Does he have another year left? Pretty certain he played his freshman year.

You can take your redshirt year whenever. You have 5 years to play 4, so Ishaq could redshirt as a senior and be back for a 5th year in theory. Now if ND would allow him to come back for a 5th year as an undergraduate is a different story (or if even with missing a semester he could graduate in the Spring).

If he sat out this season, he'd use his redshirt and still have one more year of eligibility. He has two more seasons (2014 & 2015) to play one.

Is Golson considered a junior or Sophomore? I didn't know if he still had that year of eligibility since he didn't attend the university last year.

Oh okay. I guess I figured a redshirt was something that was granted to you by the university.

This could get really embarrassing if the University seriously fucked up and these players were completely innocent all along.

I seriously doubt that'd happen, but just saying.

Well the University isn't the one who started spreading all these rumors. The only reason they mentioned those four players by name was because their names had already been out there for 5 hours by the time the press conference happened.

Even if those players are cleared, I don't fault Notre Dame at all. They were conducting an internal investigation, but word somehow got out and they were forced to respond to the rumors via a press conference. It's not Notre Dame's fault they were forced to discuss an investigation for which no conclusions had been reached.

That was me. :)

I am a regular on both sites and when one site has something before the other site and I notice it, Ill try to post it on the other site. No harm done.

As a regular on both sites, they are pretty much the same actually. You have the funny people, the eternal optimists, the eternal pessimists, etc. just like this site. IE may have a few more insiders than DD though.

Ahh, I see. Since you're a regular over there, what's the credibility of this guy saying both will be back Monday? If he were on IE, who would he be?

I don't think that a suspension counts as a redshirt year. I'm pretty sure if he is suspended, he loses that year. I may be wrong though, so someone correct me if that's the case.

Even if someone told you you were wrong, would you listen? :).

No. This would be Ishaq's last year of eligibility. It's now or never for him.

But if he doesn't play, then he could play in '15. You can preserve a year any time, and he has only used 3.

Not trying to take away from any excitement or hope but can we wait until a reliable source confirms people will be back before we get to happy. I was told here yesterday wait until a reliable source said things before we worried even though I want this to be true let's apply that logic ton good news as well.

Since when have you ever waited for a reliable source to become worried? If there is even a sniff of bad news your worry-meter goes insane lol. I've never seen someone react to even slightly bad news like you do bro.

Referring to it as a "redshirt year" seems to cause a lot of confusion. The NCAA gives every football player 5 years to play 4 seasons. Ishaq signed in 2011, so he has until 2015 to play 4 seasons. If he's suspended for 2014, he'll have played only 3 seasons (2011-2013) leaving one to spare for 2015. So, at least as far as the NCAA is concerned, he could still play next year. Though I'd imagine ND's administrative hurdles will be significant.

Bad news is accepted at face value. Good news must be verified by an independent commission of experts.

I figured this was all bullshit and we will still go undefeated.

Glad I was right.

If someone could PM me a summary of whatever happened today I would be very grateful. Have been pretty much off the Internet all day as I broke my phone while hiking.

I use to post on DD a lot and Chiro is solid as they come.

So he's the Koon of DD? Got it.

Nothing happened. Anything you hear or anything anyone has to say is complete heresay.

Its funny how people try to convince themselves that some idea they come up with is truth. Its pathetic how some people will run with anything and say its the truth. When all reality they are making the situation 100xs worse.

It would be phenomenal if these people that supposedly knew what was going would just keep it to themselves until Notre Dame says something.

And props to you GKIrish on handling the situation as you did. That is the way to handle information and a tough situation. You did not go around to social media and message boards posting randomness before its fact and you let everything take its course. I wish that 99% of the fanbase had the brain and professionalism that you do.

Also, Swarbrick took a very legalistic approach to actually naming them. They weren't in the press release or in initial statements. He responded to a question about it. Then he answered in a rather roundabout fashion, something like "we met with four players. those four players are suspended pending the investigation. the players we met with were..."
Given his level of savvy, I assume these were all moves designed to protect the university.

He needed to name the players bc of jackass media reporters running with anything and everything. He stuck up for the 4 players and he didnt leave them out to dry. I really cant think of a time that someone named names in the "first" press conference on a matter like this. Normally its after an investigation has wrapped up and they state their findings. Like he even said, Notre Dame has a process of typically not stating names in matters such as this, but due to the shit storm created by so called "insiders", he had to.

If anybody wants to go into full body heaves. Go check out mgoblog's thread on this. The amount of misinformation, assumptions and general mouth-breathing is at an all time high. They literally give zero shits on whether they actually understand the situation. It's the usual shit for over there, but makes me want to vomit either way.

With all due respect to Swarbick, etc.... the issue is that ND is suspended people from practice amid an unfinished investigation. This was always going to leak. You can't remove 4 starters from your team and NOT have it get out.

Step 1 is not witch hunting back years and years.

Step 2 is if you're going to witch hunt, then finish your shit completely before you make any moves.

Step 3 is if you're going to jump the gun, issue a release downplaying the severity of everything or fabricating an excuse until the situation is resolved and don't hold a presser until you have answers to give.

Or you can do the opposite and hold a presser that does nothing but beget more speculation and bullshit... and consider vacating a bunch of wins for no reason.

I seriously question if anyone outside of Swarbick has any clue what they're doing in the ND admin, and sadly Swarbick has very little jurisdiction in this whole matter. This is almost exclusively handled by people outside the athletic department.

@greghoward88 is normally a guy a really like but he went off the deep end yesterday, too. For that matter so did Mandel with his scathing piece. There isn't much you can do. People love scandals and they really love them when "holier than thou" entities are involved. It sucks but what are you gonna do?

Media didnt have access to practice on Friday. Would they have paid attention today? Sure. If a site reported that the 4 werent at practice would have had to stand outside the gate and watch them leave practice. And when there are over 100 bodies coming and going....you are going to miss someone. OR if they were told that info from someone at practice, that would violate every rule in the book as far as this stuff goes. That is all I am saying.

As much as I love that Father Jenkins was the lead on the presser yesterday, all it did was feed the hysteria. That the president of the university was leading the convo made it seem as serious as it could be.

I'm personally content with how ND handled it but they certainly didn't do a damn thing to minimalize its reach.

In short: it was the right move for the university but it was a bad PR move.
