I could be wrong but I thought in the bowl game Golson stayed in the pocket better than any game he had played previously.

Perhaps it was the OLine shuffle, perhaps the OLine did better because they knew the area to protect and he stayed in it.

Golson is the most talented athlete to play the position at Notre Dame in a long time.

Quinn and Clausen haven't been gone all that long, and they were awfully talented.

It seems like they've been gone since Montana left ... the TV commerical one.

Seriously. Clausen and his 28 TDs and 4 INTs would like a word. 68% completion percentage.

Golson is the most talented athlete to play the QB position at Notre Dame in a long time, but not the most talented QB. I think that's fairly accurate.

I would agree. While it was a small sample size, I think Golson did do a better job in the bowl staying in the pocket and going through his reads. In many other games he would have missed his check down guy, and he hit it a few times in that LSU game.

He struck me as much more disciplined. IF that was a developmental step and not a one time aberration he might be a polished QB come Spring Ball. Most QBs make their mark as upperclassmen in their 3rd and/or 4th seasons.

If the maturity light has gone one, he might even become a Call and Haul QB.

Should be interesting.

There was a a gentle ripple.

As a piss-poor typist I "appreciate" typos. I've also developed a personal "spell check" reading many years of posts here and elsewhere. As other's have taken glee/good fun in pointing out, I am far from immune.

My preference is to poke fun at those I feel can "take it." Well... then there are those posts that are nearly incomprehensible. When something gives me a headache and simultaneous belly laugh translating, all bets are off!

With all that drivel/dribble said, before I saw your post I was tempted to make some "one and/or out" wise-ass style comment.

Then there's also respectful deference.

I completely agree and hope that EG stays at ND. I also hope that BK doesn't put the entire game on his QB's shoulders anymore. I honestly believe he did that this year with Golson and it set him up for failure. When BK committed to the run, committed to the short-to-intermediate passes, it greatly benefited the QB. Golson also progressed by finally throwing some check downs, like you mentioned. The combination of all of these will greatly improve the efficiency of an already decent offense.

Hopefully we have a better functioning (and less injured) OL this year which will make things a bit easier too.

Per ESPN's Brett McMurphy 24 schools have inquired about Golson. This was posted on the Irish247 board where Wiltfong said he thinks Golson is the guy for 2015.
Did we ever figure out if this is even legal per the NCAA? Who (BK, Golson, the NCAA) would need to give consent for this contact to take place?

What if it's not Golson doing the contacting?

What if his dad is tracking down athletic department numbers and asking questions?

Is that a dumb question?

It worked for Cam Newton, didn't it?

What is a horseshoe?

What does a horseshoe do?

Do they make horse socks?

Is anybody listening to me?

The way people get around these rules is through the use of intermediaries. So someone will contact Golson's "camp" expressing interest so that if he decides to transfer he'll know they're a potential landing spot... or Golson's "camp" will make calls to places to gauge interest.

It's the same way coaches get around contact rules during certain periods... call an intermediary (i.e. parent or handler), have the intermediary ask the player to place the call, and then you're around the rule.

So in short, all contact rules are basically toothless unless someone is brazen enough to break the few prohibited forms of communication.

I'm assuming that "express[ing] interest" means contacting Notre Dame regarding permission to contact Golson. I summarized the basic rule in post #3333 of this thread. The short version is: until he graduates, schools cannot contact Golson without getting Notre Dame's permission.

I can't speak to the actual enforcement of the NCAA rules on this, but the general recruiting contact rules prohibit contact with relatives and guardians (but not "handlers") and the rule regarding enrolled athletes is actually broad enough to cover relatives, guardians and handlers. I think it would clearly be every bit the same violation regardless of whether they contacted Golson directly or through an intermediary in this case. Proving the contact, of course, is a different matter entirely. And relying on the NCAA to actually enforce the rule as written would be a bit overly hopeful, given their history.

Everett Golson declined to speak to reporters on Friday, citing desire to focus on football and academics. May speak after spring game.
