If Gardner made 10% of the plays he made vs ND last year, vs Ohio State last year, Mich would have won easily. Hell, UConn nearly beat Michigan. ND was his best game, from what I recall. The joke was that while Gardner played great the night he got Tom Harmon's number 98 (vs ND), by game 6, Harmon was calling from the Great Beyond, wanting his jersey back.

Wait are you saying he didn't play well against Ohio State?

32/45
451 passing yards
4 passing TDs
0 INT
10 rushing yards
1 rushing TD

21/33
294 passing yards
4 passing TDs
1 INT
82 rushing yards
1 rushing TD

...which one do you take? Kinda moot, because both are impressive. The first one is probably better (subjective), and that was his performance against Ohio State.

I stand corrected on the Ohio State game. I guess I only remembered what hurt most: the interception he threw on the 4th Q two point conversion that would have won the game.

He did have a pretty bad run in the three or four weeks after the ND game; didn't play nearly like he did against ND. I remember thinking we had gotten his best work.

Just goes to show you how crippled our defense was and how hilariously overrated O$U's was.

Yeah, and as I recall, a couple of weeks later, Mich St put up 400 yds vs Ohio State, too, in the B1G title game. But I guess you could argue that Gardner saves his best for the biggest games.

There honestly is no such thing as "irrational" worrying about this game. You can throw talent, statistics, and everything else out the window. Otherwise we wouldn't have lost 4 of 5. F'em.

I enjoyed watching MSU LITERALLY smash the crap out of scUM last year. Gardner was sacked like every third snap it seemed. They finally took him out not due to a specific injury but just that he was so beaten down.

Here's hoping BVG can pull a Narduzzi.

Lewis Black sorta describes this situation perfectly in a bit he does on his Netflix special.

I like when Keith does these:

And in that corner… The Michigan Wolverines | Inside the Irish

Some things that stood out:

Well, as kind of mentioned above, I’d go up the middle until the Wolverines stop allowing positive yardage.

When I asked Smith if he and Green proved anything Saturday, Smith told me this: “[Derrick and I are] powerful runners. It’s going to take more than one person to bring us down.”

These guys are focused and ready to do damage. The Irish have to find a way to cap them—not to mention Devin Funchess—if they want to ensure victory. I see this one going down the final moments, with Michigan slipping away by less than a touchdown.

the opinion's from ND's upcoming opponent are generally really douchey (as in this instance from the SCUM writer)

It's interesting to me that the scUM blogger makes such a big point about keeping emotions in check and avoiding ejections (both players and coaches?). Regardless of the situation and how badly they want to win this final matchup, I wouldn't think that "ejections" would have been anything I would have even considered.

Am I reading too much into this, or does it seem to anyone else that everyone associated with the "michigan angle" of this game is way too invested emotionally?

I enjoy that BK seems to be treating it like "business as usual," while the michigan side seems prepared to be an absolute trainwreck if things go bad at all.

I'd like to suggest that everyone that posts in this thread until after game time conclude their post with some sort of vulgar comment about Michigan. Failure to do so should result in being neg repped by all. I conclude with, Fůck Michigan

Living in the state of Ohio I have learned that Ann Arbor is certainly a whore (not even a high class one that is hired by politicians and athletes), she is just a dirty filthy whore

Greg Mattison tweaked his role in the defense, coaching linebackers now as he and Mark Smith switch roles. There looks to be a lot of talent returning. After Mattison (or the moment) seemed to overwhelm Everett Golson in 2012, how do you think the Wolverines will attack the Irish offense?

Respecting Golson’s athleticism, I’d imagine that he’ll have a linebacker glued to him for much of the game, anticipating his every move. I’m also going to guess that Notre Dame receivers won’t get a lot of breathing room.

I doubt they spy Golson between the 20s. Maybe I'm wrong, but I doubt Mattison takes a linebacker out of coverage to spy a pass first QB (red zone may be different).

I think the point of emphasis will be to disrupt the timing of the passing game with press coverage, like the article suggests, and keeping Golson in the pocket once the play breaks down.

Amir and Fuller are both small in stature and Robinson has had issues getting off the line. It could really disrupt the timing of the passing game if these guys are pressed and can't get clean releases. On the flip side, a guy like Fuller can really make a defense pay if he gets a clean release. Having DD for this game would be huge (obvious, I know). These pieces of garbage have some talent in their secondary but I'm not sure if they're physical. Anyone watch their game last week that has an opinion on them?

Mattison can get creative with the blitz but it wouldn't surprise me if they come out and play vanilla to gauge the ability of our tackles. If Elmer struggles with Clark one on one, I think they'll blitz Stanley's side to get evenly distributed pressure on both sides. I wouldn't be surprised if Peppers is the one they send. He has the speed to close on Golson from the nickel position. If both tackles struggle and they're confident the ends can keep him contained on their own, I think they come through the A and B gaps.

If they can get consistent pressure, and I'm not convinced they can, we need to run the ball, like Buster and VDP mentioned, mix in some well timed screens and play the RB most inclined to put his helmet into a blitzing defender's knee cap.

Yeah, if they spy Golson, he will have a career day in the air. That, paired with not protecting the middle with run support, would quite possibly be their very worst strategy.
