Notre Dame benches another football player in academic fraud investigation

Updated: Thu 6:57 PM, Aug 28, 2014

A statement released Thursday evening by the University of Notre Dame says a fifth football player is being held out of practice and games, pending an investigation into academic fraud.

NewsCenter 16 independently confirmed the identity of the player, defensive back Eilar Hardy.

This latest announcement comes two weeks after the university said four other players under investigation would be out of games and practices.

...

The following statement was sent from a Notre Dame spokesman (Heisler):

"As Notre Dame's internal investigation relating to potential NCAA violations reaches its conclusion, a decision has been made to hold a fifth football player out from practice and competition. As with all cases of suspected academic dishonesty, the matter will now be subject to the University's honor code process."

This is good news, kind of.

However, we're kind of overlooking the fact that it was found to be an institutional problem.

It's great that the University took action, but it's terrible that it was going on. I take great pride in our guys being 'the smart ones,' and this sounds awful.

If the post is true, vacating wins isn't a ridiculous notion. Considering our stance on academic honesty, it might be necessary.

So now we wait for them to have the "Honor Code Committee" rule on the findings....geez you'd think they'd have some kind of emergency session or something...

Just for a little clarity. Smart kids and prestigious schools cheat all the time.

If you were taking pride in our sids being smarter and working harder than the rest of college football, you still can... That dosn't mean they are all honest, though!

Emergency session if there was a chance they'd be back. Just throwing salt out there to follow the theme of this thread.

Would you stay at work late for said hearing if you were an athletics hating member of the administration? I can totally image a smug smile after rebuking the suggestion and replying with, "it can wait until morning".

I am telling you, only DD and KVR are looking good now. Friends don't know about the other three. Of course, friends don't let friends drive drunk, either!

Emergency sessions are reserved for double-secret probation cases. Only one such case was ever officially confirmed: the famous Neidermeyer case of 1978.

The Honor Committee better have their shit together and hold these hearings tomorrow.

If they wait til Monday... there isn't one, so that means Tuesday, which means best case scenario (which would never happen at ND), the players that will be cleared will be available to practice Wednesday.

Koon finally tracked down Greg Bryant and hid him in his closet handcuffed till Greg gave up the info about the players. Then Koon gave him his t-shirt to wear(size XS)

So does this mean no win vacating?

Individuals go to the committee. I doubt the student committee will be ruling if the university vacates wins or not.

And by claiming institutional problem not athletic, no reason to vacate wins?

An institutional problem doesn't mean your program "lacked control." Stuff is always going to happen.
