Does she have any background at all in anything remotely like this???

Yes - Twitter.

Apparently that's all you need nowadays. All this does is give more people the motivation to be more bombastic, more outlandish, and more everything so that they can be the next unfound 'talent'. Shit, the next President of the United (possibly) uses Twitter like Ms. Apple does, so why the hell not?

This.
It's a race to the bottom now. So few people value professionalism and actual intellect anymore, they just want to be entertained.

It took this to get you to that point? I stopped watching anything but live sports on ESPN a long time ago.

MLB Network, NFL Network, NBC Sports, and NBA TV are where it's at.

I'm with you. Except for games, I can't remember when the last time was that I watched the Eastern Seaboard Programming Network. Maybe 10 years ago?

Yeah, I guess I'm a rube. I still liked College GameDay... and I always give ESPN the benefit of the doubt for the fact that getting to see every single lacrosse game during the season while when I was playing not a single one was televised.

College Gameday is great besides the token sob story. I've become so jaded because of the weekly "_____ has cancer, here's his/her story". I just dont care anymore. Maybe i'm a bad person but if I wanted to hear about someone who is sick or dying I'd turn on the news not ESPN.

PTI and Around the Horn are the only non live sports I watch on ESPN and even that is not frequently. Around the Horn has changed their formatting and I don't care for it anymore, Now neither show will grab my attention for the entirety of the program and I end up flipping around during it. Oh and I watch the last 5 minutes of Gameday.

There is no way she lasts long.

The problem is that ESPN tries to milk every single drop out of any shtick that works for them. College GameDay told a few incredibly compelling stories about times when college football transcended being just a game, and helped someone(s) cope with incredibly daunting circumstances. These stories were so incredibly compelling that viewer reaction was probably almost universally positive. So ESPN tried to capitalize on it by telling one every week. The problem with that? Not every story is compelling enough to warrant a segment on a college football show, and the stories started to become "reaches". It is similar to the way the tried to capitalize on the Kornheiser-Wilbon "clashes". PTI was originally great because the two guys disagreed so much, and there was "drama" there. The thing is: Kornheiser and Wilbon were able to come off like two old friends insulting each other "with respect". ESPN has tried to reproduce that dynamic many times since(Sean Salisbury/John Clayton; Mark May/Lou Holtz; Stephen A Smith/Skip Bayless; etc), with abject failure.

They didn't let Curt Schilling speak his mind...

There is a subtle difference there. Kurt crossed over the line drawn by the decision makers from mindless stuff that can be used to entertain the masses, and occupy their minds, to actually hitting a nerve that got some people out of their seats.

Which was way to dangerous.

So they had to find another 'empty-headed' shill drivel for them. ESPN's success is entirely wrapped up in 'water cooler conversation.' Anyone can show a sporting event. Not just anyone can have the masses salivating, pushing buttons with their fingers that result in 'clicks!'

So, all of the research consultants find good numbers with an almost random big-mouth, and, "Voilà!"

Eli Apple's mom's career is born.

I still think PTI and Around the Horn are good. As you said of Wilbon and Kornheiser, it reads like people having a good time and talking about sports. May/Holtz and Smith/Bayless are annoying. They exist to be controversial. I don't like that so I don't watch them. But I watch the ESPN stuff that I do like.

ETA: Then they have stuff like Sports Reporters, OTL, and 30 for 30, which I think are all fantastic.

She has only just begun to squeeze the nectar of her son's career. At some point (most likely when her ESPN spot fizzles) she will have a reality show.

I'm picturing something along the lines of "Date My Mom" where women will have to grovel for her permission to date Eli.

I'm thinking that this is more likely:

Her show name will be "Queen of the Apple". Obvious play on 30 Rock, her name and the city of New York.

She's not wrong in her criticism of the Giants, but I kind of feel bad that Eli Apple is stuck in the middle.

I don't understand how someone with so little talent has a job doing what she does. She's got the writing level of a middle schooler and nothing interesting to say. Her prose is terrible. She seems to leverage her son's talents into "controversy clicks"... that'll get very tired, very fast.

I'd find it rather humorous if Eli's career becomes seriously affected by his mom's antics. I'm sure ESPN loves having brought her on board. she's a walking website hit with the bullshit she releases.

If she keeps it up, it will. Teams don't want to deal with that crap and if you're not All Pro or close, they'll drop you like a hot potato.

This is when the Giants sign Richie Incognito, and simply tell him "you know what to do"
