, shuts down with the slightest bit of adversity, and fails to be a leader. Even if we took our bumps without him as the backup, I think we will be better off in the long run with Zaire being the man in 2014.

I'm on the corner of Thompson and 31. Can anyone find me a case of an ND athlete, who had a year of eligibility remaining, graduated from ND, and didn't get their 5th year solely because of grad school admissions?

I'll wait, but its cold tonight on the street corner.

EDIT: another thought hit me while I was standing here. We have a very large group of 5th year eligibles this time around. Are we really to believe not one of them is a below B average student? Possible, but doubtful.

He can throw far enough:

Not everyone needs to be as talented as Jamarcus Russell. We don't need Golson.

U really want to put all ur eggs in the Zaire basket(~50 combined plays in his career) and wimbush/kizer as backup (no plays combined)?

Zaire looked great running the ball and good throwing on the short/intermediate passing in a 1 game setting that was perfectly gameplanned.

Even if he was to win the job outright this is still a better team with Golson on it.

I don't want to be in same situation as Rees' senior year when we didn't "need" Keil either.

I'm still rooting for a Leak/Tebow situation. Imagine having to game plan for both of these guys...

I'm surprised people still want to put any eggs in the Golson basket. People point to amazing "Heisman moments" he's had, like the final drive against Stanford this year, but they forget that he played like crap for most of that game. Same thing with the Pitt comeback in 2012. The guy is not a QB, he's an athlete. He makes great plays when they break down, but Zaire can run a better offense overall imo. He can run the read option, he's a leader, and his arm ain't that shabby. Zaire goes through his progressions better too, imo.

Even if EG only plays 10-15 downs a game it still forces the opponent to prepare for two QBs and like others have noted he brings 1.5 years of starting experience and gives us a quality backup if something happens to MZ.

Like I said, much more so touching base with schools to see what options MIGHT be out there IF it came to it.

Why would Golson want stay for 10-15 plays a game?

Let's pump the brakes here a bit. MZ has played 6 quarters of football, most likely with a limited play book. Losing Golson would be fairly concerning. I am glad MZ has "looked " better compared to Golson but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

And you know Kelly's not going to tip his hand. Not saying the players couldn't figure it out or at least have a good guess on their own, but I bet it's very 50/50 after spring.

Probably people who don't feel comfortable putting their eggs in the MZ basket considering he has only played 6 quarters....

Ulu - I see points for both baskets being worthy of eggs.

Which is probably why they both got plays in the bowl game.

We know Golson's weaknesses. We haven't seen enough of Zaire to know his yet.

I like Golson's long ball and freestyle (broken play make something happen).

I like Zaire's size, mentality, sure-handedness (help me dshans).

I like the offensive style with Zaire best a far as our run game is concerned. But if we had a D second half of season we're talking playoffs.

I'd go farther than that. Golson's return would likely raise our 2015 floor significantly, so Kelly has a strong incentive to be as publicly pro-Golson as he can get away with.

As I wrote earlier, I expect him to return. Russell Wilson excepted, QB transfer stories rarely end happily. The most likely path to the NFL for him still runs through ND. But unless his option reads and ball security improve tremendously, I think he's going to have a hard time holding off Zaire. Which would be a pretty sad and anti-climatic ending to a remarkable college career.

...but starting for LSU would not be a bad ending for him. I would almost argue that would be a better move for him especially since he would have his ND degree in hand.

A clear-headed EG at LSU next season could very well have the same effect Russell Wilson did on Wisconsin. I'm not comparing the two QBs, but the situations are quite similar.
