Ugh we better get this kid. I can already envision other coaches trying to negative recruit our offensive scheme unfortunately.

I wish I knew why everyone is so confident we land this kid. Is there tangible evidence or are we just going on the fact that he's visited a bunch and he's from IN?

I think it is what you wrote, he is local and has been on campus a handful of times however Steve W. still has his CB on PSU and Tennessee is a real threat as well. My take is its between PSU and ND, with PSU as the favorite due mainly to Steve's opinion.

This is my concern as well. It would be pretty easy to point to Gunner as an example. BTW, I think Gunner is going to blow up this year. When I asked the question earlier in this thread if "we even knew what to do with a pro-style QB?" someone pointed out that Hunter is "mobile enough". Just seems like other schools will be very quick to point this out if they feel ND is a threat or leading in his recruitment.

He's certainly more mobile than Tommy Rees and he was a 3 year starter.

Thanks. This is where I'm at, too. Guess I was hoping there was some reason I was unaware of for some people seeming to think it's in the bag for ND.

We have been talking about this kid for so long, its just easy to envision him at ND. Kid was showing out when we were recruiting Kizer I believe, so coaches have known all about him for a while. I don't think anybody assumes he is Irish, but we are certainly in the race for him.

Come on guys, Tony Pike did fine as did Tommy R for what he was. I like the Dual Threat QB with a plus arm as much as the next but to think CBK can't use his talents is silly.

The real questions I wish someone would ask him is, "Is being able to compete for the starting spot as a true freshman important to you? Would you be able to sit for 3 years to take over the Irish in 2020 if you couldn't beat out a redshirt Brandon Wimbush who stayed 5 years?"

Penn State offers an easier path to the field, that's for sure.

As much as I want ND to win the recruiting battle for him and the bump in recruiting it would no doubt provide, Sean Clifford would sign tomorrow and the Irish are well along in the evaluation process on other '17 QB's like Lindell Stone and Tyler Lytle. Also, the state of Georgia has 4 QB's in the Top 15 next year. One has committed to UGA that leaves three 4 stars that will not be following Hockman in '17 and Eason in '16 to Athens.

With Wimbush most likely around until '19, I like where the Irish are with or without Johnson.... though I like the former a lot better.

4:s: Sean Clifford just committed to Penn State. So either Franklin is targeting two 2017 QBs, or one and going to push out Clifford, or this eliminates one of the two main competitors for Johnson's services.

PSU, Tennessee, and ND are largely thought to be his most likely landing spots.

Hunter was supposed to visit PSU this upcoming weekend too. I assume he canceled or PSU got the feeling he wasn't coming so accepted Clifford's commitment right after.

Now it's just time for Tennessee to bow out of the race.

yes, zembiac sp?

Do you interpret Clifford's commitment to mean that HJ is already leaning a certain direction or just that PSU felt they were no longer a contender? It seems pretty odd that they would bow out of the HJ sweepstakes the weekend after he took a visit.

Or it's time to have Hunter bow out of the UT race. He's only a year behind Jarrett Guantanamo-Bay. At ND he gets a one year cushion between himself and Wimbush.

Oh... and he gets a degree that really means something from coast to coast. The other place gets him a forklift job at Costco.

This. They knew where they stood with HJ and didn't want to let Clifford get interested somewhere else.

“We’re not sure yet,” Johnson said on if that trip would still happen.
“They said it doesn’t change anything about the way they look at me,” Johnson recapped. “They said they still want me. He said they were planning to take two in the class.”

They're are trying to spin it as the plan was to take 2 QB's all along but just never mentioned that before.

I can't speak for Hunter, but if I were a quarterback being recruited nationally I'd be looking at the offrensive line that has been recruited to protect me and the tight ends and wide-receivers that would be my passing targets. I'd also be looking at the head coach's history utilizing the passing game. All these play in Notre Dame's favor. Notre Dame is putting the pieces in place to help make the quarterback look very good.

If I considered myself a future NFL quarterback, I certainly wouldn't fear competition in college. If I can't win the quarterback competition with at least a couple years of eligibility remaining in college, I'm not likely to be a starter in the NFL.

Prior to us taking the lead, Wiltfong's sources told him pretty straight up that it was PSU. When asked if he should change his CB, he was told "No". Obviously not the case now.
