Sadly, I am about the same ages of these guys, and I had to look up what this phrase meant. I am not a cool fellow.

Apparently, it means to ignore someone and not give the respect or recognition they deserve.

Example: Don't sleep on Daniel Smith. He has all the tools and has been working hard all off-season to be a factor in more than just the run game.

Your example is correct in its usage but he is saying they sleep or sleeping because it is old news. Like you missed something because you were sleeping when it happened.

Oh man that's sad. Keep your head up Dan Smith. Might not have caught many balls but he worked hard and is tough as nail. He is Irish through and through.

Man, you hate to see a player's career end with a mid-season injury. He was a great glue guy who worked hard, did the dirty work and set an example for the younger receivers. Kelly said in his teleconference today that the locker room was emotional at halftime over Smith's injury and Kelly gave the guys something of a win-one-for-the-gipper speech -- and they really responded. Danny will really be missed.

Hope to see C.J. Prosise step into the void here. Physically he seems like the likeliest candidate to step into Daniel Smith's role as a WR/H-back. Him or Onwualu.
