If Farley starts at Safety for the rest of the year, I would be okay with that. I do hope that Avery at least gets healthy so we have some depth back.

I won't be okay with that unless he is never given man assignment against a WR. His game is not suited to running stride for stride with a WR but if he's asked to provide zone coverage or simply hit, then I'm all for it.

Farley can be an enforcer, he never backs down. I'll continue trusting the coaches no matter what so let's hope our best 11 is always on the field.

Tranquill and Farley are very similar players-- physical, in-the-box Safeties who have struggled in coverage. So I have no doubt that Matthias can admirably fill any role that the staff intended for Drue.

But I doubt BvG intended to start either of them against Clemson or USC. Let's hope Avery is back in time to help defend against Watson's arm.

Not saying this is true but i think i read that Avery will be back for USC.

Completely agree. He hits and plays a good zone but we all saw what happened on Farley Island back in 2013 and it wasn't pretty. But are we giving up on Redfield? I figured they went with the big hitters b/c they were better fit against Ga Tech and to rest his hand, but that Max is the man against passing teams.

Sebastian is back after the bye week

Do you have a source for that? Because that would be really terrible timing. None of the teams we'll face after the bye feature a dangerous passing attack.

Wouldn't this be in his favor. I recall his highlights being in run support and big hits, and few highlights in pass break ups?

Regardless of his particular strengths, our secondary is likely to be most stressed by Clemson and USC. So if Avery returns right after the SC game, the timing will be frustrating. And it's not like he'd have to be a major ball hawk to surpass Farley in coverage.

But with our injury luck, we should probably be grateful he's on track to return this season at all.

i think coach BK said on sunday that Avery was ~6 weeks and he's at ~4 weeks now. Not sure how he counts 4 though. Or maybe he was saying 4 weeks till he's back.

No, you had it right the first time. I read the teleconference transcript today over lunch. Unless I misunderstood, Kelly expects Sebastian will be out approximately two more weeks.

Avery should be ready to go for USC

Avery is worse in coverage than Farley and Tranquill. He is a run stuffing safety, but can't cover worth a lick. I'd rather have Greer Martini covering at safety than what I saw from Sebestian during fall camp.

He's always made plays, one of my favorites from the Kelly era. Seems like yesterday I was listening to him on Mike Frank's podcast while he was still a recruit.

He's the anti-Schmidt. The coaches are always looking for a reason to pull him, but he usually finds his way back onto the field and makes a few big plays.

Farley was Schmidt before Schmidt was.

From this very thread...

Soooooooooooooo.... Can anyone defend him over any of the backups tonight? I'm so tired of his poor tackling.

He's the worst starting player I have ever seen.

I'm not one to bash our players, but he tackles like a coward.
Hopefully he's just depth next season.

Buster. I like you. I really do. But you have stuck to Farely's guns and the 'You don't see what goes on in practice' theory all season. I sure haven't seen what happens in practice, but I have seen how poor he has played in games. There is nothing that he has done during games that someone else couldn't do. He has been blown up on outside blitzes... he has turned away from tackles... he has tried to tackle from his knees. He has given his all for ND, but frankly, it's not enough for me.

Personally, he's still starting because this coaching staff is far too conservative with underclassmen. Do you think Jaylon would be playing if Spond weren't hurt? Beyond that, do you think Spond would be better than Jaylon this year?

This is all to apparent in the RB situation. TF is clearly the best back lining up behind Tommy. Yet for some reason, the keep lining up GAIII out there throughout the first half. It should be Cam 45% TF 45% GAIII 10% for running plays. BK and his staff are far too loyal to the seniors and it's hurting the team. That's my only complaint about this staff.

If he thinks he played well then BK is f'n blind. Just think he's saving face.

Seems so odd that we get so many big plays from a guy that is relatively small, not the most athletic, is a below average tackler, played only a couple years of high school football, and only plays situationally as a senior now.

Every play you have Farley in there it's like you're putting a quarter in the slot machine and pulling the lever.

Not bad for a three star converted soccer player lol. What a great kid! Excellent on special teams, always comes up with a big play or forces a turnover on D, and a great leader of the team as that big C on his chest would suggest. We are lucky to have him!
