Kelly said it all in the post game press conference. Roughly : That is what you get with Farley (Pause - Big Smile) one play he blows his assignment which results in the big play off the jet sweep. And the next thing you know it he is covering a mile of territory and making that interception on the goal line. (Shrugs shoulders; smiles big again; eyes dance the room.) Pause.

Seems so odd that we get so many big plays from a guy that is relatively small, not the most athletic, is a below average tackler, played only a couple years of high school football, and only plays situationally as a senior now.

Every play you have Farley in there it's like you're putting a quarter in the slot machine and pulling the lever.

But isn't life just like that, Beau?

Farley was Schmidt before Schmidt was.

From this very thread...

Yeah, sad to see some of those comments. If he was playing hurt in 2013, you have to give the kid credit. He's taken criticism and played very well for us when we've asked him to step in and play every year. I think he's shown to be a bigger play maker and a brighter spot at safety than Redfield despite not being as highly recruited. While Redfield was playing injured himself at the beginning of the year, he's certainly struggled in previous years to get the mental aspect of the position.

Kinda glad to see positive things happening for Farley. He stuck it out when things weren't going well for him and has played through it well. Seems like he has always tried to be a team player first. Kudos to the young man.

I hate player bumps but man, he's been really good this year in a number of different ways/positions. I'm one of those fans who secretly counts down the days where players like Farley and Schmidt graduate, but Farley has been rock solid and proved me wrong this year. Nd man.

Farley was effective last year as well. He had one bad year in 2013 really, and by all accounts he was playing injured. I think we as fans really need to take a step back sometimes and not be so critical of players, we don't always know the facts. It's one thing if a player has struggled throughout his career, some guys just have a hard time adjusting to the college game. Farley has really had 3 pretty good years and 1 bad year, sad to see all the people that have ragged on him.

Certainly the biggest defensive playmaker last year and it wasn't close. Very good season this year. Farley will definitely be missed next year.

I will miss Farley a lot. He has done nothing but come in and fixed holes. Honestly, may sound weird but I am going to miss him far more than Joe S.

Farley was a warrior. He had three good seasons and one injury stunted season, but he was certainly a net positive performer. I hope he gets a shot at the next level.

Farley is the consummate TEAM player. Never being a poison despite always being the next man in and never the man. If only everyone on the team had his heart (looking at you Max) we would be a much better team.

He will be missed. Made no excuses when he was injured and stepped up when he was needed. Good luck in whatever you do next, Mathias.

The young guys on the team could learn a lot from Farley. Guy never quit, and although he may have lacked in the physically talented department, he didn't lack in effort and being a team player first. I think history will be kind to Farley. I will miss seeing him play. If there is such a thing as a "Notre Dame Man" I would hope Farley gets mentioned quickly in the conversation. He embodied what it means to give your all in the face of adversity. Well done Matthias Farley.

Without a doubt.

Dude went from starter to bench to starter to bench and simply played his role with no I'll will towards his coaches or teammates

Call me crazy but he is the type of guy that can make it in the NFL as a special teams player and a back up in the secondary.

Well said.

As a guy that started early in his career, was benched, and came back onto the field countless times as injuries racked up and players dropped the ball...that is some adversity. He was willing to fill any role we needed him in. Couple that with the fact he was a captain on top of everything, definitely a Notre Dame Man.

He had a bone head special teams play where he ran about 30 yards down field while he was about 10 feet out of bounce. He was called for unsportsmanlike.

I wish we had him for another year. Even as bad as some to the whiners here thought he was.

I was one of the whiners and I happily recant. Farley played very well in his final year and gave us good minutes other than his injured year (his effort is not being questioned, only his effectiveness).

I'd take him back in a heartbeat now.
