while searching for the boy, they have found 4 other gators as well...all have been killed thus far

Wonder if this is going to be the play from now on... killing them on site.

There were many times that we were in WDW and have seen alligators. Once while playing The Palm golf course and a few times they were in bodies of water at Animal Kingdom. Scary to even think about how many times we stayed at Caribbean Beach Resort and allowed the kids to play on the sandy beaches while we sat up to 20 feet away watching them play. Really feel for the kids on our upcoming trip in August (staying at Star Island and doing a non-Disney trip to Universal and Sea World). They're going to be watched like a hawk.

Just an awful story. Having grown up in Florida (even worked at Disney for a while) these things are pretty rare occurrences. It took me quite a long time after moving to Tennessee to realize every body of water was not occupied by gators. Can't even imagine how the parents are dealing with this.

This is about as disturbing as it gets for a parent. How do you get the image of your toddler being snatched to their death by a gator out of your head?

Honestly.

I can't think about it - it drives me nuts every time I do but I continue to do so. I'm going crazy. So sad.

It didn't even happen to me and I can't get the image out of my head. Absolutely heartbreaking.

A toddler shouldn't be playing in a body of water by himself, alligator

Appears that the dad was in sight of this all. I bet if you have kids that you watch them and never take your eyes off of them. I cant read 99 percent of your posts. Had to chime in on this one. You make some clown comments bro

While I agree, he has been known to make some interesting comments....this is Florida...and there are signs prohibiting swimming.
While one one hand I feel absolutely terrible for the family and the child...
There is certainly a degree of negligence on the part of the parents for even being in that water.
The park as well, if it doesn't specifically have signage there warning about alligators swimming in there.

Texted my friend this AM after seeing this story knowing they were at the Grand Floridian this week - he said they walked by minutes before it happened. Incredibly sad story. Anyone laying blame on the parents should be ashamed of themselves. Big difference between "no swimming" and "Beware of Gators" - you can bet those signs will change pretty quickly.

I have kids and it is impossible to stay on top of them 24/7. Helicopter parents or not, this dad was close enough to lay hands on the beast so he couldn't have been drinking eighty feet away or anything. Either way - freak accident and you have to feel miserable for that family.

This is so tragic. We are set to go there in December to stay at this resort. Sadly, there is fresh water all around this place.

I can think of worse. Imagine your child being run over not once, but twice, and people walk on past without providing assistance?

This is disturbing and hard to watch as a parent, so if you can't handle it I wouldn't watch it. I remember this happening shortly after my first was born, and it was hard to swallow:

Boy Taken By Gator at Walt Disney World

A small blessing in an otherwise tragic event.

I'm glad they received closure so quickly, but good grief. This is the kind of story that happened to complete strangers, and it still managed to ruin my day.

House of Mouse needs to be careful, their response seems to be "everyone knows there's always been alligators in Florida- that's why we don't put any 'BEWARE GATORS!' signs up"

To an extent, but where do you draw the line? I mean... It is Florida. There are tons of gators there and it common knowledge to anyone that has been there. There's also snakes, poisonous spiders and other dangerous animals. Is there responsibility to post signs everywhere about every dangerous animal in the area?

The reality is that the "no swimming" signs should be enough. They said this gator was six feet long, which isn't huge by gator standards. I absolutely feel for the family, but I also don't believe that the kid wasn't in the water. A gator that size usually aren't ones that would run up on shore, grab something that big, and drag it back into the water.

This is absurd. Disney can't control wild animals or people misbehaving around nature. If I go camping and get mauled by a black bear, I can't sue the state of Connecticut. If I go to the Grand Canyon and fall in, I can't sue the National Park Service. If I go in the ocean and get eaten by a shark, I can't sue the Coast Guard.

Of course you can't, you will be dead.

Was the boy found inside the alligator? I'm asking because there is a lady I work with that is trying to convince me that the alligator is just a cover up by the parents. She thinks the boy drowned while the parents weren't watching him and they used an alligator as an excuse. She read that the boy's body was found in the water and he didn't have any scratches on him. I think she's crazy.

The body was found "intact." I took that to mean he wasn't chewed up and eaten. I hadn't read anything about whether he was scratched.

nope it was found intact in the water. I believe the mother had some injuries from fighting the gator though..

Idk. I see it differently. This happened on private property so the resort has to have at least some responsibility for this. If a random kid walks into my backyard, falls into my pool and drowns then the parents can sue me. The resort can't just hide behind a "No Swimming Allowed" sign.

A pool isn't an alligator. If a random kid walks into your backyard and there also happens to be a bear in your backyard and the bear attacks the kid, that's no fault of yours.
