Weird to say this about a guy who eventually transferred but real ND guy. Really feels like he maximized his opportunities and gave us some real highlight moments over the course of his career. Happy to see him leave with a degree and move on to maximize his opportunties.

Wonder if he’ll play receiver or RB for the Cavs? He’d likely be the best RB on their roster.

That's not the question. If someone told you Chris Tyree was playing in the NFL, would you think RB or WR? There is no possible world he's an NFL RB. With a big year at Virginia, he could earn a late round draftpick and pick up some paychecks. I wouldn't bet on it and I wouldn't bet against it. It exists in the world of possibility.

He's got good speed, if he puts together a decent season as a focused receivers he'll get on somewhere at the next level.

Agree to disagree. I think you could argue that he would've been better off staying at RB. He's such a tiny receiving target

I'm 5'9". Not many good running backs that short either, though certainly more.

Rondale Moore is 5-7. For instance. Tyreke Hill is 5-10. He doesn't suck. I don't know, there have been lots of smaller receivers.
Either way, whether he's called a WR or an RB, Tyree's shot at the NFL is as a slot receiver or a swing back, maybe a returner. A hybrid guy you get the ball to in space. He's got a chance. We'll see.

The deck is stacked against you when you're that small. You have to be able to make up for it somehow, usually with great balance and suddenness when changing direction. These aren't exactly Chris' strengths. His skills unfortunately just don't translate that well to the football field, regardless of the position. It's the offseason so I'm mostly bored, but I don't think it's as clear cut that his best shot at the NFL is at WR

He averaged 18.6 yds/rec this year. I don’t care what height or weight he is. He created big plays.

And obviously circumstances matter here but for perspective that number is higher than any individual season from Shepherd, Mitchell, Collins, or Kelly. Including when those guys were young and had more specialized roles.

So, does he have what it takes to be a #1? Unlikely. But you are getting compensated for his place in the offense with big plays.

He basically averaged 2 catches and 40 yards per game. There's a reason he was going to lose playing time next year, and I doubt any of us is that upset that he left

On the field I generally agree with you. He's fine but not meaningfully better than other options at his position.
Off the field, we have a striking lack of experience and leadership coming back on the offensive side of the ball (I'm sure our rental QB will be named a captain but I mean people who've been in the program for awhile) and Tyree would have brought a lot to the table in that regard. That, we'll miss. Thomas is the only other offensive player who fills that role, maybe Evans.

If we get a couple of the transfer WRs we're targeting, we've upgraded the talent compared to last year, and I value that more than leadership. This is especially true at ND where there are plenty of good kids who know how to conduct themselves.

The players they’re targeting were captains at their previous school, too.

No way. He struggled running the ball between the tackles compared to Diggs and Estime last season. Slot receivers don't need a lot of height, they're not fighting for jump balls and lots of fades like outside guys. They're running underneath routes, crossing patterns, basically using their speed to get open on a Nickel or other 3rd CB. Slot receiver was probably always Tyree's best spot, he gets to utilize his speed in space to make plays.

I think we'll be okay without him next season, but it's hard saying we'll be better when we're losing our best receiver from this year. It may have been a struggle at times and a lot of injuries, but Tyree gave great effort and could make plays.
