'18 SC QB Sam Hartman (Notre Dame Transfer)

Something I’ve been thinking about heading into 2023:

For the first time in awhile, Notre Dame will have the advantage at the QB position in every game except USC (F Williams but he’s elite).

Also, ND may have the QB advantage vs. the rest of college football in general. Alabama, Ohio St, Georgia are all replacing very successful QBs. This will make things very interesting for the playoff race next year.

QB Advantage, RB advantage, and OL advantage. Our RB room will be top 3 deepest in the country we will have 5 guys who could start for most of the teams in the country

On one hand you have analysts that think Hartmann coming to ND puts ND squarely in the CFP conversation. They project that Tommy Rees will now open up the offense. That Rees will do a 100% about face on this run / TE oriented offense and go and spread out the ball with lots of down field targeting. That Hartman is one of the elite QBs in all of College Football. Quick release and sense of using his progressions.

On the other hand, other analysts see this as a bad fit. That Rees won't open up the offense. That Hartmann will have to go under center - something he is not used to doing. That Rees will not open up for down field targeting. That Hartmann is wasting this year in an offense not designed for him. That the ceiling is NY6 bowl - if that. In terms of Hartman, those 41 INTs show poor decision making. Something Rees and Freeman may not tolerate. He may lose out to Buchner.

While I think the second scenario is very pessimistic, I do wonder how much Rees is willing to adapt his conservative style of play for a proven, big-time passer.

Yes and he was hindered with Pyne because 90 percent of the time he only looked at his first option then either threw it away or ran

If Sam Hartman has this team headed towards a NY6 bowl he is not getting benched for Buchner.

I would imagine the offense doesnt change too much. A few reasons.

I think everyone here agrees Tommy's next stop as a play caller is likely the NFL. He will want to continue to show his ability and creativity as a play caller within an NFL scheme.

The only reason(s) that someone as good as Sam Hartman isnt moving on to the NFL at this point is not having "pro offense" film (not considering any NIL incentives, however he has been in college for a while, most guys would be fine with a degree and moving on to league even as a late pick or camp invitee).

Our offensive (and potentially defensive) roster's strengths and weakness should be efficient ball control with running the ball being the staple. Tommy and Freeman are smart enough to play to the roster strengths.

If Sam were to come here and Tommy suddenly is calling air raid I think it would go against the whole purpose of Sam's decision to stay in college and come to ND vs elsewhere.

I agree for the most part but ND was on the road, without Cam Hart, and if Drew Pyne doesn't fumble the RB exchange on the opening drive in the second half (a drive that was looking promising, as well) that whole game is different. Not making excuses for the L, but just saying that having the game in South Bend, under the lights and hopefully cold weather makes what was a pretty even game on the surface look better for our guys. Now you add a huge upgrade at QB with Hartman compared to Pyne?

Plus there might be some revenge to consider with the antics from Caleb Williams. Dude is a baller but he needs a big ol' slice of humble pie, and it would be nice if the Irish fed it to him. I'm not scared of USC in 2023, I'm expecting a helluva fight.

Rasputin does not expect Rees to go with an air raid style offense in 2023. Adding Hartman will benefit an already excellent running game. There was 0 respect for ND's deep pass threat in 2022. That won't be the case in 2023. Stack the box to stop the run and Hartman will beat you deep. Take away the deep threat and NDs running game will gash you. Rees is going to have some fun with his new toy.

Why would Tommy open up the offense? Keep running what we have been. Now there’s a guy that will take advantage of defenses loading the box. If they don’t load the box, we run over and through their souls.

Hop on AirBnb if you can get a decent sized group. I've had a lot of success booking a house with 10-15 people and it knocks the price down to less than $100/night and way more comfortable than a hotel.

Otherwise, yeah I've had to find places 45-60mins outside of South Bend to make it more affordable but it isn't ideal. The hotels are a nightmare around Michiana in the fall.

I used one of the local ND-specific rentals. We had five of us and they got us a house walking distance from campus w/o all the fees. Sadly, this was for the COVID year so I had to cancel but the owner was awesome and refunded everything.

Yeah, from what I gather Freeman and Rees have a good working relationship, but it's been said that Freeman leans towards running the ball and Rees wants to adapt to a stronger passing game like we've seen from Alabama the last several years.

Tommy Rees is dying to operate out of shotgun via 11 personnel as a base, and then build different personnel packages from there.

Hartman will give Rees an opportunity to show everyone just how good a play caller he is with a modern pro-style QB, and Rees will give Hartman an opportunity to show everyone he doesn't need the slow mesh to make good throws after disrupting the secondary's post-snap movement.

(Plus, Rees has already proven to be a really good play caller, imo. His work with Pyne's limitations, and somehow creating an effective motion-based RPO/power-run offense with a below-average athlete at QB was impressive, as was how he adapted it to Buchner's strengths for the Gator Bowl. Even if Hartman somehow doesn't win the job, and Buchner is the guy, the offense isn't necessarily in trouble all over again. The Pyne offense modified to Buchner could be lethal, as long as he's hitting 60% of this throws at least.)

More like a new and improved 2020 instead of 2015 lite imo, just don't have that dynamism anywhere. Bully ball like 2020 with a QB more willing to throw deep which will hopefully force the most talented teams we face to respect us and not key in on the run too much.

Tommy uses what’s available. I fully expect to see the playbook open up more but stay somewhat balanced. With Hartman Tommy can lean on one or the other if necessary.

I wonder how much of the playbook Hartman can absorb between now and next season? You'd think a decent chunk of it considering this is his 6th year and you don't have to worry about explaining coverages to him. You'd also think that Hartman has some plays that he'd like to run that Tommy can add to his playbook.

I'm also hoping for a lot less "check with me" from the sidelines this year.

I think the WR corp is the position that is best placed to take a massive step forward. There is talent, but it's been hampered by less than stellar QB play for years.

Then you add a guy like Sam Hartman who knows how to get the ball to his receivers. That's going to pay major dividends for the young talent at receiver. I'd expect a guy like Colzie or Merriweather to suddenly materialize into a major receiving threat.

That's what a high level QB does for your offense.

Yep. Bunch of guys with a year or two under their belt, but also something to prove. A QB who can deliver them the ball in all sorts of ways, and a running game that any defense will have to respect. I think our offense could be quite good next year.
